As a photographer and videographer I am waiting for Apple to get to the Sony level of smartphone photography/videography.

From the footage in the Peter Mckinnon video, the 14 Pro is still way off. Admittedly it was test footage and admittedly it was through the native app with few manual controls, but the underlying features are just clearly not anywhere near to Sony's phones.

For reference the Xperia 1 IV:

The Xperia Pro-I

Truly unbelievable footage from a smartphone. Apple has a lot to catch up on.

Do you have any comparisons from well-known/objective sources? The highest ranked Sony phone I could find on DxOmark is ranked joint 72nd for camera quality, although it's from the previous model (Xperia 1III) which came out about 18 months ago.

Smartphone are size limited.

There is only so much practicality and bulk that they can sacrifice for 10-20% extra performance to usurp dedicated cameras for video recording.

However, a recent iphone is brilliant at recording without the user having to worry about white balance, contrast, autofocus, image stabilisation and other functions.

****...Seems like I just paid $2000CAD+ for the Dynamic Island going from 13PM to 14PM.

If you chose to but $1,549 CAD retail for a 128GB iPhone 14 Pro Max doesn't seem bad when you consider that an 11 Pro Max with half the storage (64GB) and none of the improvements of the 12, 13 or 14 models was $1,519 CAD retail.

Additionally, your 13 PM is worth $955 CAD via Apple trade (perhaps more elsewhere) which would bring down the cost of the 14 PM.

I just look at video on youtube and assess myself.

I've never seen iPhone footage look as good as the Sony Xperia line. Even iPhone 13 Pro Max footage shot in 10bit with Filmic Pro looks nowhere near as good as in those examples I gave.

Ok, nothing wrong with trusting your own eyes I suppose. Just wondered if there were any other sources apart from three videos from the same cockney bloke who is, likely, doing some sort of promotion for the Xperia line.

Dynamic island aside I don't think ppl will notice the upgrade.
For some people, it's not even about noticing a sizeable upgrade. For me, I budget about $500/yr to upgrade and trade in my previous gen model because I like having the newest iPhone. With this strategy, I'm ok with the fact that the year over year upgrades aren't going to be crazy.

With that said, 3 features on this year's model definitely appear that they'll be a nice upgrade:

- Dynamic Island
- AOD
- 48MP Camera.

There are plenty of other example of the Sony Xperia line. Just search Youtube and make an assessment yourself. I'm quite sure you will agree that the Xperia is superior for video, but all tastes differ!

Yes, the Sony Xperia line are all smartphones and as such are all limited by size.

Here you go https://www.tomsguide.com/reviews/iphone-14-pro

unlike the rest of the reviews they actually did tests. i swear most of the reviews on the phone is vague and personal which doesn’t offer much to go off of. We needs stats and confirmation of apples claims. Toms guide discovered 2000 nits doesn’t get hit and they found battery life subpar.

gizmodo, tech radar and basically 80 percent of reviewers were sucking up to apple big time
So 80 percent of reviewers are “sucking up to apple” but….the consensus is that the phone is meh…..that math is not mathing 😂

But for real anyone that ordered should know what they’re getting into, its a upgrade over already good phones…but still a upgrade. My iPhone 12 Pro Max is a great phone, I could continue using this for at least two more years, but now ill get to enjoy the slight upgrades the 13 came with and the new additions of the 14p.

My Android friends has always said Apple is all about marketing. I always brushed it off. After the iPhone event and the reviews today .. I am starting to believe them. The 14 Pro is barely any different in the camera department compared to the 13 Pro but Apple's marketing threw out numbers like 2x, 3x better or the biggest leap for the iPhone. From now on, I will not watch Apple events anymore, lol.
To be almost the most valuable company in the world, they must have a lot of people fooled by their marketing.:apple: Don't think Apple cares if you watch the Apple events, provided you buy the products.

That’s a great point. I agree 100%. I have a 12 PM and looked at it the same way.

They also mentioned ios 16 might have been messing with their review, they will check back after updates and apple addresses the problems

Apple execs go on stage and claim the iPhone 14 Pro cameras are the biggest leap for the iPhone and each camera lens is 2x, 3x better. These claims make it seem like the 14 Pro is a big upgrade from the 13 Pro, which the reviewers disproved today. Maybe FTC need to investigate Apple for false and misleading marketing, lol.

All reviews positive to me but lets all be honest do we really need it if we are coming from a phone in the last 3-4 years?

I'm 40 and I use my 12 pro max to do the following

as a phone
email
social media
safari
calculator
taking photos and video

I would say my use case is probably the average for most peeps? The photos and video are great on my phone and certainly not worth dropping over grand for minor updates. I came from the 2nd generation SE to the 12 pro max and even then it was nice for a day and then the novelty wore off and it seemed to do the job just as well as the SE but with a better screen.

So in summary, lets be honest folks! We don't need it and we should probably just save our money!

Has Xperia fixed the boot loop/screen failure yet?

My company provided Z3, and multiple customers z1/2/3 all had to be sent away for boot looping and/or display failure that bricked the phone. It put me off Xperia phones for personal use, Sony didn’t seem too concerned about fixing it at the time. It was similar to the long-standing LG boot loop issue.

Lol all the reviews have been good
Seems like it should’ve been called the iPhone 13S pro….instead of iPhone 14 pro.

reviewers are saying for the most part with one or two scenarios the camera differences between 13 pro and 14 pro are almost indistinguishable.

i mean honestly it’s the same review year after year for the most part.

but for me I am disappointed about the battery life. I read one review ran a test where the 13 pro beat the 14 pro by 2 hours.

The screen also apparently never hit 2000 nits in one reviewers test…

So it’s looking one minor upgrade and a lot of downgrades…
