Hurry up and announce it already! I need a new phone!

dont get me wrong, i like leaks... but leaks that give away the entire device take away the mystique a bit for me and are becoming a little bit of a turn-off :/

i am starting to feel *bad* for apple, it used to be damn near impossible to get a few details about unreleased products, let alone photos. Now its becoming quite ridiculous.

It's mainly difficult because of sites like this where people come to get the scoop and because of the technology making it so easy for people to get these pics discreetly. If this is legit, it's still not as bad at the iPhone 4 leak.

It seems like many of the comments criticizing these "leaks" desire the new iPhone to resemble some of the higher end android phones. Why is that? Let's be honest there is only so many ways the candy bar form factor can look. My brothers vision of the perfect phone is one powered by friendship. I don't know exactly what that looks like but I digress. Apple did not invent the mp3 player, but what they do well is user interfaces and the ecosystems they are used in. I will be the very last one to cry doom and gloom, or say that Apple will be the next RIM, but what I know for sure is that the new iPhone will be an evolution in design and function. They could throw in some awesome sauce like a new battery technology or something else I have not thought of. Who knows, 5 years from now we may be waxing poetically about in the old days people held phones in their hands!

Obviously not real photos, the glass is raised from the bezel in one angle and flush with it from the other.

Still not sure why they needed the huge plastic windows then. A very small seem would have probably done the trick. Or some kind of insulation between the band and the back.

Making the band and the back one-piece makes it stronger and easier to assemble.
Almost unibody.
If they went with just a simple seam then people would still be screaming about the seams so they may as well make them obvious. And you'd still have to find a way to join all of those materials. Apple already has the patent for fusing metal and plastic so that seems to be the way they decided to go.
Plus we still don't know what else they may be doing with those plastic inserts.
NFC? Inductive charging?
Whatever the plans, a totally metal back could interfere with them.

People, some of us just love the iPhone 4/4S design. It's a classic, and classics are timeless. That doesn't make us sheep, or under Apple's mind control.

I don't need my phone to provide me with thrills and chills every year or two, or fill some empty space in my soul.

Please stop with the rude name-calling. I'm not a sheep, or blind, or stupid. I'm someone who loves the current design and will be happy to stick with it. If you don't feel the same way, I'm cool with that.

We understand. But not everyone is content with the phone's size. Apple is telling us "you can have any screen size as long as it's 3.5in". I've gotten used to typing on a small screen. I've never liked it, but with newer phones, I can't justify continuing to use a small phone's keyboard.

And I'm not telling you that you have to be content with the phone's size. See my last sentence in your quote. I simply object to having people hurl insults at me because they don't like the same things I like.

I confess that I don't understand the whole "Apple is dictating to us" thing. If the product you want isn't something Apple sells, then clearly you need to buy a different manufacturer's phone. I would never buy a phone I didn't like, especially at these prices.

Whatever the case may be, it just doesn't look right to me. I'm not against 2-tone per se, but this color scheme just doesn't look right to me. I'd prefer a completely black phone personally.

I think it would've been cool if apple were able to use some ceramics instead.

...

I am torn on this design. On one hand I really do think it looks excellent however I think it looks a little too much like the iphone 4/4S I was hoping for a complete redesign like when they went from the 3gs to the 4

Personally I hate the iPhone 4 design but each to their own. I think you do raise an interesting point. Assuming it's correct this is basically the same design for 3 years/versions now. How long would you be happy with the same basic design - 5 years? 10 years? Is that what Mac fans want - the same basic or "classic" design every year. I don't know and when did Apple switch from futuristic new designs to a "classic" design that never changes? I didn't notice but it's certainly happened. The iMac design hasn't changed for years, same with the MBP, etc. I'm not sure that works for me with a phone though. I use it every day, looking at the same design year after year just gets boring for me. I'm sure the die hard Mac fans with keep the faith but I'm not so sure about the rest. I honestly don't think this phone will have the same impact as the original iPhone 4 did.

Yeah I agree with you. The SGS3 looks fugly. Just because it's only a Samsung, nobody cares about the design.
That's right, Samsung is the "hot" company right now. What I find ironic is Apple fans get knocked as fanboys, isheep etc. who will buy anything with a :apple: on it, yet these same people never say this about everyone jerking off to Samsung right now. They're selling the most phones right now so they must have the biggest fanboys/sheep, no?

