Samsung today held a virtual Galaxy Unpacked event where it unveiled its next-generation smartphones that will compete with Apple's 2020 iPhone lineup, set to come out in the fall.

Samsung announced the launch of the Galaxy Note 20 and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, the two newest devices in the Note lineup, and, more notably, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, Samsung's latest foldable smartphone.

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 features a 7.6-inch screen that uses thin glass instead of plastic to protect the display. When folded, the front display measures in at 6.2 inches. It's equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ processor, 12GB RAM, and 512GB storage, plus there's a new camera that uses a hole punch design instead of a notch.

Samsung aimed to make the Z Fold 2 a significant improvement over the original Galaxy Fold in terms of durability and functionality. Samsung says the hinge has been improved and the overall structure has been reinforced so it's not as delicate as it was before. Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but it's expected to come out in September, which is also when we'll learn more about it.

The Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra are Samsung's new flagship Note smartphones. The $1,000 Note 20 features a 6.7-inch 60Hz AMOLED display with a hole punch camera, a Snapdragon 865+ processor, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, a 4,300mAh battery, and a three camera setup with a 12-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, and a 64-megapixel telephoto camera.

Samsung's higher-end Galaxy Ultra also comes with a 6.9-inch AMOLED display, but the high end model supports up to 120Hz refresh rates. There's a Snapdragon 865+ processor, 12GB RAM, 128GB or 512GB storage, microSD slot, and a 4,500mAh battery.

The Ultra version of the Note has an impressive camera setup with a 12-megapixel telephoto lens that supports 5x optical zoom and 50x hybrid zoom, along with a 108-megapixel wide-angle camera and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, plus an autofocus system that works with a laser.

Both Galaxy 20 Note phones are compatible with 5G networks, come with S Pens, and have fingerprint sensors and facial recognition for biometric protection. They support wireless charging and feature IP68 water and dust resistance.

Samsung also unveiled the $170 Galaxy Buds Live with Active Noise Cancellation, which are more affordable than Apple's AirPods Pro with the same noise canceling features. Galaxy Buds come in black, white, and bronze.

There's also a new tablet, the Galaxy Tab S7, and a new Galaxy Watch 3 with sleep tracking, ECG support, and blood pressure readings.

Samsung's event can still be watched on YouTube for those who are interested in a full rundown on all the features in the new devices.

The Galaxy Buds Live, Samsung's new Note devices, and the other Samsung devices with the exception of the Fold 2 will go on sale on August 6. Pre-ordering the Note 20 or the Note 20 Ultra will provide Samsung users with a credit that can be used on the Samsung website or the Shop Samsung app.

Samsung's new devices will directly compete with the iPhone 12 lineup, which Apple is expected to unveil in September and release starting in October.

Apple has four smartphones in the works, including 5.4 and 6.1-inch affordable devices and higher-end 6.1 and 6.7-inch devices that will rival the Galaxy Note 20 smartphones, but Apple has no foldable iPhone technology at this time to match the Galaxy Z Fold 2, and it's not clear if or when the Cupertino company will release a foldable iPhone.

I agree that competition is good for consumers. And, there's no doubt that Apple isn't afraid to stomp on others' patents whenever they want to. However, this stuff is so skanky! ECG, sleep tracking, noise cancelation, form factor rip-offs. Calling it the Galaxy Note 20 is such a dumb trick, making people think that Samsung phones have been in the marketplace longer than iPhone 12, really? I strongly agree with the "soulless" comments, but it's worse. We have become so accustomed to the reality that Samsung creates the blatantly ripped-off versions of Apple products, that we are somehow de-sensitized to it.

Everyone is free to purchase what they want, and no one should be bashed for owning a Samsung product. Yes, there are features on Samsung phones which have been shown to be better in comparison. But, I can never see myself owning a Samsung mobile device.

Not seeing much value over the Apple equivalent's. I think Samsung should refocus their efforts to the mid-range. I am not sure why anyone would spend here instead of Apple where you will get better performance, security, privacy, ecosystem, apps, build quality, and support.

Tab 7 comes with AMOLED 120 Hz(way different than LCD at 120 Hz), bundled S Pen, Expandable Memory, Cellular option(You can send and receive WhatsApp, SMS, Make calls, 5G option unlike iPad) seems to be far superior to iPad. I still use Galaxy Tab S2, no problems at all. They don’t price like iPads with various storage options.

It’s LCD.

I prefer the sleek, simplistic design of the Apple Watch. It also allows for customization via the screen, case and watch band options. Since getting my first, (series 0), I’ve only worn Apple watches.

Then they should have just put it in the left side where there is no rear camera. Please tell me there's another sensible reason for this.

Edit: Sorry I missed the last part of your comment but I still stand by what I said.
Because of Flex Mode in the L shape position, you would not use it with camera hump down on the table as it would not lay flat.

The screen camera pin hole needs to be on the same side as the back camera

How’s the biometric face detection? Can these still be fooled with a photograph? If so, I wouldn’t take my chances buying one.

The issue is , with rounded apple watch..people, who indeed has real mechanical watches will always compare and will never buy this...the look of an rounded digital watch it will always look cheap compared to the mechanical...thats why Apple is an almost 2 tril $ company, because they talk with the right people...until apple watch, they talked with the CEO of companies like Rolex, Audemar Piguet etc....so...smart people, talk with those who did watches for decades with centuries of history....others...just pretend and try to copy, like samsung in this case, the big watches manufactures

uh what? got any sources? sounds like a bunch of made up nonsense. No one is going to compare a Piguet to an Apple Watch, round or not.

