I want that screen...on my iphone. That's about it. Samsung is OEM and the hardware looks good. Software is still the other half though and anything from samsung is bloat. The unwashed masses don't care though. If I going with google, I'd get a google phone though, not a bloatware special POS from samsung.

Yeah, but you realize that the lion's share of app profits still belongs to iOS right? That's why many major developers release iOS versions first. It doesn't matter how many phones run Android if a great majority of those don't install paid apps.

Don't think about what's happening today but what's going to happen tomorrow (aka think about what's going to happen in five years if current trend prevails). In order to stay truly competitive Apple must have very strong and innovative flagship and competitive low end. In 2009 Android had 4% market share and now it's over 80%. This isn't promising trend for iOS and app development/developers. I truly hope Apple will stay competitive. It's also worth mentioning that my most important apps are not paid apps but free apps used to control third party systems. In this scenario market share is very important. I would truly hate (understatement) to switch to any Google operating system / poroduct(s) but it seems many are more than happy to sell their privacy to get something for "free".

I hope you're kidding - the iPhone 7 Plus already looks like a brick next to the S7 EDGE. Samsung was at least a year ahead of Apple. That lead might shrink this year as Apple is now blatantly copying Samsung's design.

Samsung has nothing on Apple in my book. Period.

Reliable mobile phone leaker Evan Blass this morning posted what looks like an official press image of the Galaxy S8, Samsung's first flagship phone of 2017.

Coming on the back of last year's Note7 debacle, the S8 represents a hopeful comeback for Samsung's smartphone business and is likely to be the biggest rival to Apple's radically redesigned "iPhone 8" expected to launch later this year.

The single rendered image appears to confirm the expected new minimal-bezel design and the absence of a home button on the front of the handset, with the larger edge-to-edge curved OLED display showing launch icons in the bottom corners of the screen.

On the right side of the handset is a power button, with those on the left side likely to be volume controls and a separate button to activate Bixby, Samsung's new virtual assistant, developed by the original creators of Siri.

It's unclear from the picture which model is shown, but the available display sizes of its Quad HD+ Super AMOLED panel will reportedly be 5.8 inches and 6.2 inches (the latter being for the S8 "Plus", according to Blass). The screen also teases the Galaxy S8 launch date of March 29, as confirmed by Samsung during its relatively low-profile appearance at the Mobile World Congress.

Further spec details have yet to be officially confirmed, but the S8 is expected to feature the Exynos 9 Series 8895 processor, Samsung's first chip built on 10-nanometer FinFET process technology, along with USB-C, wireless charging, iris scanning, a fingerprint sensor on the back, 4GB of RAM and at least 64GB of internal storage, with a 12 megapixel rear camera and an 8 megapixel front camera also in the offing.

Apple is widely expected to use Samsung-made AMOLED display technology in at least one of three possible iPhones to be released this year. Compared to LCD screens, OLED displays are thinner, lighter, and offer more flexibility, making modifications to a phone's form factor and geometry easier to undertake.

Added to these advantages are several performance gains over LCD panels, due to the fact that each sub-pixel in an OLED display is individually directly powered, which typically results in better color accuracy, image contrast accuracy, and screen uniformity.

With an edge-to-edge design, the "iPhone 8" is said to be similar in size to the 4.7-inch iPhone, but with a display the size of the 5.5-inch iPhone. Rumors suggest it will feature a 5.8-inch display with 5.15 inches of usable area, with the rest given over to a "function area" for virtual buttons. Other rumored features include a glass body, iris scanning and some form of wireless charging. Apple is expected to release its new iPhone line-up in the fall.

That's a really pretty device

If that were the case then the older devices would have more up to date OS's, since they have had time to release and Samsung to patch, but they don't. It's still release OS+1.

Nice rule of thumb if not totally true.
No matter how we want to package it, the method Google and Apple use to announce then roll out new versions is very different. You can't call them the same and then claim one has faults in comparison.

Can you put screen protectors and cases on phones with curved screens? I drop my phone a lot.

Yes. Had a 6 Edge - had a screen protector that was edge to edge and a case that was the same.
Bought on Amazon. (Tech Armor and OBLIQ)

Still has fairly big bezels. Nothing to see here.
So will the iPhone 8, in fact it will simply follow what the Samsung S6 was. Those that think the iPhone 8 will be this new incredible thing just needs to look back 5 years with what Apple has released, they were always behind and will always be behind. Jobs is no longer here, the dream that was Apple died with him, now it's just operating like the rest of them. Genius like that comes just once in a life time. Stop hyping the iPhone 8, if you were in front of me right now I would bet you a $1000 that the iPhone 8 will be nothing special.

