Just got my iPhone 3G this weekend. Had been on iPhone v1 for 1 year. My current usage:

Usage 7 hours, 32 Minutes
Standby 9 hours, 6 Minutes
No Talk Time

I did a full charge before going to bed last night.

When I got up this AM the numbers above were even closer (almost the same) then they are now. Of course I was not physically using my phone while asleep. I have had this problem with the v1 phone but I would just power reset the phone assuming something was running in the background. I did the same this morning and my standby is getting higher then my usage since then.

Do others have this problem and do you know what is running? I think we need a application that shows usage by application.

I got the 3G for the 3G support. However, on the Network Enable 3G it says that it may decrease battery life. Is that because the 3G signal is weaker then the EDGE Signal? If I don't have a strong 3G signal I don't see much improved speed over EDGE. Hopefully that will improve.

When I am at home or at work I am connected to WiFi. Assuming a weak 3G connection uses more batter life (having to search for 3g) it would be nice if the 3G would be diabled while connected to WiFi. I hate to have to turn off 3G manually everytime I am on WiFi.

Does being on WiFi reduce the battery requirement of 3G when the phone is just setting on the desk?

DON'T trust the battery meter to determine whether your phone is fully charged or not. Just as it's inaccurate on the amount remaining, it's also off on the amount of charge when charging. Leave your phone plugged in longer even if the battery indicator indicates "full." I've found a good rule of thumb is at least 3+ hours of uninterrupted charging, overnight is ideal. Debunk if you want, but I am getting consistently good battery times with this method.
My latest:

I don't know if I more impressed by the 2days standby or the 8hrs of usage. That's pretty cool.

Leave it plugged in until it says "charging complete."
With all battery-powered devices today, if they are more than 50% charged and you unplug them, they will display as fully charged initially. Check back in 30min and you will see a more accurate reading. The only way to know if it truly is fully charged is to leave it plugged in until it says "charging complete."

AHDuke99, your phone looks perfectly fine. 2hrs usage, 14hrs standby and the battery is only 50% depleted. That is Normal.

- From what I've gathered from this thread, the first few times you charge your phone when you first buy it will significantly affect the quality of your battery for the rest of the time that you own it. When you first buy a new iPhone, it is VERY important to charge it all the way up, drain it all the way down, then charge it all the way up, several times. This will ensure that your battery works well in the future.

Talking on it for 40 minutes and losing half the battery while on EDGE is perfectly fine? If so, I am really considering taking it back then. My old iPhone could get 4 hours + of usage when just talking and have over a day of standby. By the time I plugged this in, it was at about 25% and had 1.5 hours of usage and 16 hours of standby.

Why are people then getting 6 hours of usage and a day + of standby? Did they just get lucky and get a great battery?

7 to 8 Hours of usage here.... Mixed use: music, apps, wifi, location services, etc... Brightness up to 3x%

is this ok?

Ok, here's mine again w/ 3G, bluetooth and push off, as well as email set to 30 minute downloads. A lot better than with everything on.
I actually got it to 1 day, 16 hours until the phone shut off but I didn't take the screenshot.

ATT should def let you take 3G off your plan since Apple recommends shutting it off to prolong your battery life.

This is my third day with the phone and the battery hasn't been conditioned yet by fully draining it and fully recharging it. I'm doing that right now actually.

  • Wi-Fi 80% usage, EDGE 20% usage, 3G off.
  • 1 or 2 GPS use on Google Maps.
  • Brightness at 30%, Auto-Brightness on.
  • Location Services on.
  • Push off, Fetch at 30 minutes intervals.
  • Bluetooth off

My usage consists almost entirely of browsing the Internet on Safari, the App Store and YouTube, and some email.

I have no games installed and barely use the iPod.

I was expecting a little big better battery life from Wi-Fi only but I guess that's just my brand new battery and I guess these results are adequate.

Screenshot is a little bit before or after the 10% warning. I don't remember. :|

Comments, please?

I have no idea.....it seems to have transferd from my original iphone 2g......and I got my new phone yesterday that I exchanged and it put the same 36 days on this one as well????

