How could anyone argue about being given the option of a headphone jack? It's thrown in, and the price of the 10e is still on par with the XR. How embarrassing for anyone to knock the option when it's a bonus. Sour grapes? It's not like Bluetooth becomes unavailable. Your option to use Bluetooth earbuds is still there. Seriously, am I missing something?

Apple knows what's best for you. Spending $159 for AirPods is better than suffering the inconvenient dongle life.

Or you could get a phone which does have a headphone jack.

Apple’s made their move. Ball’s in your court now. At some point, you are going to have to draw your line in the sand, because Apple is unlikely to reverse their decision on this.

Or as I like to tell my students - you can’t choose your consequences, but you can choose your actions.

When I upgraded to the 8+ in October it was the first iPhone I’ve owned without the jack. I used the crappy supplied dongle for a bit but had a couple of occasions where I didn’t have it with me. I decided to remove all my iTunes music from my phone and just felt that maybe it’s a feature I can live without going forward. I freed up a load of storage space in the process too.

Wow that’s a drastic measure. Did you not really use your phone much for music.

Drastic but ballsy move. Personally, I didn’t have any iTunes content until Apple Music became a thing. So in that regard, what Apple was really selling me was convenience, not so much music.

Listened a bit here and there, then the Airpods got released, used it with my 6S+, and haven’t touched my previous headphones ever since.

The critics are going to say that having a headphone jack doesn’t present me from using wireless headphones, and while that is true, it also shows a fundamental misunderstanding as to why Apple does things the way they do.

Apple removed the headphone jack not to profit from the sales of adaptors and wireless headphones, but to control the narrative. They are moving towards a wireless world. There will be no place for wired headphones in an age of wearables, and Apple would rather navigate this transition in the driver’s seat.

At least that’s how I see it.

Did you listen to music on CDs before Apple Music?

I have a 30 GB collection of MP3. Some bought from iTunes and other digital stores and some ripped from my own CD collection.

I did not subscribe to Apple Music until the HomePod came out. After which I gave away my entire CD collection to charity and gave my stereo to a friend. My CDs were taking up too much space and I hadn’t used the stereo for years. I have 2 small children who liked to pull out the CDs when they got the chance.

I wasn’t a music person before. Sure, I would tune in to the radio now and then, but I didn’t really have a habit of listening to music. Didn’t even bother trying to torrent or burn the tracks.

Tried Spotify for a while, then quit as I couldn’t find anything to listen to (while forgetting to cancel my subscription for a while).

Was mostly a podcast person, then Apple Music came out. Tried it thanks to the free trial, found the Asian music that I liked (eg: AoA), and have stuck with it ever since. That there is an option to pay $99 for a year just sweetened the deal a little more. That also means I have no “iTunes baggage”, if that’s a thing. Basically, I have no purchased songs (except for that U2 album) or media content. It’s purely streaming for me.

I would say I am currently at 60% podcast / 40% Apple music right now. Hence my interest in the Soor app.

Guess you could call me a bit of a late bloomer there.

Yes you are, the option to use Bluetooth is there, the option to use wired is not. Apple could keep wired AND bluetooth AND their own headphones. But they choose not to

Sound quality is no where close to wired headphones.

Their decision to ignore windows phone is 1 of the biggest reasons for its demise, they're doing it to Amazon echo show by ignoring it with YouTube app and it's hurting. Google can (if they so choose) use 1 of disputes with Apple to pull off all their apps and services (Gmail, YouTube, maps, search) from iOS devices and if that happens how many would choose iOS? Great majority of Apple costumers are not professionals or Apple diehard fans who spend their time here, but a regular folks who choose Apple cuz it's a trendy company. Google knows how to play dirty and currently they are paying Apple but that can change over night.

Never said it was. If you have been following my recent comments, then you will know why I have settled on my Airpods over all my other headphones as pictured below.