You want special, check out what Xiaomi created with the Mi Mix and soon the Mi Mix 2, Sony's new flagship will have the best mobile camera available today, since Apple use Sony's camera modules, they won't give up their edge to Apple. Samsung's new S8 will have less of a bezel than Apple's iPhone 8, in fact Apple won't even be using AMOLED, but OLED. So what, please tell, what will the iPhone have that none of us hasn't sent before, wirless charging over the air, dream on, they're not even using normal wirless charging. Heck, their not even using NFC to its full advantage, why not, simple, iOS, it's a POS OS.

The fact is this, if Apple can't make an phone for under $300 and sell to the idiots for a $1000, it won't happen. WHich means all of that fantasy tech that you believe is coming, oh buts it's been 10 years, yeah, sorry it will never, ever happen. These people are all about the greed, that's it, nothing else. As such if you buy an iPhone 8, your an idiot. Especially when iOS is such a horrible OS, I mean you can't even download a file in the background that takes longer than 10 minutes to finish, ooohhhh super advanced. File system, no, multitasking, no, I mean not in the traditional sense as you can't run multiple apps in the background, FYI, I run at least 9 apps including a friggin LAMP server on my Android phone as well as scriots, PHP, Python, Perl, MySQL, etc. Inner app communication, the worst in the biz, just horrible, external monitor support, again, horrid, I mean, just so, so, bad, UI customizations, no, the list of deficiencies is so long that it would take up a chapter in War and Peace. iOS is, well, just garage. This all do to that ridiculous Walled Garden nonsense, excuse mw, walled prison.

Yes, iOS is a prison and thats just the way Apple likes it.

How do you know exactly what display Apple is using?

The future is a riddle only time can answer.

One thing I am certain of though - one bets against Apple to their own detriment.

And the Titanic was unsinkable too.
[doublepost=1488408119][/doublepost]
Inferior to what? You mean the slower performance and worse camera? Last time I checked the iPhone's display was even rated as one of the best if not the best.

People with no understanding of technology shouldn't be allowed to comment here at all. Your post is based on "Samsung 8GB ram, iPhone 3GB" Samsung must have the better specs.

A person with deeper knowledge of the matter will tell you that most android phones are quite wasteful in using their resources and can't even take advantage of them.

In a real-world speed comparison, the iPhone 7 probably still bests any other phone And I wouldn't be surprised if this was still the case when the new Samsung comes out.

It is tiring to see how people look at synthetic benchmarks which is like driving a golden Ferrari - a glorified penis extension.

But specs matter when they favor Apple. Ditto for market share and sales numbers.
[doublepost=1488408325][/doublepost]
Beautiful phone, I just hate android more than I hate IOS.
[doublepost=1488370203][/doublepost]

Yep, I hate fanboys. Just get what you like and stop wasting your breath and our time slamming what others like.
[doublepost=1488370345][/doublepost]

agreed. I like my 6s and find that its replaced my iPad for reading. I tried the 7 plus and it was a terrible experience, if Samsung can succeed in increasing the screen size, while only minimaly increasing the size that's a win/win.

My wife has a 7 Plus and we both think it's a great experience. If I could find a convenient way to carry it I'd get one too.

I'm not an edge fan either. However, the embedded video does give me hope they will continue with the flat design as well. I just got an S7 and hope the S9 will continue to offer the flat bezel when I get a new phone. Or, Apple could allow customization and tempt me to get an iPhone by then. Unlikely, so S9 it will most likely be.

The S8 Looks like a solid phone. I think the whole "Edge" design is cunning, but I believe will be short lived. If Apple follows suit (Which I don't believe they will), I'm curious to see how it would differ from the S8. With OLED being heavily rumored, It should be interesting to see how it turns. Then you have to factor Micro-LED in the bigger Picture (Perhaps @Cubanmissiles can weigh in on this more).

I see the exact opposite. Samsung releases a OMG wow phone, then in the weeks after we find the flaws with it, like the features are gimmicks and don't work as expected... then Apple releases their phone, and it's better and works. Same every year.

You mean then Apple releases their phone and latest version of iOS that has flaws and bugs.
[doublepost=1488408792][/doublepost]
The PRIMARY reason is that people with iOS phones will PAY for apps, while the majority of Android users won't. Why are you forgetting the #1 reason?

The reason the majority of Android users won't pay is:
#1. They bought cheaper phones not because of Android, but simply because the phones are cheaper. They don't have a lot of money, and won't buy a lot of apps.
#2. They pirate more.
#3. There's a lot of crap on the Android store.

Lots of people who don't have much money have iPhones. There's a lot of crap in the App Store too.

And the Titanic was unsinkable too.

And the Chinese empire lasted almost five thousand years.

Anyone can throw out meaningless corollaries. It doesn't mean anything. Apple is nothing like the titanic.

