Yes, those damned copycats, hahahah. Meanwhile Android devices continue to gain market share over iOS. When Apple's share falls below some tipping point (10%?) the real fun begins.

This report is brought to you by the Inevitabillity & Obvious Dept. In all likelihood Apple’s Face ID 2.0 will be done by then. I’ll be curious to see what Face ID 2 looks like.

At the current rate of decline that won't happen until 2028, by which time smartphones will be more of a sunset category product anyway, replaced by various wearables.

Okay...I’ve seen a few people say Samsung would copy the notch in order to accommodate a Face ID type apparatus. Uh, why would they need to copy the notch when they have a top bezel in which to place such equipment? o_O

IF they do end up using a notch, it likely would be to fall in line with Google now making the next version of Android optimized for a notched design. That falls on Google for moving the Android side over to notchtopia.

I’m hoping Samsung will ignore that and continue to do their own thing, as they have by keeping removable storage options and headphone ports.

There are android manufacturers blatantly copying Apple and it IS annoying and embarrassing for those of us who also like Android phones. But Samsung isn’t copying as brashly as it has in the not-too-distant past, at least not for their flagship phones. They found a groove and have stuck to it since the S7 Edge design debuted, refining their form factor continually since then, much to the chagrin of some who want the phones to look completely different somehow.

iPhone X’s Face ID was good. I enjoyed using it and it managed to not feel like a first generation experiment to me. But it’s not ideal in all situations, just as fingerprint scanning is not ideal in all situations. So it would be great if Apple would consider offering both options again if they can figure out a way to make all the necessary pieces fit.

I don't know why Samsung feels compelled to copy every move that Apple makes. Back in the day -- yeah, sure. They didn't have a unique selling point, but offering a cheaper iPhone clone guaranteed sales.

Fast-forward to today. Samsung has been leading Apple in hardware design for YEARS -- it was only last year that Apple finally caught up with the iPhone X. Samsung has also been trimming down their *cough* awful *cough* TouchWiz skin (or whatever it's called now). They make a terrific phone. They are no longer in the position to where they have to copy Apple, as the Galaxy S line can entirely stand on it's on. But, they do. Why??

It's not a race for Apple. That's why Apple is so successful.

The vocal minority on Macrumors are in no way an accurate representation of the demographic of iPhone users.

Half the people on here don't even own an iPhone.
Judging solely by what people write here im not convinced that even half have iPhones.

No worries, and not surprising as there are 24,000 devices manufactured by more than 1,300 companies using Android (as of 2015). The majority being low-cost devices.

Tipping point? Really...

From what I can tell, Android did have the face recognition first. Apple do what Apple normally do is to improve on that existing technology and make it better. Now Android has to compete by also refining its face recognition. It makes sense. Technology keep getting better this way for everyone. This video explains a lot:

Market share in this case is a useless metric.

Apple’s smaller market share still works out to a very huge number of users in an absolute sense. More than enough to sustain its own thriving ecosystem.

I think you will find that Android’s larger market share doesn’t quite amount to any meaningful advantages over ios.

Who cares? The iPhone was, is and always will be the benchmark for all of the "smartphones" out there!

Uh oh! What about the fingerprint sensor that almost everyone will die if it's removed?!

Will they have both fingerprint sensor and facial rec? That seems like a very expensive phone to make, having both tech at the same time.

I thought Samsung did what customers asked? Does this mean that their fandroids are asking for a FaceID imitation?

Sounds like samsung is all avout quantity over quality.

This has been clear since the S3 where their iPhone mocking "It doesn't take a genius" ad just reeled off a list of features.

I've always compared Galaxy to those 500-in-one electric kits you see. Yeah it might have 500 features but only 7 of them work well enough to bother using them.

Why would I care for this? We’re seriously hyping up a 1-year-away Samsung phone on Macrumors first page? Wanna call it Samsungrumors.com?

I do not give a damn about Samsung phones or any other generic Android vendor. You wanna make it a footnote because (again) they are copying Apple, fine, just like for all the new notch phones. More than that is ridiculous.

If you don't care then don't click and definitely don't comment.

Well if you're so blinded that you overlook the fact that Samsung supply Apple components then I guess you could live in a warped world where "They are built on copying others ideas".

You know saying "I'm not talking about components" doesn't mean they cease to exist.

Not blinded at all, just don't see OLED or wireless charging as innovation. For Apple or Samsung. Samsung wouldn't be relevant at all in the smart phone space without Apple. Apple could however, bypass Samsung.

I’m an iPhone enthusiast as well, but this technology if rivaled by Samsung matters, and saying “Who cares” makes it seem like competition is not necessary, when in fact it is. I’m actually hoping Samsung does release their own version of Face ID, so it can demonstrate where biometric security is leading. Samsung and Apple are the two major smart phone competitors, facial recognition for smart phones is still highly evolving technology and its all relevant for competition to the consumer.

I dont want IR rays freaking out on my face ! Enough of FaceID! I watched a video on FaceID, IR blaster sort of spraying like anything even if you don't look at the phone! I am not sure about the life of this IR blaster!

I love these rumors/stories posted on an Apple-centric site, designed to cash in on frothy-mouth fanboism.

(hey, it works so why not)

If you don't want IR forced upon your face with Apple's way you have other options out there. For example, Samsung gives you the options of using secure iris scanning, fingerprint or face unlock for convenience. That's the beauty of competition.

Samsung knows it needs some secure Face ID type technology to be able to authenticate financial transactions and android pay. Apple will have leapfrogged Samsung again for about 2 years, but it will be said how much Apple ripped off from Samsung.
