Samsung and Google Delay Android Handset Launch in Wake of Steve Jobs' Death

This seems to be an excuse to postpone, with the hopes that when they do announce, the announcement isn't buried under tributes to Steve Jobs and iPhone 4S reviews. Saying it's a "tribute" to Jobs is offensive. It's a smart business move with a lousy excuse. They want as much attention as possible for their new flagship product, but falsely claiming it's a tribute is wrong.

Are you really joking? I'm certainly not Catholic (and don't even like the religion), but the death and election of a new Pope is nothing short of spectacular. As for Diana, you've obviously not been to the crash site before. And I think everyone was downright shocked by Michael passing. Sure, he's a weirdo, but he was a phenomenal musician and his music pretty much served as a soundtrack to many people's childhoods.

Each to their own I guess, I was far more affected by the deaths of Freddie Mercury, John Bonham, Bon Scott, Janis Joplin, Ronnie Van Zant and Randy Rhoads but that is because I love/loved their music and their losses had a big impact on me, Jackson's songs did nothing for me, likewise Steve's death has affected me far more than the pope or Diana as my house is littered with Apple products.

Nope not at all, I have not seen such universal affection for someone in decades at the time of his death bar a few rabid forum trolls, everyone from presidents to royalty to people in the street to newspapers to tv channels to colleagues and rivals have united in grief

What trailer park did you come out of? You must be out of your mind thinking recent deaths have no bearing on the world. Michael Jackson? Poor kids in Africa knew about Michael Jackson because you know why? His music could be played on **** radio's that were made back in the 1930's. You think those same kids could listen to Michael Jackson's or Amy Winehouse's music on a shiny new iPhone or MacBook Pro. You must be not be old enough to remember the days when Michael Jackson had crowds lined up to see him and just cry. I don't recall people giving the same reaction to Steve Jobs (God rest his soul).

Someone who touched the world is Stevie Wonder... even he said at Michael Jackson's funeral "this is a day I wished I wouldn't be alive to see"

So on behalf of people who were touched by the recent deaths other than Steve Jobs... go eff yourself.

This is like, when Magic Johnson retired from the NBA due to HIV, and Larry Bird (his arch rival) just did not feel like playing anymore, and he retired from the NBA as well, that year.:(

If Apple doesn't care enough about Steve passing away to cancel their new product launch, why whould their competitors?

Seriously? You don't think that maybe they went ahead with the product launch because that's what Steve wanted them to do, and that if it wasn't that way, they wouldn't have put themselves through that experience when they didn't need to?

If either of these companies had any class, they never would have ripped off the iPhone in the first place.

These two piece of crap companies stole apple's inventions and are profiting from them.

If they want any respect, they should have resolved that, before Steve died.

I will never do any business with Google or Samsung ever again.

And I consider anyone who does, to be a less than honorable person. (Which is not surprising given the level of dishonesty you see from android fans.)

I've edited my post above.

Truly, everyone is coming out of the woodwork dropping Steve's name like they were childhood buddies. Believe me, he won't even be in/on the news come a week.

It will be page two next week and you overlook the fact that they will have ongoing production of the product so that availability when they do announce their new product supplies available for immediate purchase will be better.

It's just the best thing to do any way you look at it.

I wasn't shocked by Jacko's death one bit tbh, the guy looked skin and bone for years, think he weighed something like 6.5st, plus the negative publicity about the guy like dangling babies out of hotel rooms and making his kids wear masks in public even aside from the allegations about him turned me against him to the point I really didn't give a damn when he passed away

Steve's death is probably the single biggest death since Elvis in terms of the way people are affected right over the globe, when the pope died no one cared outside of catholics, when Diana died no one cared outside of royalists, when Jackson died most people thought one less weirdo in the world but I have not seen such a global outpouring of grief and universal love for anyone since Elvis died and it might even top that, the world is grieving over Steve Jobs right now and Google and Samsung just know Steve is going to dominate the headlines so it is just PR and nothing more, god silicon valley is a small world Google execs probably heard on the grapevine weeks ago that Steve was on his last legs.

