People want something new and different. It dosen't really matter what they change, but it has to be different. Hardware can be bought, specs don't make the phone.

Developing new faetures takes time and I think Apple had too little to do something great. They had the advantage with iOS, then the App Store and later the hardware bump to the iPhone 4.

This time they had too little time to innovate on iOS, because even if thez abandon old technology they cannot redesign its core.

This is the main reason why Windows 8 has a real chance.
Microsoft had the time to create something new.

Apple is chasing its own annual release cycle and is counting up version numbers. Apple has a lot of smart people, but innovation simply takes more time than they had.

Don't get me wrong, I do own iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, HTC Legend and Samsung Galaxy S3.

I will buy the next iPhone, but I try to keep my expectations as low as possible.

It's hard to say. I've worn my hair the same way for years, so chances are, as long as I didn't see something I like better, I'd probably be happy for quite a while.

But that's the key for me... If there is something out there you like better, go for it. It's the anger and feeling of betrayal that people are feeling because Apple isn't doing what they want them to do (and the rage at people who don't feel the same way) that I do not understand.

I guess that's the problem with a one size fits all policy. If Apple had 2 or 3 different iPhone designs and sizes I doubt we would have such a heated debate because there would be something for everyone.

I can understand your point of view. In a sense Apple has become middle aged along with many of their customers (me included). That's not intended to be derogatory in any way. But if you look at things it's true - Apple doesn't seem to like change. It's products basically look the same year after year with the odd tweaks. But so do I. I buy the same type of clothes, cut my hair the same way, etc. But you know I miss the radical days. I miss the wacky designs like the coloured iMac, the Mac Cube, iMac Sunflower, etc coz they were different, they were fun and exciting. It made you feel alive to be a Mac user. Now I feel like an accountant with my grey iMac, my grey MBP, my "classic" iPhone. The only product that gets me excited anymore is the iPad which still has that exciting new cutting edge design feel to it.

Got my iPhone 4 the day it come out and I'm gonna stick with it, waited 2 years for this?

Are you serious?!. It's gonna have a much faster processor and graphics, much better camera, bigger screen and more. What more do you want?. If thats not a major upgrade to the 4, then what is?!.

The iPhone's screen size was great for its time when it was released. IIRC, Jobs and Jony concluded that the screen's size was optimal.

No kidding that we should buy another manufacturer's phone. We will have to because Apple has become inflexible.

Except... Apparently they are changing the screen size. Some will be happy, some won't. Such is life.

I don't get the big deal. The 2010 design is iconic, bold & beautiful. It's a 5-year design. There is no need to do anything except continue upgrade the internals and update the screen to Gorilla Glass 2.

I really hope these are fake, if you look at it, it appears the front glass cover would be glued onto the back frame like the iPad? Which means you will not be able to replace the battery like you can with the 4 and 4S, not good IMO. And what happens when the home button fails and you want to replace it?

LOL. Getting older sucks... But it is also strangely freeing. For example, when I say something that has people looking at me like I have four heads, I just tell them I'm in the middle of a hot flash.

How big is your pocket? Oh yeah, all you youts an ya baggy pantaloons!

It's a retina display. You want bigger, hold it closer. But seriously I like the size. Can reach it all with my thumb. But movies are little in letterbox 16:9, so making it taller and 16:9 let's videos be fullscreen without being center cropped.

I'm also guessing that apps that are t modified to use the whole display will have extra space at the end, where the dock will stay visible. That would be a great way to keep the integrity of apps and have a useful function all in one.

Is it that difficult to press the home or lock button to see?

You have obviously never taken advantage of this feature. During meetings, movies, flights and most of all @ night, this is really handy at seeing whether or not you should blind yourself with the screen..

Would love this feature too :apple:

That's what I was thinking also, but why put that in between the camera and the flash?