You much have synced the back up of your old iPhone to your new one then.
I, however, think that such information shouldn't be transfered over as it produces some misunderstandings.

Here's my data. About to die. This will be my third full cycle charge...

Kinda looks bad huh? Anyone have any thoughts? This is the 3rd time I've run the battery completely down. I've been using USB on comp to charge, everything on.

Mine

Here is mine. WiFi on at home. Bluetooth, Location services and 3G off. Brightness at about 25% with AutoBrightness On. Most use is SMS, Safari, and Push Mail. I do use the iPod while driving but not constantly. I'd say the battery life is OK but certainly not great. Any suggestions?

I've no idea why this thread exists. Completely and utterly pointless. Are you on EDGE, are you on 3G? Are you playing a game? Are you on WiFi? Are you listening to music? Watching a movie? Any time spent doing ANY of those things = minute count in usage. I can get 20 hours listening to music. Does that mean my battery lasts 20 hours?

Good grief people. There's likely nothing wrong with most of your batteries.

Everyone already knows that it varies based on type of usage. Most people on this thread have typed what type of usage they had. The whole point of the thread is so that people can look at all of the images as a whole and get a general idea of what type of battery life range is normal. This way, when someone complains that their battery needs to be replaced, they can look here first and see what everyone else's battery is like. :)

Turn off Push Email. That's supposed to be a pretty big battery drain.

Pretty impressive huh???

Ok....I think when I charged it for some reason it didn't reset the STANDBY TIME. I believe my actual time is now 1 day and 8 hrs since last full charge. I used EDGE, 3G and some Bluetooth. Downloaded quite a bit of data and been on the phone about 25x.

Still not bad. I definitely see a huge difference bt EDGE use and 3G battery use.

Here is mine, I have WiFi on all day, 3G on all day, Push mail turned on for Exchange and MobileMe all day, Location Services on all day...basically I left everything on except Bluetooth. I took it off charge at 8:20am and you can see the time right after I got the 20% left warning. If I turn off the location services that should help a ton, plus I had screen brightness set a just under 50% with auto brightness on. This thing is a ton better than the Sprint HTC Touch I had before.

EVERYTHING ON (as Stated). Mostly Internet usage and lightweight App checking (Ebay, Weather, a few calls, texts, and a little music sprinkled in). My wifes usage is insane...no idea what's up with her phone but 14 hrs of usage and a full charge STILL means it probably didn't reset the counter.

Side note: I charged in like under 2 hours fully...

I once went 2 days with the battery showing 100%......then it just switched off :)

I finally ran my battery all the way down now, so that I can charge it all the way. So ... how long is it going to take to charge from empty to full? And will it say "fully charged" when it is full ?

Thank you. :)

Usage

Here is my 1st gen iPhone battery life/usage...is this pretty typical? My usage is pretty consistent from day to day, however it seems like my battery life is slowly getting worse.

Topper82,
Yes, that is typical. I've been watching this entire thread.
Average is ~4hours usage and ~12-15hours total ("standby").

Then why are a lot of people here getting 6-7 hours of usage and 24 hours + of standby? RIght now I could never get that, even on a day when I barely use the phone.

Battery life depends heavily on the kind of usage.
Yesterday, I was able to get a lot more usage hours than today, but I did not take the screenshot.

For example, if you only use the iPod, it will last a while, and that counts as a usage. Yesterday, I used iPod almost all day, and did a little talk (maybe 25 mins of talk time) and little map/gps + some browsing.
I was able to get like 8.5 hours usage + 18 hours standby.

The screenshot is for today's usage.
Mostly safari/youtube. I only get 5.2 hours of usage and 13.2 hrs of standby.

Settings for both days are the same:
3G on
Loc serv on
Wifi on
Brightness around 40%
Push on
Fetch off

I finally ran my battery all the way down now, so that I can charge it all the way. So ... how long is it going to take to charge from empty to full? And will it say "fully charged" when it is full ?

Thank you. :)

Average around 2.5 to 3 hours (but you should leave it plugged in for a while even after it says fully charged)

And yes, it will show a plug icon instead of a power/spark icon inside the battery on the top right corner.
