1. The White iPhone was announced. Could have easily waited to compare the two if you were on the fence.

2. A gift is still in its box and Apple can sell it as new. A month old phone can not be sold as new.

The gift can be given to a recipient, used for a week and the recipient sells their 3GS, then realizes the white is something they wanted all along and return it. Purely Hypothetical but not far fetched.

When Apple says you can "try it out for 30 days", and yes, they DO say those exact words in the store, that means try it out and return for any reason you want.

I still think the better route (if you can) is to add a line to your account, pay the ETF, and have both in front of you if your on the fence. That way you profit and still put the unwanted phone in the hands of someone who wants it.

It's not about Apple, or about their bottom line. Frankly, that doesn't concern me. I'm not gonna walk into their stores and steal product off their shelves, but I'm not worried about their financial situation.

I'm actually talking about consideration for other people. Individuals. Do I care that products are made in sweatshops? Sure. Do I buy only products that weren't produced in sweatshops? Whenever I can.

Being inconsiderate toward others... it's stuff you learn in kindergarten. It's cool to be considerate.

Is renting an iPhone with the express purchase of returning it later cool? Nope.

It's just not. You can polish a turd all day, but in the end, it's just a shiny turd.
WHAT, please, please is wrong with "renting" it or changing - why, why not. The facility is there for all - if there was no white, ever, they would keep black. But they return it for a white. If Mr Jobs had produced zillions, no one would even think about it. However, many, including me, never got a black one - no stock. I certainly would not curse the "swapper" for simply being there before me! I'd never expect someone who was in fron of the queue to deny themselves of a phone, whether they return it or not is just the way commerce is. It is in now way inconsiderate to take it back. I ask again - why is it ok to go and sell the black one on Ebay, then buy a white one. Should everyone never swap things at all? Please clarify the diference, thanks.
Apple only care about money (fine) - but this is why we are all in a lather!!
Oh, and of course - being pipped at the post! Early bird gets the worm.

very large signs indicating that they would be for sale at a later date.

Apple store employees repeated several times at launch black for white trades would not be allowed. Apple also issued a press release before launch. The White iPhone is also pictured next to the black iphone at apple.com saying:

White iPhone currently unavailable for order or in-store pickup

Everyone knew about it, some chose not to wait.

The bottom line is INTENT. Maybe you're not getting that. I don't think anyone is arguing against the idea of swapping out if you HONESTLY bought the black iPhone with the INTENT on keeping it.

What is being discussed here are those that bought the black iPhone with the INTENT to send it right back as soon as they could get a white one.

No other scenario is of concern. And if you don't understand the difference and implications of INTENT - then there's really no point in furthering the conversation with you, specifically.

Flawed logic.

Selling your black and buying a white is completely legitimate.

Returning your black and exchanging for white essentially forces Apple to provide you 2 iPhones for the price of one.

2 phones? No no, one goes back. Like in Ebay, when you sell it instead, and you buy a white one.

Why is it not legitimate? Apple seem to think it is. And the law does. No one is stealing anything, Apple have the phone, if they are ok with us taking stuff back. Its not about flipping morals/ethics or the like. There is absolutely no difference taking it back because you change your mind - you may use the credit to buy any other product - is that still 2 for 1?

I guess there are many punters here still wet behind the ears and have much to understand in life. I am a groany old crone, I know.
But I am right.......

This.

Nuff said.

Nope. Again, flawed logic.

You return a used phone. Apple can no longer sell it as new. Not hard to understand.

So the whole 30 day window to sell it back because the hardware doesn't work doesn't constitute for anything? I mean surely Apple is going to do something with all the phones that are used and that have been returned within the 30 day window.

Fix'em, use them as refurbs.

Trading black for white isn't the same as returning a phone you no longer want.

If you want a new phone because of the antenna issue, swap it at an apple store under the applecare warranty. You'll get the same color/size phone back.

These people want to use the return policy to swap colors.

Who said they would resell it as new? Or resell at all? Not me. Return a used phone - they can do whatever they want. You should read posts thoroughly prior to quoting incorrectly. It's just not wrong - intent or not what is the problem with someone ahead of the game and manipulating the situation to their advantage. There are no broken bones now, you (and me) will all have one eventually and we will be the benefactors of patience!!

