I also believe that many of these initial reviews of the Xr when it was announced cast such doubt on the display. So many on this very forum chastised Apple and posted repeatedly that it's old tech and going to look like crap. I believe that many just decided to go for the XS Max and now see that the Xr display is way, way better than any of these naysayers predicted.

But I agree with the previous poster... doesn't really matter which phone you got.. if you are happy with your purchase, you don't need to justify it. Use it and be happy and be happy for whatever everyone else picked for themselves!

Y’all, if you own a XS or a XS Max and are thinking about a XR, buy one and lock yourself in a dark room for ten minutes. After you turn all phones True Tone off and brightness all the way up you’ll see an insane difference between AMOLED and LCD. Whether that’s worth an extra $250-350 is the question but much easier to see at that point.

It's easier to see the difference in terms of true blacks but most people don't have the screen brightness maxed in a dark environment in normal use. If you use auto brightness the screen dims in low light so make the screen more comfortable to look at and save power, in bright sunshine the brightness will be high to compensate so you can still see the screen.

Premium cars will get you from A to B just as good as any economy car. But they can costs 10s of thousands more. Does the premium car owner say they got ripped off? Some people just enjoy having a premium product. Some people may have a specific need for the XS / Max’s slight performance benefits. So really there’s not much else to say. I like my Max and don’t feel like I was ripped off.

So an XS Max equates to owning a 911 GT2RS, an SL 500, or a Kia Stinger GT2? Just curious how high the vanity can go? :apple:

I’m sorry but that’s a logical fallacy by false dichotomy. It’s very obvious I was making a generalization to convey a point. Seeing it received over 30 likes I assume many members of the community argree or recognize that fact.

800p resolution LCD is just bad for a 6.1 inch screen.

It is going to be pixelated and fuzzy. Plus lousy viewing angle will make it worse.

Even the 8+ is already pixelated when you tilt the screen at an angle. You can see the pixel lines

It is going to be...meaning you haven’t actually seen one in person? Seems like a lot of people are making judgements about this display without having seen it or used it.

Exactly. Looking at specs and not the actual device! Some of these comments are actually pretty funny and tells you what they are all about versus reality. This was exactly the point of my last post in this thread (Many jump to conclusion based on the specs only).

I have seen plenty of 8+ which my niece is using. That screen has a higher ppi than XR. And it still looks pixelated and fuzzy (to me). I have been using over 500ppi OLED screen for a long time. And it is a significant difference in sharpness. Of course for the Iphone crowd it may be acceptable but most of the world has moved on to minimum 1080p LCD resolution. Fact is XR screen is still a lousy and cheapo screen for a phone that cost $800. Even $200 android phone got 1080p LCD.

I have a MAX now, and I went to the store today to check out the XR.

1) The XR seems like it does 98% of what the XS/Max both do, for much less. The vast majority of iPhone users would love that phone

2) The white, red, blue and yellow look great in person

3) The XS and Max feel and look “nicer” than the XR, but I’m not seeing the utility. For example, the XR screen is fine, and the camera feels excellent. All apps will work equally well on all of these phones

4) Apple really should have released a single next generation iPhone with XR dimensions and specs and an OLED screen starting at around $899 at 128G. This would have been “the new iPhone” and created a huge upgrade cycle. Instead we have this dual track system where none of the buyers actually get real value.
The 10R IS great value!

Then stop smoking something before looking at the screen. Lol

Why did they downgrade the resolution to < 1080p? Because of this I had to go XS instead of XR

No you didn't have too, you made the choice to do so! I've used the Xr for 3 days now and I never noticed any issues on YouTube or anywhere else with the quality of the video. It will downsize 1080p video and they look mighty good to my old eyes.

doboy... my gosh it's 2018, I can't use technology from the iPhone 4 and besides that all the competition has 1080p OLED screens.. Apple just sucks! LOL
.

Well, the specifications of our eyes haven’t changed a lot since 2010, have they?

Homo sapiens is 100,000 years old only. It would take quite a while in evolutionary terms for our retinas to have any meaningful change and be able to discern more pixels at a given range.

Why do you absolutely need a 1080p screen?
Same question as why do people watch bluray instead of VCD or why people game on 4K instead of 720p or why people take business class instead of economy class. To each their own and everyone has their own reasons. In my case I can discern the differences. And a downgrade for me is not acceptable since my iPhone 7 can already support 1080p.

Why put a 720p screen in XR? Because 720p is good enough. Why put a A12 chip? It is a bloody waste. An A8 is more than good enough. :)

The reviews and user experience say otherwise. Your point about the 8+ screen is a complete lie too but you already knew that.

It’s not 720p.