Could Apple fail? Sure. Just like any company.

Will it fail?

Where were all of you when Apple was being criticised left and right from 2012 to 2014 for supposedly being behind the curve?

If you want me to believe you know how and why Apple will fail, then first demonstrate to me you understood how Apple grew, and how it grew to be so large in the first place.

Exactly.

Comparisons of Apple to Blackberry or Microsoft under Ballmer's tenure completely miss the mark. The Apple of today is nothing like those companies, even when they were at the peak of their success and popularity.

Do these phones still get crappy carrier-based updates? I jumped on the android bandwagon one time (galaxy s3) and the phone was handcuffed by AT&T so it rarely got updated.
That's the biggest drawback to Android, IMO.
[doublepost=1488409348][/doublepost]
While the Galaxy phones themselves are nice, the biggest problem with them when you compare directly to iPhone is the lack of support.

Here are a list of Galaxy S phones, their release year, their latest officially supported OS and that OS's release year

S2 (2011) - Jelly Bean (2012)
S3 (2012) - Kit Kat (2013)
S4 (2013) - Lollipop (2014)
S5 (2014) - Marshmallow (2015)

Compare that to iPhone where the iPhone 5 (2012) is running a 2017 OS.

It still amazes me this doesn't get brought up more. It's a huge factor when comparing like for like.

A good point and quite true.
[doublepost=1488409733][/doublepost]
Does this mean if Samsung beats apple to market a phone with no home button samsung will be able to sue apple instead of the usual apple suing samsung. That is if samsung manages to release a device without a home button first before apple.

People will say Samsung copied Apple.
[doublepost=1488410015][/doublepost]
Well, Apple killed the headphone jack and Samsung kills the home button.

Now that's courage.

Nice looking device for sure. Too bad about the built in junkware and bloat. Still would probably go for it to upgrade to from my S7e if I did have spare funds to do so.
Samsung looks well on their way to be their own Google or Apple, meaning have their own services, app store, hardware accessories etc. Trying to get away from android.

Probably it's only disadvantage. Most people who criticize Samsung's S-series phones haven't tried them - they are actually beautiful devices and the displays are very clearly better quality than what Apple has been using on its iPhones.

There is no disadvantaged with having a phone with the Android OS. Its pure preference and thats about it. Android is a true multitasking OS and more people prefer it because it runs and acts like a windows file system. Basically like more detail and the ability for an OS that runs like windows. People who prefer iOS want something that just runs and dont want to worry about details and have to go the extra mile with clicks and things like that

Lets be frank here. We can all admire and be slightly jealous of a competitors device. As far as hardware goes, major props and victory to Samsung. Let's hope iPhone 8 has a similar or better home run.

No matter what Samsung does as far as copying the iPhone, the iPhone always looks much nicer, cleaner, and better built. And I believe this year will be no different. It's gonna be a bad A$$ looking phone. Apple is long overdue and I think Ive and team have something big planned. (I hope)
You are right.
That terrible branding, with samsung on the front and the back, those sensors on the top chin, and the gold/blue/silver fronts make it look cheap.
They should focus on solving that. It is just too much and tacky.
Make a logo, put it on the back, try to hide these sensors and make the front white or black and differentiate with the back glass and alu on the sides.

Is there a point, though? A loyal iPhone user won't suddenly switch to the Sammy or vice-versa. People may switch if they don't harbor brand loyalty and don't mind switching between ecosystems every year or other year.

Wow, you really want t make your point on an apple forum.

Doesn' t matter.
I think apple is actually at the point of closing the spec gap with top androids. And better it.
They already are in the lead in the gpu/cpu/soc department.
The gap with the higher res oled screens is about to close this year and a few years after, there will be micro led, of which apple has bought a lot of patents and kniwledge aquiring luxvue.
They lost in the camera department for one year, last year with the s7, that had quite a lead. But apple closed the cap a little. And this year, i believe they will lead or be at least on par.
About the design: with this oled screens, bezelles iphones will be possible, and at least on par with lg/samsung. Apple has quite the lead in materials, they already had alu for years, before the other manifacturers like lg and samsung caught up. They have tons of knowledge on other high end materials like ceramic and (black) stainless steel, sapphire already incorporated in their apple watch, they really have the lead on that.
Wireless charging: samsungs, etc. lead will be gone this year.
No physical button tech /haptic feedback: apple has at least a 2 year lead with forcetouch, 3d touch, taptic engine, and creating the feel of a mechanical button with haptics.

So all of those techies with just looking at their spec sheet instead of user experience, will be in for a treat this year. It took a little time before apple caught up on paper specs, but by spending massive amounts on R&D and buying machines for suppliers, this will be the year that it will really happen. At a price of course.....
But it will have ios and for me it is worth it.
