Samsung Unveils Galaxy S8 and S8+ With Iris and Facial Recognition, No Home Button

what is this fast wireless charging...

...is it true wire less...

...or a charging pad connected to a wire (like they currently have)

I'm tempted because my new Benz has a charging pad built into the console. Just toss it in and you are good to go. You can even connect to android auto. Must say - tempting - really, really tempting.

Ok, call me an Apple fanboy, but here are my thoughts.

First off, I don't like larger screened phones. I've been accustomed to a 4 inch iPod touch (and before that a 3.5" one) and lately I've been using an iPhone 6 as a secondary wifi device. What in the world do these companies think they're doing by releasing a (more than 2x) DPI on a phone that is higher than the eye can easily distinguish? The massive edge to edge screen makes me worried that I'd be accidentally hitting things on the screen all the time, whereas the minimal bezel on the iPhones/iPod touches are plenty good to keep your fingers off the screen while you're holding it (especially one handed). Personally, one handed use is very important to me, and the fact this phone is large, and the finger print scanner is on the back of the phone makes it impossible to use if the phone is set on a table, which is very common to do.

Lastly, why move the finger print scanner to the back, but then make a dedicated button for the voice assistant?

Sorry, I just had to laugh at some of these decisions, and I really hope Apple doesn't do any of these later this year, just because "that's what the people want".

Using another Android phone with 4GB and an equally high resolution screen it's fine. Faster than my previous iPhone 6+ by a large margin.

Recently fired up my old Samsung Galaxy S5 and it was faster than my iPhone 6+ in every day tasks. Given that the GS5 was OLDER than the iP6+ I don't know how people say it is faster. Maybe on benchmarks but not in use.
.
I guess YMMV. My iPhone 6 easily outran my Galaxy S6 in app launching, browser page rendering, and holding apps in memory before reloading on relaunch (which is pretty telling considering the S6 has 3 times the RAM of the 6).

It's going to take a lot to beat this phone if they don't price it correctly.

I don't think so. Take a look at the overall number of phones sold in 2016. The 6S (from 2015) beat out Galaxy sales. Apple has nothing to worry about. Either way, I'd prefer to make all the money from smartphones, opposed to volume.

LOL what?! This makes no sense. PEOPLE WANT IT, otherwise they jump ship.

Pretty cool device, if only Samsung would stop messing with the original Google Android software... I would even think about switching!

7.0 is quite good and better than iOS 10 in many areas.

It does look good. I'd buy one but I'm over super expensive phones. My $400 Axon 7 is a neat phone and has many of these features already.

Not from my experience. Apps take a while to load when in memory on Android phones and get purged quickly.

"Faster" is subjective. I can say my old iPhone 6 is faster than many Androids I've used. Specs wise and benchmark wise the iPhones always draw circles around Android. Look at YouTube vids comparing RAM and speed of phones. Though not 100% accurate they do show real world use and not just paper stats.

My Nexus was dropped after 3 years... Damn Goog. Wouldn't know about that

For about $750 or so you'd be a fool to buy it now. Better off with a cheap edge or something.

Lastly, why move the home button to the back, but then make a dedicated button for the voice assistant?

The only thing that moved to the back is the fingerprint sensor, not the home button (still on the front).

Time will tell if the phone becomes laggy like the S7 Edge. But for overall appearance it does look great.

My S7 came with 6.0.1, which I later updated to Samsung Nougat betas 3, 4 and 5, and then to the final release pushed out by T-Mobile. Everything is speedy and as fast as it was OOTB. I don't even do any type of general maintenance tasks either.

The home button is on the front, the fingerprint reader is on the back. Remember it can also be unlocked using your face or iris, making the day-to-day use of the fingerprint reader less important for most.

If the s8 starts at 750 than theres no reason why the rumored iphone8 should cost upward 1000 bucks.

Apple still prefers making money on their phone business. Margin will put it close to $1,000 on the high end. Maybe the 7s starts closer to $750?

Cupertino, start your copiers...

Or just release another fat bezel phone with no headphone jack in Sept. Or maybe a new color.

Love the design of the device. Honestly I think it's the best looking phone out so far. The screen seems to be brilliant with HDR and it just dominates the entire front which I like. Unfortunately the camera's and CPU/GPU don't seem to have been given much improvement from their marketing. Iris scanner is a nice touch. Their services like Bixby, S Pay, etc have always been underwhelming imo and so don't impress me.
So the best camera phone currently out there, I. E. The s7 has only marginally been improved lol, so it's even more the best camera phone. Brilliant..
Plus Bixby is brand new so how can it be underwhelming as previous?

Everyone loving this phone's design... I absolutely hate it, and not just to hate on Samsung... whom I admittedly can't stand. Both the rounded edges and the rounded corners of the screen are terrible choices on several levels. Once again, Samsung taking every rumor for the iPhone and smashing it in quickly just to beat Apple without ever asking "why are we doing this; what problem is this solving?"

Rounded edges = distortion and inadvertent touches
Rounded corners = wasted real estate, difficulty for developers, and awkward/inefficient screen layouts or cut-of content

Samsung phones = half-baked kitchen sink

You realise every presentation is scripted, right?

I do realise that, but today it was done very badly. For example, during the DEX introduction they were talking about an unifnished product presentation which was put in the folder named "DEX demo". It really doesn't take much effort to hide that.
