Not sure where that comes up in th ad.
As I had proceeded to state, "...Had TC decided to refresh the iPhone 8 as we had all expected (but didn't happen), this particular Samsung ad would have been very different in its execution, if at all possible." Hence, Apple unwillingly invited this particular ad attack.

Stupid ad.

as I said before, you don't make yourself taller blah blah blah...

the S9 is a great device. there's no need to constantly reference the competition when you're an industry leader in itself. this is just... kinda pathetic.

Most consumers look at ads for the comedy factor rather than to influence their purchasing decision. Samsung gets an A- for the lols while Apple gets a D- with those idiotic "what's a computer" and annoying genius type ads.

This commercial is a marketing nightmare. Poorly done and makes no sense, unless Samsung is trying to target individuals who still have the IPhone 6 or older. Even then the message is still the same. Buy or upgrade to a "NEW" phone. Unless someone is already prone to leave Apple this will just entice an Apple user to go to the Apple store and buy the IPhone 7 or higher.

I don't think Apple Legal should get involved at all. If anything, this commercial will just drive sales higher for Apple LOL.

Let’s not forget that even a throttled iPhone 6 running iOS 11.3 is still faster than Samsung’s 2014 phone, the Galaxy S5 - who’s latest supported OS is Marshmallow, a three year old OS.

The majority of comments in the thread are bashing the ad, but completely missing the point of it. The ad is targeting existing customers of iPhone 6 (and similar) devices that have been screwed over by Apple slowing down their devices. Those users may not have considered non-Apple alternatives, and don't want to buy into the expensive X with the goofy looking notch. So its about awareness. They aren't targeting people that have current iPhones, because they already upgraded. Seems pretty simple to understand but seems missed by most here.

I am still annoyed with how retarded my iPhone 6 was rendered by the throttling update. Was actually slower than the ad made it look, with the keyboard lagging so badly I couldn't spell anything. A later update did fix that, so at least I can keep using it. Otherwise, I would have tossed it and gone back to a 5.

The problem is other than the headphone jack and camera module on back, there is virtually no discernible differences in the iPhone 6 through iPhone 8. Viewers will see the ad thinking that it's a newer iPhone model which unfairly paints Apple in a very negative light. (There will be obvious technical differences and limitations between a smart phone released in 2014 versus 2018.)

Yes, but a >1 month old iOS 11 update fixed that. I thought about switching to Android just cause of how annoyed I was, but eh.

Yeah.... it wasn't good.... it isn't good.... it won't be good. Must be related to poor sales I guess if you become this desperate?

I just really don't like when companies name eachother. prop up your product via it's merits. Not by attacking the competition. I hold everyone to the same ideal, regardless of "humour" factor or who produces the add.

And Just because Apple's "whats a computer" add was an unmitigated piece of ****, doesn't mean this one is excused for it's faults

I understand why this site disparages the Samsung ad; but the reality is that it is clearly, carefully targeted advertising. It's aimed at people who currently own iPhone 6's, who are primed for a new phone. There's not much value in targeting iPhone 8 owners to switch right now.

Exactly right, and the ad makes clear that this is what it's doing in the shot of the text from the woman's mother. The point is not a "comparison" of the iPhone 6 and the Samsung Galaxy S9 except in the most superficial sense that a newer phone is an upgrade over an older one. Rather, the point is that users of old iPhones -- particularly those affected by the widely-publicized batter issues -- should consider Samsung's phones when upgrading. They are targeting a particular subset of Apple users who feel burned and who may be open to looking elsewhere.

The "holes" or "execution" issues cited in this piece are anything but. They are calculated, well-executed attempts to make a point Samsung believes will resonate with a particular group. In calling these execution errors, the author seems to have assumed that fairness was a goal and that the makers of the ad failed in achieving it. I would argue that fairness was not a goal except to the extent legally required, and that the point of the ad was to remind iPhone 6 that non-Apple options exist and are quite good. Whether or not you like or agree with this message, I think it will hit home with the people it was intended to reach.

Considering that the exploding one isn’t for sale since almost 2 years... unlike the 6 and 6s which is still being sold by Apple with damaged batteries. Don’t forget Apple phones explode often aswell and instead of being recalled they are resold as refurbished ;)
At least the company I like, Apple, isn’t going anywhere soon. So petty ads make no difference

How exactly did this iOS update fix or remove the iPhone X notch, unless you mean the throttling? For a second there I got excited. :D

Aside from the text message from MOM who said "Have you replaced your IPhone 6 yet?

I mean, they kind of called the phone model in the ad lol.

Why stop at the 6? Why not run an ad comparing the brand new Sammy to the iPhone 4, or the original iPhone that was announced in 2007?

Hell, why compare the new Sammy to any iPhone at all? Maybe Samsung should run an ad trumpeting the superiority of their brand new phone to Apple's Newton?

They are comparing apples to sour grapes, after all.

I get that yes, but most consumers outside of this forum wouldn't know the iPhone 3G from iPhone 8 by name only. They know it by how it looks. They see the phone in the ad and they're thinking it's the latest and greatest model (aside from the X). Samsung is merely taking advantage of most consumer's naivety.

Samsung is clearly going after people that have older iPhones that perform slowly. They are gambling that enough iPhone users can relate to this. We'll see if it works.
(I'd imaging the iPhone users would walk into a store to buy a new S9 and also see other newer iPhones that they could buy for possibly less, especially the iPhone 8, which comes with some good deals, as far as I have seen.)

I can agree with that.

On a side note, aside from that notch haircut that guys look he gave to her in the commercial was as creepy as you can get. That poor kids haircut lol.

These ads are brilliant. They’re clearly targeting those people who haven’t upgraded in a while. Honestly, Samsung Ads are miles better then Apples. The stupid “what’s a computer” ad and the other iPhone ads are trash. Sorry. It’s funnny watching people squirm over these ads though. Feeling a little insecure?

I am not sure why the "what's a computer" commercial got so much hate. I found it to be a refreshing take on how flexible technology is today and how youth adopting and utilizing technology pushes it forward. So much so that terminology that was once ubiquitous is now becoming less and less applicable to the devices we use most. This is why I was so happy that Apple rededicated itself to education.

As for the commercial, I could care less. I really only concern myself with Samsung enough to keep up with whether they will ever have to pay the billion dollars or so that was awarded to Apple for their copying the original phone design. I might buy a Samsung TV too. So there is that.
