If Apple could market the 11 at $499 as recently as last month, why couldn’t they just update it with a 5G-capable SoC and call it the new SE at $429? It at least comes with an ultra-wide camera, which is standard for phones at that price range these days.

Releasing an XR with updated internals, while skimping out on the improved water resistance, ultra-wide cam, and 12 MP front camera of the 11 just screams profiteering to me. And yet, that’s exactly what Apple will probably do. Here’s hoping it at least has an ultra wideband chip and night mode like the 11 does.

No, no, no, no, no.
always has been as simple as can be.

Old, outdated design with all main components at least one generation behind. Put in the latest SoC and a few conservative upgrades to the internals. Voila. $429!

Cannot be a new mini with OLED because then it competes with mid tier iPhone.

Cannot be mini with LCD because then Apple has to spend r&d for a new device.

It’s Xr with whatever is going to be the latest SoC when it drops.

SE formula has never changed and never will.
Just like the iPads, thats what I suspect they want to do:

iPhone SE 3 - 299
iPhone SE 4 - 429
iPhone 15 6.1 - 799
iPhone 15 Plus - 899
iPhone 15 Pro - 999
iPhone 15 Pro Max - 1099

Basically, covering every price point. If Apple can't get you at the high end or middle, there is something for you at the bottom. On top of that, if you do a trade in, that iPhone SE 3 could actually drop down to 199 making it the cheapest iPhone to date.

I doubt it - Apple tries their hardest to keep the existing production lines going, and the XR is not being manufactured anymore.

It seems more likely it will take over the 12 line, possibly having a SE Mini.

I have been saying that the next SE would be in the old Mini chassis to clearly segment it from the mainline iPhones by screen size. For the non-techie who's looking at a new phones, Apple surely has to try to upsell them to one of the mainline phones. With a 5.4" SE and 6.1" mainline/pro, it should be clear to that non-techie - you want the bigger screen size, pay more money. With a 6.1" SE and 6.1" mainline/pro it becomes confusing - why should they spend a lot more money for the mainline/pro model? The SE has the latest chip and the same screen size; the non-techie isn't going to look into (or even care about) colour gamut, screen brightness, camera generation etc and Apple could potentially lose a lot of mainline/pro sales to people like this that just see the same screen size and chip as the mainline iPhone but at a much lower price.

Having said all that, looking at the clusterf*** that Apple have created with the new iPad lineup between the 10th gen and Air it would no longer surprise me if they used the XR case...

No way are they going to use a more "premium" design for an SE. I bet a rehashed LCD XR with newer internals is exactly what's coming.
I don't feel like the mini is a premium design now that Dynamic Island is the premium experience and everything else is the older notch design.

For me, the XR was the best iPhone design ever. I still prefer it much more than the brick design.

In the past, I loved the 3 and the 6-7 much more than the 4-5 design.

Was really hoping the SE line would keep smaller phones alive...I'd have downgraded to the smaller device and kept my mini size if possible. Maybe thats exactly why they aren't making it smaller.

I guess one of the most boring jobs must be designer for apple.
Every 5 years you are allowed to change the screen size by 1“ and going from round to flat edges.
Every 2 years a new color:)

I feel like using the mini design would live up to the original intention of the SE (small and cheap). Unless apple seriously upgrades the regular iPhone line up with faster refresh, telephoto etc, then why would anyone choose a regular 14 or 15 over this iPhone SE 4 which will presumably be considerably cheaper. Ultra wide maybe?

iPhone mini design with newest chip plus only one camera (more room internally for the battery) for $450 would be an instant buy for me

2 years from now, Apple will release the next iPhone SE in the iPhone 13 mini form factor and people will get the small phone they wanted. Guaranteed.

Do you have real sources or this just idle speculation, if you don't respond we shall take it as a sign you have real sources.

I’d thought they would have used the iPhone 13 mini case. 5.4”

Better fit in my opinion vs having yet another 6.1” screen in the line-up
I figured the SE would copy the Mini iPhone designs.
The mini wouldn't really make sense because Apple doesn't have an LCD display that size (and they are certainly not going to be sticking an OLED in the SE line anytime soon - that would threaten sales of the flagship models).

iPhone XR/11 (which share the same dimensions) were the last models with LCDs so I suspect that Apple will be sticking with that design for this generation and likely the 5th gen as well.