WHAT????

Diana and Michael's deaths were grieved globally and the media made sure they captured every bit of it. I remember being at work at Walt Disney World, back in 97, when Diana's death was announced, and seeing all those tourists weeping frantically over the news. I thought it was the most bizarre scene ever. It wasn't just the royalists who gave a crap about her. Same goes for Michael Jackson - we've all seen how the world reacted to that, who you kidding?

Wow, a lot of moronic fanboys here can't get through their heads that maybe they in fact did it in respect to S. Jobs. Some of you immature morons think competitors hate each other like fanboys hate each other. Matter of fact, competitors don't hate each other like you 12 year old idiots do, they compete.

It doesn't matter which phone is better, it was a classy move by Samsung and Google that deserves a thumbs up. Why are some of you idiots think Samsung and Google are evil? Grow up.

I am willing to bet a million bucks that if they did proceed with the originally planned launch, there would be people calling them greedy corporate pigs with no emotion.

Just take it at the face value and don't read into it too much.

Yeah, I'm sure Tim and co were just totally blindsided by Steve's death?

Having been around a couple family members who died of pancreatic cancer...yes, they probably were. It's a disease that can kill quickly, but the actual death comes up as a bit of a surprise, because you're doing OK (not OK like able to run a marathon, but OK that you're awake and alert and whatnot) one day and dead the next. It would not surprise me at all if Steve was watching the keynote from his home without the slightest sign that he'd be dead the next day.

Yeah I guess you're right because you apparently are an accurate representation of the free world.

This is business, period.

If Samsung/Google delayed the launch of their product because of Steve's death, it's my opinion that this was much less sentimental as they wanted to make sure they had everybody's full attention and the launch got full press and not lost in other headlines.

A strategic move.

The cynicism in this thread is really sad. Why is it so hard to acknowledge that Brin, Page and Rubin are paying respect by postponing the conference? It may as well be that Tuesday will be SJ's funeral, and they will most likely attend it.

So, to show respect...

Samsung delays their phone.
Apple does not delay their phone.

Does make a weird kind of sense.

I am sure that Steve Jobs didn't want Apple to delay the release of the new iPhone because of him.
I am also sure that Steve Jobs didn't expect anyone else to delay the release of their new phone because of him.

As a result, I don't think that "respect for Steve Jobs" is the reason for any delay.

Yes, the same people who are currently accusing Google and Samsung of delaying the launch so they can copy the iPhone 4S.

Google and Samsung couldn't win no matter what they did.

I am talking in terms of universal like and respect, Jackson polarised people thanks to his bizarre behaviour, Diana polarised people thanks to her behaviour, sure both had a massive fanbase but both had a lot of people that hated them, Steve is the one person I can think of that has united everyone, Apple fanboys around the world look at him as a god and even windows and android fanboys respected his genius, plus Diana and Jacko had very unsavoury private lives and were attention whores, Steve was a loving family man and father who shuneed publicity and personal attention.

Sure more people grieved for Diana and Jacko but neither of them had the global love and affection that Steve has/had so Steve was not a polarising person.

It's disappointing to see that people actually believe this respect bs.

Sure it's OK if the funeral really clashes with the event and some top Googlers close to SJ wished to go - no matter what people think they aren't really at war, it's all a bit of company and media circus to create drama among fanbois.

If on the other hand the two are far apart, well then this is actually quite a offensive excuse.

Very curious to see which is which.

I don't buy it. There's so much buzz around Apple right now with the 4S and Steve Jobs' passing that Samsung & Google didn't want their big new products to get lost in the noise (and they would have).

What's even nicer is that Apple maintained their launch schedule of the iPhone. I've got to believe that's what Steve would have wanted!

Are you kidding? Steve would have come back and haunted Tim Cook's azz if he delayed the launch.

You just really need to stop. Steve Jobs did have a global recognition, but a global recognition to those who could afford to enjoy his work. Musicians and philanthropists touch those in ways that don't even require money.
