Guys I'm gonna exchange my black iPhone to the white one and you guys can't do anything about it MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA >:)

am I the only person that actually called an Apple store? YOU WILL NOT BE EXCHANGING A BLACK iPHONE FOR A WHITE ONE...UNLESS YOU ARE EXCHANGING THEM THE SAME DAY AS YOUR INITIAL PURCHASE...IS THIS CLEAR?

Well, its thats the case (above poster) then I'll just return my iPhone, get my money back, allow AT&T to revert my previous upgrade eligibility then go purchase the white one. :)

OR

Sell my black iPhone 4 on eBay and make around $700. Used that money to buy the white iPhone 4 outright for $599.

Two options. :)

Is this so hard to understand? We are RETURNING the phone the day the 30 day return policy ends (or earlier), then we wait a couple days while the white model comes out and go buy that one for the same price we bought our black iPhone 4... is this clear?

I think it's pretty clear Apple isn't going to allow exchanges. Why did you even bother calling?

I'm wondering... is it possible that AT&T will have a large enough influx of people trying to do this very thing that it will take longer than expected and/or they'll flub up the eligibility for many people?

AT&T aren't known for precision recordkeeping.

Just sayin.

I find option 2 to be the less questionable (from an ethical standpoint). Unless you plan to list that phone on eBay as new, never used.

;)

No, I'm going to list is as used for two weeks. No need to lie about it. Someone will buy it. I'll be happy if I get $550 for it.

you won't be doing that either...because the white won't be availiable until your 30 days has lapsed....you don't think Apple suspects people are gonna try this?

wow ur posts look as if i wrote them lol, im doing exaclty the same

So what if it isn't available after the 30 days? After I return my black iPhone 4 within 30 days, I go to an AT&T store and get a new SIM card to activate my old BlackBerry for the few days I wait for the white model, which can only be a maximum of a week from when I return my phone on the 24th.

You'll prolly get more than that, so long as it's in otherwise mint condition. :)

I'm going to be returning my iPhone on the 30th day. I think I will then by 1 or 2 cases of douche so I can feel and smell fresh for the remainder of the year. TAKE THAT INTERWEBS! :D

And if the white iPhone isn't available until October - will you gripe? Will you curse Apple? Will you "rent" another black iPhone?

So now we're playing the "what if..." game? I think you need to get over the fact that some people are going through with this plan.

I stood in line for 7 hours to get my black iPhone 4. Did I know that I would be returning it so I could get the white model when it comes out? No. Do I now think I might have made a mistake and could be more satisfied with a white iPhone? Yes. Get over it.

This topic has brought the worst out in people on both sides of the discussion.

People parading their rights around, then others wishing distress or faulty products on those who decide to swap. It's quite sad.

It is reasonable to think that since the white model has been in the workshop longer (so to speak), some of the issues of rapid distribution (undried adhesive) would be relieved. Aside from that, why is it some are next to crucifying individuals for simply changing their mind? When has an indecisive mind become a moral damnation? What if the black phone was given to someone as a gift and the recipient would prefer a white?

There is a lot to be said for acting like an adult. However the majority of posts that have urged such behavior have done so in a rather juvenile way.

As I said before, if I decide I must have a shot at the white phone, I will add a line to get the subsidy, pay the ETF, and sell the phone I decide I like less.

Im no gavel of reason though. Carry on.

Dont return it to apple, sell it on eBay for a profit and wait patiently for the White iPhone 4.

I sold my launch day unlocked iPhone 4 32GB on eBay within hours for 750GBP ($1,136)

After seeing the pictures of the white in another thread, and having the reception issues, im happy to wait for a month or so

The "goody two shoes" folks of Iphone 4 Macrumours !

Er... actually, it is EXACTLY like buying clothes then returning them later.

Only, in your scenario, the store was advertising the tux in black and in white. You wanted white (summer wedding and all), but come opening day, all they had was black.

Soo... you bought black. You wore it all over town. You then found out that white was coming available later. Nevermind that the big event has passed (launch for the ip4/wedding for the tux example).... you demand to have what you went to buy in the first place and are irate that you HAD to buy something you didn't want.

In truth, when you found out they didn't have white, you could just as easily have made do with another option (borrow a white tux from your friend/use an old GSM phone for another month).... you chose to purchase a brand new (popular) item just for the sake of having it on launch day.

I won't go blaming the lack of a white iPhone on Apple until they announce that they're scrapping the whole thing for this year and they won't even sell a white version.

Puh-leeze.

Spin it however you like. You just leased a phone for a month. That's all you've done.

