Not that it really matters but I'm 100% sure the the iPhone 5 will be larger, with a screen with at least 4 inches and the whole suing and courtcases thing where mostly based on this device and the iPhone 5.

We will see it in the next few weeks and I now I'm gonna be right.:p

As these devices get thinner and thinner, there are fewer and fewer design choices you can make. So it's inevitable that they will start looking like each other.

The entire argument/lawsuit is frivolous if you ask me.
100% agree. There's a pleasing-to-the-eye shape that most manufacturers are settling on and that's just the way it is. No one wants a square phone or a horrible mis-shapen thing like this: http://blog.dealrocker.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Motorola-Photon.jpg

For me, its too big as a phone, I wouldn't want to keep it in my pant or shirt pocket. I like the current iPhone size, though I wouldn't mind a small increase, because its very portable. When I want to do things my iPhone can't do because of its size, I get out my iPad.

I understand the desire to combine the functionality of a pad with the portability of a phone, and I know it will work for some people, but not for me. There are always drawbacks when you try to marry two different things into one and its almost always the case that the end functionality is not as good as that of the two separate devices.

Still, this may be a step towards merging the phone and tablet worlds into one. If you can have a phone with a 5.3" screen, why can't you have a 7" tablet with a cell SIM card.

That's way too big

That's what she said

I'm honestly taken aback by the plaudits shown for Samsung. They do deserve it and I'm glad people can be an Apple user while whilst remain open minded about competitors in the same space.

Thinking about this as I am sick of the 3.5" iPhone screen and the iPad just doesn't cut it with its resolution and lack of I/O.

Copy?? Watch these videos of the devices being used. Then tell me how are they copying?

While we can argue over semantics, Samsung does explicitly do follow the market leader, and this is the actual strategy advocated by the top brass:

- Pick a market explored by an innovator/market leader
- Make products intentionally similar to the market leaders', one might call this copying
- The first iteration of the products is crappy but functional and cheap and similar enough to the market leader's
- Spend heavy on R&D to make the products that eventually outperform the innovator
- Make products faster and cheaper
- Diversify product line and flood the market.
- ???
- PROFIT

They have an excellent ability to making an existing product faster, thinner, cheaper, etc. However they are usually pretty bad at making a new market or the software. They intentionally wait until others explorer the market first, and then try to brute force the market with their semiconductor prowess and sheer number of products.

You can, they released the Galaxy tab 7.7, which is exactly that :)

As for if it looks like the iPhone 5 (or at least the Photo Stream iPhone), then most definitely it does. But the question remains... who copied who?!

You don't have to copy someone. There is the possibility of chance happening. ;)

I have gigantic lobster thumbs and the Galaxy Note is making them happy. I can't wait to check one out in person.

What sucks is it'll probably never get updated in the States Yay for Android fragmentation, sucky carriers, and screwiness.

I want one too but I really don't think I'd be smart to buy another non-Nexus Android phone. Maybe we'll all be lucky and the Nexus Prime will be a rebranded Galaxy Note! :p *sigh* it'll probably just be a rebranded GSII like the Nexus S

It's been stated by the samsung reps at IFA that it would be upgraded to Ice cream sandwich when it is released(slashgear says it won't be released until q1 next year - from samsung reps). Also I'm positive they already have an ice cream sandwich port in testing as Samsung is rumored to be releasing the first Ice cream sandwich device(nexus prime). But chances are this will launch with ice cream sandwich out the gate. Ice cream sandwich is supposed to be released around November. I'll prob get an iPhone 5 on sprint and buy a galaxy note unlocked for use with Att go phone plan like I have my GS2.

I can't honestly say I know anyone who actually uses their smartphone as a phone primarily these days. I get 1500 minutes a month on my family plan(4 lines) and have never seen more than 700 of those minutes ever used. Texting, games, and browsing are the main ways I interact with my phone. Bigger screen = better experience for those activity.

That's just amazing right there. Pen seems to be very accurate with not final software.

I would like to have one.

But, you really need to talk always with a earphone and microphone set...

Hm.. I am not sure..

My IP3GS is now coming to two years and it is time to upgrade...

I am waiting for IP5.. but to be honest I am very impressed with Android OS and if IP5 is much of the same.. same size, similar OS... I might go with this or similar Samsung or some other mobile... Quite like the large screen...

People talk about iPad.. Sure.. you bought it.. You better like it :)... I haven't, nor I want to.. Larger screen phone would be quite enough.. If Apple does not want to provide the larger screen phone so their followers will buy iPad.. well.. thats ok.. I want the larger screen phone.. and thanks to the other providers one can get it elsewhere..

This Samsung looks impressive... Android too.. Might be a winner..

I, for one am not impressed with the dazzle n razzle of this phone / almost tablet monstrosity!

firstly, I have spent a fortune on buying apps for my iPhone/iPad, many are highly specific to my vocation- so switching to android would not work for Me!