Logic - yes - no flaws - never said it would be resold at all actually. It may be, but not as new. Someone will then be getting a cheaper phone, used, but guaranteed still. These poor souls who cant afford a new one or just don't mind, will score. All happy. Except the Macmoaners....
Night night - you need a sleep. Thanks for your comments too. Makes us all think, if nothing else. Really. Even me.

Sorry - what's wrong with "intent" - is intending to swap immoral. Groan. If that's the worst we do in life, it's good going.

If that's the worse we do, yeah... I agree.

Somehow, I doubt it. If a person is willing to mow right over others just to get at a phone, what will they do when the "prize" is something more essential that's in high demand?

Makes ya think.

Patience? Who is this WE you speak of? Would you be the one showing patience by rushing out to get a phone you never intended to keep and then exchanging it the very day you could? How is that patient? Please define patience to me...

See - you don't get it. That's unfortunate for you...

Ok, i'll swap my black one that doesn't work correctly for a new white one that does because you said I could!

can't waut for everybody to run into Apple trying to exchange there Black for White. This should be fun to watch. we will just see what happens I am waiting to order so I am not worried. I can still order Black or White!

It'll probably even out, as Apple ran out of "refurb" iphones for people. They'll probably happily take the black ones, sell the new white ones, and exchange the black ones for people who are unhappy. Of course they'll still end up with a lot of used iphones but meh they messed up.

I'm not returning it for white but I'm am beyond frustrated with the proximity sensor in my phone. If a software update doesn't fix it and I need to take this in for another phone, if I like the white... I may take it. The sensor thing is maddening so I would not feel guilty taking a white. I'd just hope it wouldn't have the same problem.

That would really but a wrench in peoples plans if Apple makes note of all customer accounts who returned a black iphone for whatever reason, and only allows that account the option of purchasing a black phone.....hahahahahahahaha!

I will give my honest opinion on this matter and then I will be done. I don't feel that 99% of the people that post really have room to talk. Hence my jokes. To be honest I find the people that are trying to have morals hilarious. I posted an analogy in that thread about drivers. I always find it amusing watching a car doing 90 down the highway cutting people off with their shiny Jesus fish on the car bumper. You know darn well if they have that on their car MOST of the time they are the real preachy type. Imposing their views and beliefs on others all the while being hypocrites themselves. Did you notice in that thread the name calling? Most of the people calling others names were the so called "higher character" people. IMO if you are going to resort to name calling over the internet to someone that you haven't met face to face is JUST as bad.

Someone created a thread about thugs on this board. Which I replied to and the thread was locked. LOL! I commend the OP's service. Thank you! I myself am a former Marine. 0311 hard charger! Does that give me the right to name call and butt into others affairs and preach to them about this or that? Nope nor would I. I really don't care what people do. They are not breaking the LAW (referring to the black to white issue only).

So I wonder for all of you "high road" people. Do you ever speed down the highway, have any free music that you DL'd off the interwebs? Take your pick! Most of the stuff you have actually done is probably breaking a REAL law. Do you put your shopping carts away after you put your groceries away? There are so many things I see people do on a daily basis and I guarantee you that at one point you have done something. Does that make it right? Nope! I'm no innocent. However, IMO if you are guilty of pretty much anything then you really don't have the right to preach your morals anywhere or to anyone else unless you are perfect.

I refuse to give my opinion on the black to white "swap" issue. At the end of the day it really doesn't matter to me. I have no right to preach to someone that I don't know and better yet actually verbally assault their intelligence or name call over the internet. I do have my opinion on the matter. I won't say what I think. I will just say they would be foolish not to sell their black iPhones to someone else, make a profit, and just flat out buy a white one. It's what I would do. However, who cares what I would do at the end of the day? LOL! My black one is just fine for me.

I guess my point is on these internet forums it's easy to act like your **** don't stink. However, if you look in the mirror you have to know that you haven't always been a saint. That's all I'm saying.

So if it is not for you to judge, why is it that you preach to others that they shouldn't judge.

I'm not going to debate you. I shouldn't have even replied to your first post. I've said what I wanted. If you disagree then so be it. :)
