I understand why this site disparages the Samsung ad; but the reality is that it is clearly, carefully targeted advertising. It's aimed at people who currently own iPhone 6's, who are primed for a new phone. There's not much value in targeting iPhone 8 owners to switch right now.

I totally agree, but I think the execution is poor. The iOS interface, iPhone, and Apple store get way more screen time than the Samsung products do. They make a good case for upgrading, but not why someone should pick a Samsung.

Well then. I hope Apple continues to optimise and support older devices so this ad isn’t true!

Anything that highlights Apple's bad business practices is a good thing, a bit of embarrassment should push Apple to do better.

Like...

1. Having replacement batteries in stock

2. Informing users they are intentionally slowing down iPhones

3. Maybe designing phones so that the battery is more easily replaceable. I know Steve hated lines and parts connecting together, but landfills full of perfectly good phones with dead batteries is worse than upsetting the ideology of a dead guy

4. Not trying to profits from intentionally slowing phones down, either through upgrades or expensive battery replacements

Now I know Apple came clean, reduced the cost of the battery, but the advert is still truthful. If you have an iPhone 6 and don't want a repeat of the nonsense that Apple put a lot of their customers through, then maybe get a different phone.

If you find that the different phone also has the same bad designs practices, maybe look elsewhere.

Also im hoping the MacBook Pro keyboard issue gets really dirty for Apple. £700 to replace a keyboard because they glued half the internal components to the top case. That would be an expensive recall for Apple.

iPhone 6 series was a lemon that should've never been dumped on the public. Video only covers some of the faults such as cheapening out on 1GB DRAM that causes lag and frequent app reloads along with intentional performance throttling to force people to upgrade. What the video doesn't cover are defects like cheapening out on low quality bendable aluminum that led to LCD touch disease defect, etc. If you're an unlucky iPhone 6 series owner you shouldn't be rewarding Apple with another purchase. Apple should do a recall and either refund or upgrade you to a defect free model which would hopefully mean the iPhone XI without the notch.

I dissagree I had the iPhone 6 Plus and it was a great device no issues with mine and I had it until I got the 7 Plus also a great device and now I’m on the iPhone X which is easily the best iPhone so far.

What Samsung fail to show in their advertising is how their devices slow down over time, how the app quality is bad compared to that of the iPhone App Store. They should focus on quality rather than trying to throw shade at another company who is easily beating them.

All of your points about how inaccurate this ad is are valid. I agree. Yet, consumers perceptions re what they are working with. And the Android users perceptions are supported, and the frustrated older iPhone users perceptions are inviting them to switch. The real problem that a switch will create is the ecosystem. No iCloud on Samsung devices, means that a lot of what iPhone users don't even know they use or depend upon will not work. But because they are not aware of it, their NEW Samsung phone will seem like a miracle. Apple needs to do a better job with advertising iCloud, making things more clear on how iPhone and iCloud and macOS all work so well together.

The notch is functional. It offers that little bit more screen real estate that is always good. It’s clear that it works considering other companies such as Huawei and OnePlus adopting the design instead of wasting space. A smaller notch would be ideal but it definitely beats black bars. The Samsung ads will be embarrassing when they release the S10 with the notch

Keep on mind there are lots more Underwood things going on in iOS a the time, things like dynamic encryption and decryption. Your processor is frozen in time. Eventually it doesn’t have the horsepower to do things quickly as in days of olde. Also if your battery is tired, the throttling to prevent crashing will add to this situation.

I'm reading an email on the phone. Nothing has happened on the phone for a few minutes. I exit and open the phone App. It takes 10 SECONDS TO OPEN THE PHONE APP!. This has nothing to do with background encryption, background processes, battery throttling (I checked - it is not), or lack of horsepower - the processor is easily capable of this. It is terrible and bloated decisions at the OS level. It is terrible management of the 6's limited RAM. Having programmed iOS I see it all the time.

The CURRENT OS could be easily optimized for my iPhone to have the same speed for basic functionality as when I first purchased it. I not looking to run full screen games at 60 FPS, or do some fancy augmented reality. I just want to make a phone call - on my phone. Check emails and texts. Occasionally look at map or listen to a Podcast. I want to switch between these apps fairly quickly. The processor in the iPhone 6 is OVERKILL for these tasks. For crying out loud - my first generation iPhone always, instantly opened the phone App - never the slightest pause. Why would Apple even consider push a new OS update to my phone that would make it operate so horribly bad. They should have just excluded iPhone 6s from these latest updates.

But poor decisions are made - or strategically made - to force an upgrade when none is required. There are NO features of the current iPhone models that I desire. iPhone 6 does everything I want it to - and it previously did them very quickly. Now the device is randomly very slow and very frustrating to use.

Alright! Now where's Samsung's ad showing the S5 vs the iPhone 6? Oh... wait.. what? They didn't wanna show that did they. LOL. Because yes, people are still using iPhone 6 happily. Anyone still using an S5 happily? Not unless you want a laggy mess.

This ad makes fun of Samsung, and Samsung didn't even realize it. Well done LOL.

If Apple hadn't reused a nearly identical design for four years this ad wouldn't be possible, but the iPhone 8 is nearly indistinguishable from an iPhone 6 from the front. Granted, performance is Apple's main advantage over Android as its Chipsets are at least a year ahead of the competition. I guess Samsung is using the strategy of attacking their competitors strengths instead of highlighting their weaknesses.

Hahahahaha I cannot believe they made this. What an overly technical explanation for a commercial "You can turn off the performance management feature but it may lead to unexpected shutdowns", the average consumer is going to have no idea what the hell they're talking about - or how about just pay $29 to replace the battery on your 4 year old phone.

The notch haircut dude is pretty legit though, I appreciate the subtle stabs rather than just coming right out and saying it in plain english.

I wish Apple would do an ad with Note 7's falling from the sky and exploding peoples' houses.

Stupid ad.

as I said before, you don't make yourself taller blah blah blah...

the S9 is a great device. there's no need to constantly reference the competition when you're an industry leader in itself. this is just... kinda pathetic.

iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6 are not the same, generalizations in the other hand are.

Credit Samsung for capitalizing on Apple's "laziness" in keeping the same iPhone 6 form factor for 4 years running...

Had TC decided to refresh the iPhone 8 as we had all expected (but didn't happen), this particular Samsung ad would have been very different in its execution, if at all possible.

I think this is appropriate. A lot of people I know still have iPhone 6.
And they're getting long in the tooth.
The 'default' is for them to upgrade to an 8 or a X. Samsung is showing them an alternative.
People upgrade in cycles. You don't appeal to iPhone 8 users if you want to sell them a phone.... you appeal to iPhone 6 users.

Samsung could have made the same commercial but with a person getting frustrated at their glacially slow Galaxy s7. Mine is frustrating as hell.

Three of my family members have Samsung S7 line (S7, s7 edge) and are now sworn off them for their next phones due to the frustrations of Samsung bloat and bugs. It's Pixel, iPhone, or nothing. And of those two, only iPhone has wireless charging, which is my favorite feature.

The OnePlus 6 does seem decent, though. The price is nice. But no Verizon hurts.

Except they specially call out iPhone 6 in the ad, making that aspect of it pretty much not something that's there.

Well, iPhone 6, 6S, 7 and 8 are pretty much the same stale design with large ugly bezels. And, Apple customers that are accustomed to the physical home button, symmetrical display, touch ID and audio jack aren't going to accept the iPhone X without physical home button, missing chunk of display, no touch ID and audio dongle. That's like Ford switching the steering wheel to the other side and removing AC, roll up windows, etc. and expect customers to just accept it.