I didn't want a black one. I wanted white. So, I waited.

I don't mind waiting to purchase the phone I wanted to purchase.

What's a month? It's just a phone. I've got my 3GS to keep me company, all loaded up with iOS4.

:)

Soooo hilarious.... is swapping black for white via Apple any worse than, say, initially buying a black Iphone from Apple - then, when white Iphone appears, hopefully within a month, selling the black one on Ebay or similar. Zillions buy refurbed/second hand" from Ebay etc.
So, to make it easy - this is the deal - I buy a black Iphone 4 at beginning at launch or thereby from Mr Jobs of Apple cause he has noooooo white (sic) - drat!
OK?
I use it for a few weeks
Then, when the white object of desire arrives I go and purchase it. And sell the black, anywhere - possibly making a profit! No one would think that's "morally wrong"...... I hope!

Or. The heinous alternative - just swap at the Apple store - Mr Jobs wants punters, so he makes it easy, keeps them happy and allows them to change or return.
Now, who know what happens to all returns - are they refurbished or "binned" - its possible. Does it matter? Apple will still be in the black if they BINNED them! I wonder what proportion are returned to Apple. And the customer is happy and content.
So whats "morally wrong, unethical, discourteous etc etc"?
Lying, stealing, hurting, famine, genocide and cheating are unethical and all of the above descriptions. Stop indulging yourselves in a stagnant pool of judgemental, not enough to do individuals and start thanking goodness one company is making a swap/return easy for all....... Lighten up and quit bellyaching about A PHONE return. Even Tesco take things back within a time period. It's called "making loads of money".

And ...... how flipping many of you Macmoaners worry about the blood sweat and tears which flow during the manufacture process - in mines and factories. People are being exploited and have horrendous lives. Some of moan about "

Iphone return morals"! You are better than that, surely?
Fun?

I've not seen anyone here suggest that someone who really wanted black, but now thinks that white might be better (looks, reception, whatever) would be unethical if they returned black for white. Ditto the issue of getting black for a gift when you really would've preferred white.

The only people I have to admit I take issue with are those who, for whatever reason, decided to buy a black one on launch day with the INTENTION of treating it like a rental car until they could take it back for the phone they really wanted (white).

That's just messed up. I can't put a positive spin on it.

If you bought a black and figured you might like it, but you still don't and plan to sell on eBay and buy a white, well, that's perfectly reasonable.

But, buying a black one on launch day to some how "stick it to Apple" is inconsiderate. Not to Apple, no... they're a company. It's inconsiderate to the people who really tried in earnest to secure a black phone on launch day, but are still waiting for shipment.

I've never advertised myself as a paragon of virtue and morals. I am, however, generally considerate of my fellow man/woman.

That's it.

It's not about Apple, or about their bottom line. Frankly, that doesn't concern me. I'm not gonna walk into their stores and steal product off their shelves, but I'm not worried about their financial situation.

I'm actually talking about consideration for other people. Individuals. Do I care that products are made in sweatshops? Sure. Do I buy only products that weren't produced in sweatshops? Whenever I can.

Being inconsiderate toward others... it's stuff you learn in kindergarten. It's cool to be considerate.

Is renting an iPhone with the express purchase of returning it later cool? Nope.

It's just not. You can polish a turd all day, but in the end, it's just a shiny turd.

Flawed logic.

Selling your black and buying a white is completely legitimate.

Returning your black and exchanging for white essentially forces Apple to provide you 2 iPhones for the price of one.

Thats fair.

It's too bad that Apple didn't have enough white models ready on launch day to have a few in store on launch day, not for sale, but to give the consumer an idea of what it would be in person. I know it's an idealistic attitude, but Apple really shouldn't have said it would have been available on launch at the keynote.

The way it was removed in an almost phantom fashion drove people nuts. Clearly.

1. The White iPhone was announced. Could have easily waited to compare the two if you were on the fence.

2. A gift is still in its box and Apple can sell it as new. A month old phone can not be sold as new.

Agreed. They should've had demo models of the white, and very large signs indicating that they would be for sale at a later date.

That way, the people who really wanted white could make a more informed choice about black vs. white.

Right now, I think I want white. But... I may well hold it in my hand and think it looks like crap and go buy a black one. ;)

Yep. That's what I am doing. Waiting to see which one I'd like better.

Of course, I also didn't sell my 3GS. I always wait until I have my new phone.

In fact, my husband suggested I go ahead and sell my 3GS to subsidize a new phone on launch day. I told him NOPE. That's not how I do it. This is my 4th iPhone. I've had the other models when they came out (or very close to launch). I can wait. :)
