Not this tired argument again...yes I'm aware that having 300 phones given away for cheap increases marketshare.

Funny how iPhone sales don't mean quality, but Android sales do?

It is a pretty tried argument. Apple makes 73% profit, followed by Samsung at 26% profit and the rest making the remaining 1%. It really is a race to the bottom with Android phones.

Its called choice/price point aka tier marketing. Google wants to make sure all levels of income can afford a phone. whats wrong with that?? Do go to a car dealership and always purchase the top car? Dont think so.

Yeah it doesn't make sense how some will say iPhone sales don't matter because of Android marketshare when Android marketshare is predicated on sales! Paradoxical oxymoron much?

Keep drinking iSheep keep drinking.....

Let me see if I've got this iCrap straight.
If Apple didn't invent it....it doesn't exist
If another company has it...they copied it from Apple...but it is always inferior
Competition to Apple should just be squashed so that we can let Apple come up with all of the innovation we could ever need....because they know what we need and what's best for us.
There....I think I've got it now.
It's amazing how this iKoolAid makes everything so clear now

It is a matter of ethics and code of conduct. Samsung was contracted to build and supply components for the iPhone. Their first iteration had the same form factor icons and user interface. I am all for competition, if based on their own merits. However, they were paid to deliver a product, but photocopied the product.

I know the UI was Android and not a product of Samsung, but it should have raised a flag somewhere in their organization.

Now Samsung has all the time in the world to redevelop the television to include a la carte channels, internet connectivity, remote access to your media. Instead they are trying to create a me-to product. In the meantime, Apple is developing new technologies to eat their lunch in the TV category. I'll take an educated guess that the first Samsung TV product following a major Apple release will be very similar.

Your Kool-Aid seems to be that you don't acknowledge when something is almost a blatant copy, all the way down to the name. That's what most of us in here are paying attention to. I don't care if they improve the hardware for the same phone 3-4 times per year to keep their sales decent. I have issues with what I posted earlier and this: http://www.tuaw.com/2011/09/28/no-comment-proof-that-samsung-shamelessly-copies-apple/ Or I have issues with companies that change a product release date they previously set until after Apple holds the WWDC/Macworld/Any other Apple event. Tell me that they don't look at Apple as a target to compete against and therefore mimic the features and I'll back off.

I think Apple copied Samsung on this one. If you follow Apple's patent logic then Samsung owns the rights to the letter 'S' so therefore Apple in using the name Siri is in patent violation......it's straight logic.

I have no problem with choice. That's what makes Android great. But let's not act like iPhone sales are irrelevant because of android marketshare.

People have the choice to buy any phone they want. They pick the 4s, the 4 and the 3gs more then any other phone that exists. It's not like they don't have the choice to just stop buying iPhones...

If the iPhone is so incremental, that would open up the door for competition to beat Apple, no?
Hasn't it? Still the reality distortion field (which is now more vacant than ever) means 8% market share, 70% profits.
So phones like the HTC One X are crap too because HTC doesn't make it's own displays? You know who makes Samsung products? China. That's where all the rare earth metals from
No the technology for samsungs diplays is samsungs, they got so much technology that they can afford to sell one type of screen tech to app, high res lcd, and have another for them oled.

So what if Apple didn't make all the apps in the Apps Store? Apple is responsible for providing an SDK that works and a stable ecosystem where developers can have an equal chance to make an app with low overhead costs. Also, providing a smooth OS that people like to use increases the market developers can sell their apps to. It's not like Samsung made their own operating system.
Blackberry does, nokia had a pretty good os but struggled because it couldn't have flash and cpu prices dirt cheap like apple what with it's clout, palm did (and arguably an os superior to ios in quite a few respects) but couldn't face the apple gargantuan monster and went under, and google does. As for the app store, you didn't even get the point. They are providing minor incremental updates to their devices for two years, with tech from other people, they are just putting it together and branding it, devs do so much hard work and sell their devices via their innovation and most (ask any dev and they ll tell you) barely go by while apple touts how much they 've paid them.

And when it comes time to celebrate the gazilionth download, and while you are turning a 50 billion yearly profit, you can't afford to spread around a million (1/50,000 of your profits) to curate a few apps in the app store, to actually give something back to the people who by their efforts they 've put food on the table (each on of them paying you $100 to run your store btw) and made you uber mega filthy rich, but issuing a lottery check of 7,000 (minus their 30% cut)...yeah I would that shows ultra low class...

Progress happens in increments. You would rather they gather up all their 'incremental' upgrades and roll it up as one update in 2014 just so you can call it revolutionary?
Keeping the same phone with a minor fix for the bs you did so it doesn't drop signals anymore, keeping the same design in portables but just fixing the failed latch you had in it, keeping the same design imac without fixing so far the untreated glass (even crts had treated glass) or the poor ergonomics you have for 8 years (the g3 was the last great ergonomics imac), and sticking a high res screen and a couple of cameras on the same design for the ipad, that's not merely incremental upgrades that's the definition of stagnation...

( issuing a much touted buggy and bloated desktop os, all that in two years, offering a cloud service that is inferior to the competition (and in the process disallowing it from use from your previous os that had a version of it that people were paying you for but can't use anymore unless they pay you even more to get the os update), bloating itunes with more and more to make an almost unmanageable sync interface that boggles the mind of most average users...)

