These controlled leaks by apple are actually genius (assuming it's from apple). Rumors hit the web, competitors try to beat them, then the products flop. That's what happens when you rush and build a half-assed product.

Exactly - right out of the Steve Jobs play book - how to perfect others failures.. The Samsung watch early release was brilliant :). This back to the old Apple - --

Bingo

Samsung's strategy in mobile electronics can be summed up in three ways:

1) Try and see what Apple has in the pipeline and get it out before they do

2) Introduce 50 different size variations of basically the same thing and see which sticks

3) Develop gimmicky software features to distinguish products from the other me-too products in the market

I find it odd that so people want larger phones but smaller tablets. I just don't get it.

Agree 100%...

I have a MBP and an iPhone.
MBP > any tablet for performance, screen size and battery life.

iPhone > any other phone (that can fit in the side pocket of regular jeans without a struggle).

IMO Android captures the numbers market... big screen, big CPU, big battery.

iPhone for me covers the stylish/convenient market. Small and performance well beyond anything with the same battery size, form factor and power consumption. This is what Apple do and why I love them!

Preemptive damage control.

I don't think anyone doubts that Samsung would almost definitely have not released this, were it not for the iPad Pro rumors.

Eh, seeing as Samsung has released a large number of tablet models in different sizes and flavors already, it seems very likely that this was coming sooner or later anyway.

Bingo...
Galaxy S4 sells well... every other size fails and wastes the profits they gained.

iPhone and iPad... all models sell extremely well. Apple's yet to have a failed device in the iOS market. iPad dominate the tablet market, iPhones have 25-35% of the market (more than moat other single flagship phone sales), other Android/Chrome machines sell poorly inside their sub-categories (e.g. iWatch).

The winner for Android is Google because they get all the ad revenue without having to develop custom versions of their OS, a UI significantly different from Apple's or product launches for hardware.

Androids are like tats... by being different they are all the same.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't...

I find the comments about Samsung copying amusing at times...

If Apple brings it out first, then Samsung are copying. If Samsung bring it out first - then Samsung are still copying...!

Strangely, when Apple said a smaller pad would be no good, and Samsung brought out a smaller pad, nearly everyone concurred here... until Apple copied the trend for smaller pads and brought one of their own out.

(Or should I be saying that Samsung just copied them in advance?)

Same with the watch. Clearly it seems, Samsung is "copying" by bringing one out before Apple.

I get it that this is very much an Apple fan site - but come on guys, there has to be a limit to the fanboy mentality.

Last time I looked, someone had brought out a keyboard, attached to a small screen on a portable battery powered computer - before Apple. We called them laptops and then, late into the game Apple "copied" the concept and did their own. Or maybe everyone else just copied them in advance....!

am i the only one who doesn't see why one would need a bigger screen? the regular iPad is more than enough for most apps, unless it was able to multitask i don't see the purpose.

Unlike iOS, Android has proper support for multitasking and Samsung's smartphones with bigger screens can run and display multiple apps simultaneously.

I don't think that tablets in general are useful at all, but at least Samsung's models support true multitasking.

The first mention of an iPad Pro I've seen was from MacRumors on November 19, 2013. I doubt Samsung could have made their own in about a month and produced it in numbers.

Exactly, if anything, diehards are pre-empting the success of the larger tablet by saying Apple thought of the idea first. Why? because the success of the Galaxy Note series took them completely by surprise and now it's Apple who are following in the footsteps of Samsung in that regard. Apple rumoured to be bringing large iPhones out soon.

Samsung paved the way for larger phones with are deemed ridiculous until Apple follow suit. Same pattern with the Nexus 7, now Apple will do iPad mini even though the company at one point said that form factor was DOA. iPhone 5C tried to capture the lower income market but is failing miserably at that, because it isn't cost effective enough. Apple is being led by the nose to diversify it's product portfolio, so if anyone is doing the copying, it's Apple.

multitasking as shown in the video and a pressure sensitive digitizer (with stylus) is very exciting and ahead of iOS. I've always felt the iPad could do so much more but is being let down by iOS.
It's the apps that make iOS shine, Android tablets are still a disappointment when it comes to tablet apps.

I disagree. Its just a bigger sized screen. Many other tablet manufacturers have been doing over 12" tablets for some time now.

Apple really has to start leaking all kinds of ridiculous product ideas to see all the crap Samsung puts out trying to beat them to market with. :)

(FYI, I'd never buy a 13 inch iPad)

(FYI 2, I'd consider the iPad Mini if it had full phone capabilities).

You are the strongest proof I've ever seen that there is simply NO telling what consumers want....
To me, saying that adding 3 inches to an iPad would make me lose interest.... but, hey- I'd love a 7" iPhone, just seems beyond absurd.
Lol, to each their own... I have a feeling we will all be spoiled for choice more sooner than later. =)

The 4-app ability to multitask is actually amazing...

No. No it's really not.
We must've not watched the same video.
I was eager to see tablet multitasking on such a huge screen. I really wanted to be impressed. Sadly, when that part of the video played... I literally cringed! What a horribly busy, cludgy, confusing hot mess. Gross. Split may've been fine.. obviously four simply doesn't work. And if Engadget noticed the same performance stutters as on the 10.1, don't you think they'd be significantly worse with four apps on screen?? Not sure why anybody would cheerlead this.
I like the look of the Magazine UX, I see the point.... with that much real estate, icons would get cluttery & painstaking. It seems like an elegant solution- which is why the horrible four panel multitasking mode stands out in such blatant and stark contrast.
I hope Apple can give us multitasking NOTHING like this.

I disagree and think the argument is unfair. There is no doubt Apple has 'inspired' Samsung a lot, so I see where you're coming from.

However, if there's one company that's famous for experimenting with different screen sizes, it's Samsung! The first Tab was one of the first 7" tablets, whereas the Note was the first 5" smartphone. From there on, they have made products in every screen size imaginable when Apple was still stuck on the 3,5" iPhone 4S and 9,7" iPad2/3.

I seriously believe Samsung would have released this regardless the iPad Pro rumours.

That's because this is an apple fanboy forum, they can do no wrong here.

lol, so true! the really funny thing is how everybody laughed at Apple, posting pictures of a 10' iPhone, or the iMat. seems like samsung is the one who is heading in that direction :D

i guess when the iPad pro is released, we will see a 15" samsung tablet :p

Quick, let's tell Samsung that Apple is producing a 3-wheeled, two person car that is powered by sunshine and rainbows. I'd love to see what they come up with.

elementary, my dear Watson: they will introduce a 4 wheeled two person car that is powered by super clear analysts' tears :p