Maybe they wanted to keep the top bezel pristine and it doesn't make sense to place it at the bottom next to the speaker/other microphone. Then, I guess in between the camera and flash might make sense as its sufficiently far away from the speaker and they are already drilling 2 holes in that area, a third's not going to make it any worse from the "perfection" perspective?

On my droid that I used to use, the noise-cancelling mic was on the back. As to what made Apple put it in that particular place on what we're seeing here, I'm not sure. Then again, if it were anywhere else on the back, that'd mean it'd be under the aluminum. And drilling a hole randomly in the middle of that wouldn't look very nice would it?

I'm disappointed, they would've made it different from the iPhone 4. When I switched from 4 to 4s i felt I didn't get a new phone, tho everything was better inside, Im more of a touch kind of guy, I like to see and touch something new to my hand that would mark the times I live. And I don't think I would see myself getting this new iPhone and I might have to move on and go to galaxy note 2 if it comes out. I just feel they made it the same size because they want people to get the iPad if we wanted more of screen and portability in computing. They would've put their resources in making iOS work with 4.5" or 5" screens that we could still type using one hand.

You my friend, are a true fan-person. The type of customer apple loves.

Personally I can't stomach the thought of this being the next release, and I will pan it. Apple have really lost it. is Jony Ives still at apple? Maybe it was Steve Jobs' creativity after all. What is going on??

I have all kinda android and windows phone. So no I'm not a fanboy, but I like iOS the best because it is so easy for me to keep in touch (imessage, facetime) with family members and friends.

Since 98% of them have an apple product! ;)

I pretty much have a new something every 10 minutes at least. I don't think it would be that useful.

Another dull design...great.

Seriously, the iPhone design is very much a boring design. It just doesn't seem as if they are even trying anymore.
Then don't buy it, simple.

For those of you saying it looks like a stretched 4s are you looking at a different phone than I am? The only part that remotely looks like a 4s is the sides, other than that it's COMPLETELY different. Unibody back, smaller dock, speaker/mic "grills", back, front, headphone jack all completely different.

From this pictured device even the sides are different with the bezeled edges. The amount of crying about a phone I see on this sight is amazing, I can only hope the majority of it is done by the younger crowed that hasn't really had real life issues to contend with. Not hating on you for it, rather glad the iPhone 5 is the worst thing you have to contend with in your life.

I think given the leaks now it looks like we have the IPhone 5. We seen this with the IPhone 4 and it turned out to be genuine.

The slight changes fits in with the old cycle the 3GS was similar to the 3G but with a new back.

I reckon this is an early prototype and the final model will look more polished. A larger screen, slight redesign, new dock, NFC will all be big updates with IOS6.

Contrary to popular belief, you don't need gigantic pants to store a bigger phone. I'm not a giant standing at only 5"8. Maybe if you're the dwarf from Game of Thrones you'll have reasons to complain.

Yeah, let me tap to zoom continuously...

It's not a great leap forward in design, so it better pack a punch in other ways to compete with the S3 for example.....

Frankly I don't care very much, as long as it has a decent battery life and no issues I'll get one, just easier then going over to a nexus or android.

More evidence of Apple's decline. Hilarious how all the pieces point toward this.

Maybe they'll pull their act together before it's too late. Bad sales would definitely help them get their head out of "the cloud." :apple:

"a hot flash". I hope that was a typo LMAO.

I know what you mean and you're right. I do miss the colour iMac though. It was like having a blonde secretary with big knockers. It might not have been technically the best but boy was it nice to look at. LOL

This just can't be. Internals, larger screen, thinner, and new functionality aside, the design of the 4 & 4S has looked increasingly tired. Why then another generation of the iPhone that for the most part looks like the previous two? Apple needs (no, requires) a new iPhone designed to go after Samsung in every which way. And killer design is one of these which ways. Here's hoping Apple has a surprise in store.

iPhone, IPhone 3G, IPhone 3GS almost looked the same yet the 3GS was most popular.