Secondly, since coppin an iPad, I have found less n less usage of my iPhone- the only situation where i don't have my iPad is when I'm meeting firneds, out for dinner etc: the ip4 is more than enough for those basic uses!

thirdly, being a jailbreak veteran since the iPhone 3G era, I know exactly how to optimise my iPhone to my sepcification. switching to android because it looks glitzy, larger screen+ it's alien OS would be redundant decision for me personally. I just love how well IOs works for me- after a few tweaks of course!

By no means am I a blinded fanboi- I actually really like samsung, and will only ever buy samsung TVs + bluray players, but for laptops, tablets + phones- I still can not find a viable option that works as effectively for me!

Isn't that what the cyanogen mod thing is for?

I will buy either the Galaxy Note or the iPhone 5.

I feel the iPhone 5 will not be that big of an upgrade, specially if the display is finally 3.7 and not 4. If its 3.7 then not even the iPhone 6 will have a 4 display or bigger, since Apple will not change the display size twice in two years.

I prefer iOS, but I kind of want to try Android. Its not just a 5.3 display... Its also HD. That very important. The SGS 2 has 4.3 but the resolution is ****, so it makes no big difference with the iPhone 4. On the other hand, a 5.3 display with HD resolution is something to really consider.

Webs and text will look amazing. Apps like twitter or Facebook will be able to show more content thanks to the bigger resolution.

My days of custom ROMs are over... I don't have time anymore, and I can't sacrifice stability for anything. My phone is a very important thing for my school and work. I hate to say it, but that's what it's like now (for me)

it looks cool but imo it is way to large to be used as an everyday phone. Oh well I guess it doesn't matter since they aren't planning to release it in the US.

Your very right. Not many people want to spend their free time learning how to install roms and other stuff. Most roms are not 100% stable and some features of the phone stop working.

This is why I chose the iPhone 4 when it came out. I want stability, but of course you don't need to install roms on your android phone if you don't want to.

Let me explain how manufacturing works. If Apple paid 50 cents for the buttons on the iPhone 4, instead of $1.00 per button as they did on the prior models, they are saving 50 cents per button, times the millions of phones they sell, if your good at math, you can figure out just how much money they saved which translates into massive profits. That's profit taking.

It's an indisputable fact that Apple has grown into one of the largest, most profitable companies in the world, by charging high prices for their products. Therefore by cutting corners, and maintaining what is widely reported as a 30% profit margin as compared to the competitions 7%, you can easily see how much Stevie Boy is lining the companies coffers with.

One look at their stock price will also confirm this. And I know from a first hand position, as I have been an Apple shareholder for over 15 years.

I'm happy for you and your friends, but this proves absolutely nothing.

If you do a search of this forum, there are many threads where the buttons are failing. It's a real problem. Apple typically likes to stick their head in the sand, and deny they build anything less than a perfect product. That's why they have the gall, to actually ask those coming in out of the warranty by a short few months to hand over $200.

There is a widely held concept in legal circles, it's called "Reasonable Service Life". For this button to fail this early, is not reasonable service life. Not when Apple has a track record of never having a home button issue on the years of prior models.

Garbage is what you put into the can.

I seriously think that people all over the world that buy Samsung Smartphones beginning with the Galaxy S series, would agree with you. I've had three now and they are quite nice.

Welcome to 2011, many products are made of plastic including a lot of highly stressed car parts and other components, so the myth that plastic isn't any good died in the 1950's. Material quality and sophistication is far superior today

I do respect your preference for a tiny screen, we all have different values.

However world wide, there is not one high end full featured Android smartphone that has a display smaller than a full 4.0" and ranging to over 5". So instead taking a narrow view of only the US, I prefer to take the big picture Global View.

The demand for the Galaxy S II is very high and that's why we are getting them last as compared to other countries. I was fortunate enough to be overseas on a business trip when they were released in the UK, and I bought one there. Brought it home to use on the AT&T network, and it's been stellar.

Finally I have included two links from the worlds foremost wireless phone site. One for the iPhone and one for the Galaxy S II. You will notice the voting poll results. One where people from all over the world rate the phones.

You will notice the iPhone is only rated at 6.9 out of 10.
http://goo.gl/Tzwi

The Samsung Galaxy S II is rated at an impressive 8.8 out of 10.
http://goo.gl/qcOQw

That speaks volumes about how a vast number of people all over the world view these two products.

Cheers :)

The Rating sys. is flawed. Anyone can vote numerous times. You don't even have to login or anything.

This is like a homage of the 1990's gadgets with its classic large size and stylus done in a modern form. People forget sometimes how big are gadgets used to be. They were bricks! Everything from the Zack Morris phone, Apple Newton, Palm Pilots, Walkman, and Game Boy were huge back then. The Note looks to be a tweener. Either people don't mind carrying their phone + tablet or they solve it with just one device with some compromise. I generally am not a tablet fan. I have zero interest in an iPad or any tablet that pretty much runs the same mobile OS just in a screen 3-6 inches bigger. I believe laptops should start offering touchscreen more than tablets which are overpriced and only do less than a real computer. For anyone who wants to save money and some space, I can see why some would be interested in a 5.3-inch phone.
