I think the chip differentiation also helps to balance the capacities for different node processes, especially now that the M chips also rely on the same processes?

So Apple selling the new iPhone at the old price is a price increase?

I love how you figured out a way to complain about the the new iPhone not being more expensive than the old one.
iPhone 14 rumours suggest it will be keeping the same processor the iPhone 13 currently has the A15 Bionic.

So prices should be cheaper considering the A15 Bionic will be older tech once the A16 is announced in the iPhone 14 Pro range.

Apple will make out its amazing for not raising prices but actually they will be giving you an inferior phone compared to what you should be getting for the same price.

The regular iPhone should cost $649. That's what it cost every year for years until that greedy MBA suit beancounter Tim Cook decided to raise prices to please his beloved shareholders.
And if the price doesn’t suit you, dont buy an iPhone.
Raising prices is all he has done. He’s a useless douche.
You’re missing a big part of the picture if that is all you believe. However useless he is, he is here to stay and it’s up to you to decide if you want to buy an iPhone.

Keep in mind the base 13 is not actually $799, it's $829 unless you purchase with a carrier activation (which in turn requires an activation fee which is typically $30+).

I also suspect we'll see Apple drop the iPhone 13 entirely and leave the iPhone 12 at its current price as the "value" option in the lineup.
This is ridiculous in itself. They drop the 13 but keep the 12 at the lower price. It’s the 13 which should be at those price points.

They do it every year but it’s just more ways they are screwing the customers.

The iPhone 14 is 799 cheaper since you won’t be upgrading.

Probably not that low since it has current tech but in the $499 range. The SE should be at $299 and maybe that's where we should focus the blame since it sells for $429.
Current tech as in the same A15 SoC as the iPhone SE. Even CNET and The Verge agree that the SE is overpriced. I still bought one for my mom because she is use to that form factor coming a 6s. But the fact that Google and Samsung are releasing flagships in the 499 price range, this economic climate, a lot of people are gonna think with their wallet. Those who might have been considering switching from Android, are just gonna stick with it.

But I believe Apple is gonna make the current Mini form factor the new SE starting next year. It will still have the same A15 SoC will keep the cost down.

The iPhone 13 and 13 mini are essentially the same phone except for size. The mini screen size is about 88% that of the 13. Based on that, the 128GB mini price should've been around $730 which is darn close to the actual $729 price. $399 would've been way too low to justify its existence.
Apple can justify it, they just choose not to. But, I suspect they will have to drop prices eventually if a recession hits. Its gonna be iPhone XR all over again. With whats going on, people are gonna be holding on to what they have until things return to normal.

The word “flagship” is being used pretty loosely here. There’s no way I would consider a product with 2 superior products a “flagship”.

The new iPhone is basically old iPhone… And that old iPhone should be $100 dollar cheaper when the new iPhone release.

So Apple release iPhone 14 that is basically iPhone 13, selling at iPhone 13’s old price. Cancel the iPhone 13, continues sell iPhone 12 as low end model with same current price, instead get $100 dollar price drop. Wow… what genius marketing. And somehow people people are feeling they get great deal! Apple didn’t increase the price when everything is more expensive, how generous Apple is!
Aren’t you worried about breaking Apple’s NDA with all these iPhone “facts”?

I honestly think their products are still a good investment as long as you take care of them. I'm really frugal and always buy their cheapest products. Their resale value keeps me pretty well updated.

Agree. Apple providing OS and security updates longer, sometimes much longer, than other smartphone brands helps with resale. Purchase price is the important factor but people should also take into account resale value, at least if they plan to sell/trade by 2-3 years.

Not to mention the mini's components (and hence their costs) do not shrink. Also, the mini's screen has higher PPI with thinner bezels.

Exactly. $399 would've been too low and would've cannibalized a lot of sales from higher priced, higher profit models.

What do you mean "justify" it? The last time Apple sold an iPhone with a similar size screen to the mini was the 8 Plus and that was $799 for 64GB at launch. How would Apple justify selling a 13 mini with 128GB storage for half that price? $399 would've been too low to make the phone worthwhile and would’ve cannibalized a lot of sales from higher priced, higher profit models. Even the older tech, smaller screen 64GB SE is priced at $429.

I'm definitely most curious to see when they drop the SE or offer a better budget phone.

I can't see them doing it with the iPhone 13 mini unfortunately.

Hell, just look at the 12 mini pricing today - it's only $50 below the 13 mini @ 256gb and nearly 2 years old!

Maybe a compromise would be something mini sized, slower cpu, and not as fancy of a camera, but then I guess you are quickly approaching what the SE is. To me the SE's biggest flaw is the horrible camera by modern standards. CPU can go out of date a bit IMO.

Kind of odd to me that Apple decided to sacrifice camera quality for speed in the SE, when in reality cpus are so fast now that it would be better to start shifting the balance the other way. (Android is a good example of this - their mid-tier and budget phones use slower cpus but better features).

Ironically, if the 13 Mini continues to be included in the lineup, as a reduced price "last years" phone, it may sell better than it does currently. For one, it doesn't appear that the regular 14 will be a significant upgrade over the 13, so the feature set will be similar to the regular 14's, plus the 13 Mini could be priced $50-$100 less than currently. That might attract some buyers due to the lower price, and may be slotted better in the iphone lineup.

Do people really notice the difference between a new iPhone if they get the new version year after year? I’ve not owned one before but the differences must be minimal surely ?
