Wow.. that is the death of Apple TV

Apple are killing good products, airport and now Apple TV...up next.. Mac Pro

When their products aren’t competitive because they overprice them they kill them. I think they rather sell them at premium prices or not sell them at all instead of pricing them competitively.

It's not at all, except for those who: (1) are getting a new Samsung TV that supports this, (2) is willing to use the Samsung TV interface to access their content, and (3) doesn't care about any of ATV's other advantages.

Separating services from hardware is a good thing. It's great for consumers because we can buy what we want and it's great for Apple because it gets its services in more users' hands and forces each of its component parts (services and hardware) to compete on its own merits.

I suspect Apple is positioning itself to use the Apple TV as a main distribution point for their shows and movies they'll be producing.

For my next TV, I will be buying a high quality Vizio(P, PQ series), use an ATV4K - and save $500-1000 by not buying a Samsung TV.

A few thoughts:

  1. This, along with Apple Music on Alexa devices indicated Apple TV and HomePod are overpriced and not selling as well as Apple would like. I suspect we’ll see a cheap Apple TV dongle this spring. And I think this reaffirms that Apple has no plans to sell its own TV set.
  2. Apple is transitioning from a premium product company to a services everywhere company. Perhaps it’s what they have to do but it sure as heck isn’t that exciting.
  3. No idea what this means for Siri. Apple Music on Echo devices isn’t using Siri. I’m going to assume the iTunes app on Samsung TVs won’t be either. Wither Siri just as they promoted the ML/AI chief to the executive team?

It only means that Apple wants more people to have access to their current and forthcoming streaming services. Apple doesn’t need or want to sell cheap dongles and devices at cost.

I think this makes a bit of sense. Since Apple will start making TV Shows, those will need to be available elsewhere. I think that they will be free on Apple devices but will be available to purchase/rent on other devices. That's why iTunes Movies will become available on those TVs, I even suspect that it will soon be available on Android.

To think how far ahead Apple was when it first launched the Apple TV... only to let that all slide to focus on iPhones.

What did Jobs mean when he said “they cracked it?” Or was he just blowing hot air? And did Apple have a chance to buy Netflix? (I suppose it probably still could if the price is right - they overspent on Beats so why not Netflix?)

Except there recently was a rumor they were thinking about it. If they want more people to access their services why wouldn’t they? Not everybody is in the market for a new tv and the Apple TV box is way overpriced.

Samsung’s tv software is decent (tizen), way better than android tv on my Sony TV

Interesting, I have the exact opposite experience, Plex works great on my sony 4k android tv ($800) which gets updates periodically, but slow/crashy on my 2015/2016 tizen samsung 3D TV which I paid $1500 which no longer gets updates.

While its good that people will have the option of loading iTunes on their Samsung TV’s, I’d personally much rather have an Apple TV that is more likely to receive updates than a TV that will likely only get them for 1 (or 2 tops) and then get abandoned.

This shouldn’t remind anyone at all of the time period when Apple allowed third parties to build Macs. Nope, move along. Nothing to see here, citizen. /s

In reality, by keeping devices devoted to services so expensive when compared to their competitors, they’ve put themselves in this situation. We’ll have to see if this moves over to other products. Routers are also no longer part of Apple’s line.

People should learn by now:

1. Never connect a Samsung TV to the internet. it is the first thing you should do after buying a Samsung tv and setting it up. Delete all apps, disconnect it from the network, and disable all analytics (it is hidden in their disclaimers...not a joke).

2. Buy an Apple TV.

Great.
Next up please: complete rewrite of iCloud.com with performance an functionality in mind, a webplayer for Apple Music and major update of iTunes and iCloud on Windows and I gladly throw iCloud and AppleMusic music money every month.

In Tim Cook’s letter to investors he said:
We can’t change macroeconomic conditions, but we are undertaking and accelerating other initiatives to improve our results.
My fear is there’s a bit of a panic at the company now and some bad decisions could be made in the fog of the panic. If Apple really is pivoting to a cross-platform service business I don’t see how they can do that and continue to be a premium hardware/products company. What’s the reason for buying Apple’s premium hardware? iMessage and maybe FaceTime? But there will be Wall Street pressure to make those services cross platform too.

I guess if this is where Apple needs to go then it has to go there but I don’t know of anyone at the company that can properly explain it. Sure Tim or Eddy will get up on stage and announce a TV service and explain what it is. But will they be able to explain why Apple is becoming a media company? Because Wall Street is on the “services” bandwagon now? Because hardware sales are slowing and Apple needs to extract more $$ from people that own existing hardware? Those aren’t very compelling reasons from a marketing standpoint. Interesting times ahead.

Really makes me wonder how much the Apple TV box matters in their vision for the future of TV. Maybe it will be all about Services.

Since I’ve bought an lg-oled tv I’ve no longer use for my Apple TV. Today’s modern tv-sets make the Appletv obsolete. There hasn’t been any compelling reason for me to keep the Appletv. Much of the services Apple is offering are USA only and I find the Appletv too restrictive. Other than that it’s a stagnant platform.

You couldn't pay me to use the built-in functionality of any "smart" tv over an AppleTV. They are far less functional, more difficult to use, and carry the same privacy issues as using a Google service. But if all you do is watch Netflix then I suppose some may find it acceptable.

A means of getting the upcoming TV content in front of non Apple TV owners I think. Needed to happen. I wonder if they will put it on Roku, Fire TV and Chromecast

They won’t do it because it cheapens their brand. The Apple TV isn’t “overpriced,” it’s exactly where they want it to be: at the top end of the market and offering a premium experience. Have you ever used these Samsung TVs? They’re horrendous. Brutally slow, terribly organized, constantly “updating” and “unavailable.” The Apple TV is just a joy to use.

So I guess not 2017 models then.
Yeah I guess not.

Too bad. AirPlay is basically the reason I keep a ATV around. I’ll probably buy a new TV this year anyways though. The PQ on my entry level 2017 Samsung TV just isn’t sitting well with me anymore.
