It looks like Samsung is supplying the SSD in the MBA.

Apple shipping newer, faster SSDs in latest MacBook Airs
by Chris Foresman | Last updated 3 days ago

Apple launched revised MacBook Air models in the fall of 2010 by going SSD-only with speedy, but custom, small outline SSD modules made by Toshiba. However, some users are now reporting that the most recent MacBook Airs are using what appears to be a Samsung-made module, which is capable of 20-25 percent faster read and write speeds.
According to testing by AnandTech, an SSD that carries the model name SM128C turned in a read speed of 261.1 MBps and a write speed of 209.6 MBps. Those speeds are 24 percent and 19 percent faster, respectively, compared to the Toshiba-made SSDs (model TS128C) that originally shipped in the MacBook Air.
While the manufacturer hasn't been confirmed yet—Apple has not responded to our request for comment—AnandTech believes the "SM" in the model name refers to Samsung. The site noted that the tested speed ratings are comparable to other SSD drives built by Samsung.
We felt that the 11" MacBook Air was very responsive with its equipped SSD module in our review last fall, but a little extra performance never hurts. For now, though, there is no way to guarantee which SSD module you'll get when buying a MacBook Air, and neither Samsung nor Toshiba appear to be offering their modules to consumers. Well-known Mac upgrade source Other World Computing offers the only known replacement SSD modules for the MacBook Air, which are rated at similar performance levels as the purported Samsung modules. Our full review of that upgrade option is coming soon.

Samsung's smartest course of action probably would have been to work with whatever terms Apple had been offering before legal action ensued.

You are assuming Apple offered them any terms.

Apple's suit is largely around Samsung copying Apple's product appearances in many ways. What you are assuming is like Rolls Royce saying to GM, "Your new car design looks just like a Rolls Royce in so many ways a customer can't tell them apart. However if you'll give us "X" amount of money, We'll let you copy us."

Got to love those championing Samsungs televisions.

Horrible, cheap, nasty, overly plastic, flimsy pieces of *****.

Their LED's and Plasma's are reasonable, but I'll never touch their LCD's again.

Had them, sold them, put Bravias through the house. Sorted.

Is there any such thing as an LED TV? Other than that $2500, 11", Half-HD, OLED thingie?

Any TV that says "LED" in big letters on a sticker IS an LCD TV. It just has an LED backlight. (Actually, those bogus phosphor-coated "LEDs" that are really fluorescents—just excited by a blue LED instead of a mercury-vapor tube).

Even more entertaining is the fact that Apple is so arrogant they fail to realize how stupid they look.

Suing their biggest vendor.

It doesn't get any more stupid than that.

Samsung is so arrogant, they fail to realize how stupid they look.

Ripping off their biggest customer. Then suing their biggest customer.

It doesn't get any more stupid than that.

Another repost of this picture that was long since debunked. The picture claims that the Samsung F700 was showed first on Cebit 2006. If you google for "Samsung Cebit 2006" and then for "Samsung Cebit 2007", the first finds lots of photos of Samsung phones that look completely different than any iPhone, the second finds a tech website that dug out a link to their own reporting from Cebit 2007 where the F700 was shown as a reply to the iPhone and the LG phone.

Agreed.

That and Apples incredible profit is what makes them look so paranoid, petty, and stupid.

Instead of acting like the world class company they could be, Apple comes across as fools.

I must admit, I'm much happier being seen with my Galaxy S.

When one is seen in this town (New York) with an iPhone they look at you like "oh, you're one of those snobs".

Yet the irony is they're a dime a dozen here.

Well, say what you want to say but stop abusing Apple fans. For once, you should realise you are on a Apple fan site. Love Apple or hate Apple, show some decency towards Apple fans.

That settles nothing as it is inaccurate.

- Grid of icons: Check
- A bottom line of icons (or dock): Check
- One button: Check
- Round corners on bezel: Check

If this is inaccurate, then Apple's claim is inaccurate as well. Because, sure, there are all sorts of details that make this phone different from the iPhone.

I'm not saying that the iPhone is ripped off from the F700. I'm saying that there are a lot of similarities, just as there are a lot of similarities pointed out in Apple's claim.

I predict they will not stick.

1) I own both.

They are rectangular and have icons on home screens.

There's only so much one can do with smart phone styling.

It's not like Apples on the verge of going out of business.

Much ado over nothing.

Like a teenage bully, Apples beyond stupid.

2) You actually believe clueless sales people?

The fact that "there's only so much you can do with smart phone styling" does not give one company the inalienable right to copy another's patents, or blur the line between their product and the one which they're trying to copy.

The size of Apple's bank account has nothing to do with this. Disney has sued much smaller companies in the past, and won. Because the courts recognize the need to protect valuable intellectual property, even when sofa lawyers don't.

Whether I believe clueless sales people or not is irrelevant. Clueless consumers often do. How else can you explain Android's rise? (zing!).

The dates are wrong as the F700 was unveiled after Apple announced the iPhone at MacWorld in 2007

This settles it:

yes I agree the hands in both those pictures look extremely similar.
I am going to have to side with Samsung on this; apple stole their hand.

As far as the phones go? the looks are similar but still different looking.

... put Bravias through the house. Sorted.

i've done that but with philips instead of sony.

what i don't see to get is why everyone is saying that it's going to be almost "the doom" of samsung if they stop providing components to apple.
rim tablets are on hold because apple took all the panels they need... samsung has more clients that apple.
they have bad, ugly phones? yeah they do, always had.
they are going to loose some income if they stop doing business with apple? yeah.
is it going to be vital from them? not in a remote chance.

don't get me wrong, i love apple but i used to love them more way before... before they start to be a "mobile" company and a greedy one.
and believe me when i say that they will eventually terminate the computer series to replace them with some hybrid ipad/computer thing.
the macbook air was they first try... and they succeed. next is to fuse the osx with the ios (they already said that it will happen) and the macbook pro 13" will be gone and later the rest of them... i just hope i'm wrong.

Mmmm this sort of comments make me believe people do not really understand how production of something like a phone works. Do you guys think Apple started drawing the general outlook and tech aspects of the iPhone just AFTER seeing Samsung's P.o.s.? It doesn't take 1 month to come up with a project like iphone. I think Apple had this thing going on probably years before Samsung even started thinking about a touch phone! Point is, Apple makes the standard and everyone wants to copy it. There's leaders and followers. Apple is a leader. Period.

that samsung looks like it came out from 1975

Not exactly...

They saw the iPhone in January, then rushed to change their ui design. it hows in their crapy look.

Have we seen this take place recently with another samsug product?

3.. 2.. 1.. FIGHT (ding ding)

We are buying apple products and or samsung products so they can toss the money in lawyers instead of r&d. Somebody really toke the Gene Simmons approach: "Make sure there are no incursions. Be litigious. Sue everybody. Take their homes, their cars. Don't let anybody cross that line.".