You are trying too hard.
Not at all, apple have made it very easy for me. And anyway you missed most of what I 've said. I don't expect you to agree btw, we're posting opinions here, some are more factually based, some have more insight than others, maybe I 've gotten it wrong. I wouldn't think so, but anyway I 'm not trying to convince anyone, whoever gets it gets it, sometimes you get something when the time is ripe, other's never get it.

You know - I was worried about phone/screen size when I chose the Skyrocket. It's 4.5. Everyone kept saying how huge it was. That they couldn't operate it one handed. That's crap - and I don't even have huge hands. I can definitely operate it one handed. And further - when I use my iPhone 4 now - it's like I can barely read the screen. The text/icons are tiny. The iPhone is still a damn good phone. That doesn't prevent any other phone from ALSO being a damn good phone.

PS. this isn't me being defensive about the phone I have. I have both. It's just a taste of reality for those so certain that only Apple devices can POSSIBLY be the right size.

Why was this put on the front page? I am OS agnostic. I have an iPhone 4s, I bought my girlfriend last year an HTC Amaze and I run several computers on Win7 and no Mac OS X boxes. I state this merely to show that I have no biases in what I use or suggest. If I were a cynic, I would suggest this was to merely generate page hits. However, I am not like that.

Then why is Google insisting that oems update their devices in a timely manner (even though that doesn't help).

Don't act like Google just releases Android and doesn't care that only 4 percent of users have ics...like that was their intention...

Lol, rims wake up thing has been blasted by everyone, including android blogs as pathetic. Strange that you thought it was so great...

Did you learn to read and interpret differently then everybody else?
Where did I post that I thought it was so great? 'Wake Up' simply implies that one needs to wake up from the slumber or trance they are in.

Hasn't it? Still the reality distortion field (which is now more vacant than ever) means 8% market share, 70% profits.

Yet you ignore your own reality distortion field. Hint: Htc, Motorola, Samsung, and whatever other two bit Android oemd out there don't profit share. In other words, apples "competition" is not all those companies combined. Those companies are competing with each other too.

So no, no one has beaten Apple, unless of course you think the ceos of those three call each other and give each other high fives cuz Android did better then Apple...and split their profits between each other.

You don't think that, do ya?

What choice would that be, 300 different devices designed to get ahold of my information for Google. I don't consider that a good choice. Google appologists are good for Google business.

That is one fugly-ass phone.

Not really. Looks like a white iPhone with a large screen. If the bigness bothers you, that's one thing, but it looks alright to me. I can't wait for the iPhone to have a larger screen, honestly.

Meh

I like SOME of the new specs. I even think I could get motivated to buy it so I could save on my Dropbox account since users get 50gb of storage when the purchase the phone. I just simply could not stand sitting through more than 20 minutes of the stupid announcement. God, there is no substitute for Apple events. They all looked like a bunch of hacks and so did their ads. I'm holding out for the next iPhone, but if it fails to impress, Sammie does have my phone attention for now.

Competition is good. It pushes competitors to achieve their very best, each going the extra mile to pip the other to the post.

However, I don't think this is competition. It's plagiarism. Samsung aren't bringing anything new to the table, they are just copying everything that Apple does.

Add to that their constant mockery of Apple users in their advertising and the result is that rather than admiring a worthy adversary, I just hate them for being unimaginative, insulting and cheap.

This has real-Workd effects : when shopping for a new TV recently, I actively avoided any Samsung products. They might make the best TVs on the planet for all I know, but I'll still never buy one. Why should I? Apparently, Samsung think that I am an idiot.

Fair enough I say, but this idiot will never buy a Samsung product.
Well Done!

Not really. Basically the same look and feel. At least with Android you get choice and can always expect something different from any of the many phone manufacturer's. I would probably bought a Iphone a few years ago but the size was too small for me at that time. Now for sure I wouldnt get one because too many have them and they all look the same. scary.

I am a cynic and I am certain this news items was posted to generate hits. And it has. A job well done by the editors.

Let's see...

iPhone 4S compared to Galaxy SIII:

half RAM
half CPU cores
half CPU clock speed
half storage memory
no NFC
much smaller screen resolution
no LTE

Yea, you've got half Galaxy SIII

Get real though. Who needs a netbook in their pocket? Seriously 1.4Ghz quad? thats better then most netbooks. And yet a lot of android apps won't work on it. Tap Tap worked on none of my android devices (3 different tablets Vizio, Archos, and Acer). And some apps ran horribly slow on the Archos 101 G9 (returned after 2 defective). Now with the iPad and iPhone every app runs smoothly. You don't need high performance to run these games and apps. Its like saying you need a gaming computer to play AOE 3. It's pathetic how they advertise these things. An iPhone 4 and 4s and iPad 2-3 will run everything smoothly that is built for the device. Where as android apps need more picture sizes for screens and compatibility for all the different processors used.

If you love android so much then go out and get one but you won't be happy when you can't play a $10 or amazing game or your amazing phone or you can't play your movie collection and you are forced to find 60 different video apps to find out only 3 work and 1 is laggy. Have fun I'll stick to my iPad 3 and iPhone 4s.

I could care less about the annoucement of a device. The final product that is important to me an others. Getting annoyed by a event is irrelevant to me when it comes to just a simple device like a smartphone. Me purchasing a product from a company has nothing to do with their annoucements

You missed the part where it is for 2 years. Then you pay or loose your space.