They made it rectangular because the software was easier to integrate in a "list interface"

I think you are a little behind the times and need to do a bit more research to realize how far off you are with these comments

What would the iPhone be without Samsung displays, chips and other parts? Non-existent?

Sorry but I get tired of people on both sides slamming ios and android, mac and PC just because they use one and not the other or a feature was copied. They all copy each other so let's just stop with those inane who copied who messages. The better the competition the better products end users get to choose from and that works perfect for my liking.

If a device is completely awful regardless of brand fine, but Samsung has put out quality devices for a long time.

Well except for the ones that would catch fire and that is a fair complaint but that's been some time now.

I was talking about product decisions, not where parts are sourced. Plus supply chain stuff isn’t funny. This is. 🤣

Poor comparison, as iPhones don’t have QHD resolution quality

Don’t give Apple a free pass for having 60hz in 2020

Some great products announced by Samsung. Fold 2 looks much improved and note as always has the best features on a phone

And you gave Samsung a free pass for their 60hz tablets in 2017?! 🤣

And you gave Samsung a free pass for their 60hz tablets in 2017?!

Another awful comparison, 60hz on phones in 2020 is far worse than 60hz screens in 2017 on tablets when high refresh rates was very new until 2018-2019. no flagship should have 60hz in 2020 really not over 1k which the 12 pros will be with the highest being 1500 most likely

honest question, wasn’t last year’s version of the high end model a 10x optical zoom? This one says 5x

They will NEVER have what apple have.
just look at the presenters, no soul with no human touch - all fake with weird asian vibe on top.

thank god for apple.

Love to see Apple doing their launch in mandarin or Korean; I think it would be rather soulless?

The watch looks decent. If they ever got approval for any of the tech outside Korea, it would be a good health tracking device as it can do ECGs, Blood pressure and O2 Sats. However I doubt any of this will be available outside of South Kore.

They just announced FDA approval for the ECG

How is the sleep tracking a rip off? Samsung watches have been able to do this for years.

Do they all come with ads backed in the stock apps? lol Just wait two or three weeks and they will be BOGO or discounted by 600-700 dollars. As always, flashy hardware but no real integration or soul.

Pretty sure the Note 20 non ultra has a plastic back.

I bought my 11 Pro Max for $600 off back in April 🤷🏾‍♂️

As a former Samsung owner (S3, S6, S7, & S10) the base Note 20 is a slap in the face. Way to move backwards on many objective metrics then still ask $999 for the phone. Shame on Samsung.

Soulless devices

Bro ... it's better than the devices ... 44:13 into the video (link in this article) the initial applause from the Samsung team employees after CEO T.M. Roh made his open statement is PRICELESS>

(all mentions starting from Top Row, Left to Right.)

UpperLeft Qaundrant:
This guy in blue is more interested in watching another video while us us the viewers is eating it. lol
This next guy MUST be using a Dell since we're seeing the Nose Camera in full use.
This guy isn't sure what he's cheer-leading about (feather to the mether).
This last guy is completely motionless - I think He painted eyes on his glasses and is sleeping.

BottomLeft Qaundrant:
This lady is actually thinking, I'm not in the right video conference am I?
This next lady is thinking I know the pricing of these is just going to be ridiculous, but I can dream pricing will be fair.
This guy here ... doesn't look impressed. Just waiting for confirmation to get paid.

UpperRight Qaundrant: (my favourite)
This is NOT happy. 'These products suck, no matter what TM says. If he doesn't like it ...Come at me bro!' lol.
This lady in blue, 'I could be watching AppleTV+ right now, TM you're making me miss a show, Grrrr'
This lady looking down is probably playing a CandyCrush game or shopping online or watching the next big K-Pop group video'
This lady is standing up, probably ready to walk out of the office. Definitely ready to bail the moment TM's speech is over lol.
This guy in blue with glasses is straight up pissed-off !! He does NOT approve of Samsung's event.
The other guy in blue below him isn't paying attention, probably gaming.
This guy in green is like "what does TM mean by 'Intelligent Connections'? What connection would someone make that is NOT intelligent in the first place, if they're coherent?"
This lady here I don't think was clapping or delayed.

BottomRight Qaundrant:
This guy is definitely laughing a joke someone at home made off camera - he doesn't give a damn.
This guy ... 'time is better spent doing something else! I'll make a cameo appearance that is all.'
This guy stopped cheerleading after the speech. He's done with the presentation just as it started LMAO.
This guy .. he must work in IT Service Desk because he's ready to run if something goes wrong and calls LMAO.
Finally this guy is like 'show me something real, something worth my time. You've got 30mins TM ... GO!'

They say a picture is worth a thousand words lol.

PS: Learning languages is NOT easy, especially when the reading, writing and speaking uses a completely different side of the brain than your native & first language. In no way am I making fun of T.M. Roh, however his speech advisor/trainer should have helped him nail down western/American idioms pronunciation daily for weeks/months prior to this event - I blame THAT person! That person should immediately be fired.

How can the ipads do this but not a smaller screen?

its not about the size

it’s the technology. Oled =/= LCD

even Samsung has only been able to do 120hz at 1080p, and they use their best displays every year on the high end notes. Apple gets their displays from Samsung, and they have their design. If they can’t solve their energy requirements, they will disable it even if the display itself could do it

they have their spec. Apple also isn’t the type of company to compromise, they’ll want 120hz at their full resolution