It's hard to say. I've worn my hair the same way for years, so chances are, as long as I didn't see something I like better, I'd probably be happy for quite a while.

But that's the key for me... If there is something out there you like better, go for it. It's the anger and feeling of betrayal that people are feeling because Apple isn't doing what they want them to do (and the rage at people who don't feel the same way) that I do not understand.

I don't know why everyone is expecting it to be so radically different? I think Apple have now found a compact and good design and they will be sticking with it for a while.

Look at the Laptops. The Macbook pro has been the same since late 2008. Even the new retina macbook is the same, it's just thinner with different screen no disk drive but the design is essentially the same.

This is the same for the new iPhone, while we don't know if this is a true design or not all the rumours over the past months have pointed to a design similar to the iPhone 4 and onwards. I think everyone is just expecting some significant changes as the phone market has been evolving so much in the past decade.

The smartphone market is newer and is evolving faster than the laptop market. iPhone 4 was a breath of fresh air in 2010 but it's old in 2012. The iPhone 3G design was dated by the time the iPhone 4 was released. Apple needs a change.

I didn't understand people that expected radical changes to the 4S considering the 4 had just been released but Apple really needs a game-changer now since there's more than enough people out there are saying "if the 5 isn't good enough, I might get the Galaxy S3."

Why is the headphone jack located at the bottom? Now you would need to put the phone in your pocket upside down.

You don't? I kinda figured that's why its that way. Why would you put your phone in your pocket right side up? You're holding it in your hand and slide it in your pocket. That would be upside down. The speaker in also pointing up in this position. When you reach in your pocket to answer your phone, don't you want it ready to grab naturally and answer? Seems like a no brainer.

The iPhone's screen size was great for its time when it was released. IIRC, Jobs and Jony concluded that the screen's size was optimal.

No kidding that we should buy another manufacturer's phone. We will have to because Apple has become inflexible.

When it's all said and done these things are too expensive and fragile to look like anything but a square piece of black rubber and a piece of glass. I haven't looked at my 4 in over a year. It would be nice if someone actually designed something with some grip and protection so I didn't have to cover it up. Form does not follow function here.

My daughter has had 2 gens of iphones - 3GS and 4. She took the plunge and got an S3, even though she lost everything she had in the iOS ecosystem. By all accounts, she says the S3 is really great. She uses it a lot for photos, social networking, taking notes, etc. She is very happy. The thing she complains about right now is the battery life. It's possible though that this is because she's fiddling with it a lot because it's new.

She's right. The camera and social aspects of it are fairly well done. I also think music videos and such look better on the larger screen. Not just bigger, but better too. But get close, and I can see the pentile. If you can't see it, try turning all the lights off and put the screen at minimum brightness, then just look at the gmail icon.

I think the keyboards available on Android are an absolute joke compared to the stock iOS keyboard. I probably type at barely half the speed on this thing. But Swipe is fun of course.

She's not imagining the battery life problems. The battery life is terrible. Under normal use, I got basically 3 days of use out of my iPhone 4 and I can't get through one with the S3. I generally have to charge it at least 60% during the day. The battery benchmarks put the S3 closer to the iPhone 4, but that isn't my experience at all.

Basically if you decide to jump ship for Android, there's compromises both hardware and software, but in most cases its not like it can't do it. You may have to be willing to shove all your music in Google Play or Amazon Cloud, but there's ways to do that.

I personally don't think its worth it just to read books when a nook glow is like $140. I'm most likely going to move back to the iPhone with the iPhone 5 and an iPad Mini or maybe a Nexus 7 if the mini doesn't happen.

Ugh, I'm really hoping this isn't what Apple launches. I don't like the Android OS but I do like the Galaxy S3 hardware and If I wasn't so embedded in the Apple ecosystem, I would be seriously tempted to jump ship if this is the actual new iPhone design.

I do not like the form factor at all, I don't believe 16x9 works for tablets and phones, it just looks odd to me. And what use is it? A few extra lines on a non mobile website that I still wont be able to read without zooming?

Seems very lazy of Apple, it almost feels like that in order for them to be able to continue talking up their "Retina" claims they make the phone longer and keep the same DPI rather than taking a small drop in DPI and making a proportionally bigger and more functional screen.

I've been a huge fan of the iPhone since the 3G and it feels surreal that I'm considering just upgrading to a 4S or even moving to an Android phone. That's how much I dislike this design.