I used to listen to music quite a bit through my phone but don’t seem to do it so often now. I do have amazon music and have the option but I did have about 10GB of music in iTunes and it didn’t make sense to have it for occasional use. The loss of the headphone jack has made things slightly more difficult as I only have one adapter. I don’t really trust Bluetooth earphones yet and if I can limit the amount of frequencies going to my head, the better. Most of my calls are on loudspeaker or if I plan a long call I use the headphones with the adapter etc.

Nah man, most people who use AirPods think they’re levitating above the rest of us. They are just too sophisticated to use wired headphones. Thusly they have no use for the jack therefore the rest of us plebeians should buy trash Bluetooth headphones to replace our Shure 535’s with.
A little pot/kettle huh? You are accusing those of us who enjoy the convenience of AirPods of being elitist while sounding like an elitist with that comment abut your sophisticated Shure 535s. You do realize audiophile types who are too sophisticated for us AirPods users and must have their ultra high end wired headphones make up less than 0.1% of the market. It’s a good thing Apple doesn’t make decisions based on such a large percent of their customer base...

Only if you have wired headphones. Which many of us don't any longer as it's 2019.
There’s still quite a lot of people out there with wired headphones. I see them on my commute to work. The only wired headphones I have are the lightning ones that came in the box with my iPhone 7, X and Xs max but I always use my AirPods. However I think it’s always better to have options.

This is probably why I sit in an office full of young people on good money but are using older iPhones lol. I’ve observed a general disinterest in smartphones over the past few years now and as prices are rising and less is being brought to the market, people are content using devices until they break.

Samsung are showing Apple up with slightly lower prices and impressive innovation and have been for a few years now. They might not be dominating but they are demonstrating that Apple are offering less and less each year and charging a premium for features that have been industry standard for some time. As an iPhone user it would be nice to actually be excited to see Apple bringing something to the table that is worthy of not having our pants pulled down over.

Completely agreed. I work in an office where we're all well off enough to buy whichever phone we want, we've got people on 4S, SE (me), 6 and a few 7's. The newer Apple phones just don't offer particular value for money, taking away features rather than adding, increasing size which none of us want.

So with that said I've now ordered my Samsung S10e, £500 and the Qualcomm version for better performance/battery life. I've been with Apple phones since 2007 but they don't have anything I want any more, a smaller phone in the X format would have swayed me but they don't seem to be interested.

It'll be a hard switch I'm sure, one thing I'm looking forward to - drag and drop file management, what a relief to get away from iTunes! :D

The point is wireless headphones were still an option when the jack was there. Wireless cannot supersede wired until it surpasses it in all respects. The AirPods battery will also continue to degrade until it can’t a hold a charge for more than an hour. Until all the flaws with it are fixed the jack should stay.

Also with wired headphones you don’t have to worry about losing them. I also have the AirPods and I am nervous about carrying them whenever there is a crowd around.

That's why I say Apple's decision to do away with the headphone jack goes beyond simply skimping on component costs or selling more accessories. It's a philosophical move driven by their vision of how they desire users to interact with their devices. It may seem irrational from a purely technological perspective (I agree that you can still use wireless headphones on a phone with a headphone jack), but then again, Apple isn't a technology company but a design-led one, and so moves like this cannot be accurately evaluated using conventional tech logic.

It feels like I stepped out of my wayback machine. This thread sounds like those when Apple released the iPhone 5 and 6, and others had larger screens. Apple is doomed, the Samsung Galaxy whatever, and/or the Moto Blah is sooo much better in terms of specs, and size, and features. If Apple doesn't do x or y, people will be leaving in droves!

Fast forward to now, and it's the same tired old arguments. At the end of the day, it's a phone. People buy what they want, and use what they like. The same is true for cars, shoes, etc. I've yet to walk around and see folks snickering at someone else because of the phone they're using, or the headphones/earbuds they have on.

Yeah it's so overblown and the arguments against using an iPhone in this thread are so far off base because at the end of the day, those of us who choose to continue to use iPhones do so for our own reasons, but somehow those reasons aren’t good enough for the anti-iPhone commenters.

My wife uses her EarPods with her iPhone 7.
