You said one feature that Safari on iOS didn't copy, and I said smooth scrolling. It took all those other phones until recently to get that somewhat right. Even Netscape on Windows has smooth scrolling if your PC was fast enough and you had a mouse with a scroll wheel. You probably didn't understand that correctly: I meant something like

Whereas iPhone OS 2.0 on an iPhone 3G was perfectly smooth already.

And I'd be interested in that iPhone that runs 10.2 Panther (that would be iPhone OS 0.x if you calc it out), you have access to Apples lab?

Safari on the mac...jesus... Apple's ripped 7 features off the top of my head in safari on the mac... Opera had smooth scrolling a year before them... The point was that when they can't bring anything to the table they blatantly steal and appropriate other people's ideas, safari on the mac is full of them, but as soon as they have a few slightly different ideas themselves (ios) they patent the **** out of them, sue everyone that even barely touches upon them, and proclaim themselves innovators and the rest copycats... Just read man...:(

Psst. Dude. Come here...

buy ovaltine

;)

Ovaltine did you say? In small font? I bet *YOU* sir are on the payroll of UK conglomerate AB Foods (ABF LN, Market capitalisation £10bn) trying to influence consumer behaviour away from Horlicks, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK LN, Market capitalisation £73bn). Shame on you

Seven things Apple Safari ripped off from previous browsers:

  1. The address bar
  2. The back button
  3. The forward button
  4. The browsing history
  5. The reload button
  6. HTML
  7. Bookmarks

Something like that?

This phone looks so good, I imagine Apple engineers will rush to buy one to "borrow" all its cool new features. Another game changer from Samsung.

The point was that when they can't bring anything to the table they blatantly steal and appropriate other people's ideas

This cuts both ways (I am not a fan of Apple's overzealous patent disputes), but perhaps it's not stealing per se. The consumer electronics industry, just like any consumer industry, takes its lead from what it expects the consumer to like to influence R&D. Is it too much to think that two R&D strategists, one sitting in Cupertino, the other in Boston (or wherever, Korea even) come up with the same vision of the future whims of consumers? It's simply that apple make their products better, faster. It's easy to come up with new concepts. It's hard to make them work WELL. All the time.

The idea that Apple has some massive patent portfolio is an FB invention. Not only is it small, it's composed primarily of unenforceable craptents.

You don't understand patents I see.

The patent infringement discussed presently deals with patents granted before the iphone original was released.

The quality, depth and breath of patents issued to Apple post 2007 is at a supreme high bar.

2012 to date Apple has been granted 369 patents.
2012 to date Apple has published 335 patent applications.

In 2011, Apple was granted 676 patents.

After 4 months they have already have achieved 54.6% of their 2011 mark.

In 2010, Apple was granted 563 patents.

After 4 months they have already achieved 65.5% of their 2010 mark.

In 2009, Apple was granted 289 patents.

After 4 months they have already achieved 127.7% of their 2009 mark.

Apple should reach around 1100+ patents for 2012.

Apple received 103 patents in 2008.

So the years following the release of the original iPhone Apple has seen:

103, 289, 563, 676, 369* = 2000 and counting.

If you think those are not going to be defendable and are nothing but fluff, then think again.

Apple tends to develop, file and receive patents on products they actually make.

IBM is infamous for filing tens of thousands of patents on research they never end up producing in the form of products.

Since Steve discussed nearly 300 patents for the original iPhone Apple will have patented more than 9 times that number in a mere 5 years.

I'm a fan of Samsung products. I bought an SGS2 to replace my iPhone4. I like the SGS2, it's excellent. I'll go as far as to say that it is the best phone I've ever had.

I'm NOT impressed by the SGS3. Again with the Pentile *****creen (I've played with t, I don't like it). Quad core is hardly useful. At least, for me. I don't game so it's useless, for me at least. It's also probably useless for most other users that don't play games. It will not speed up the core system too much, at least nothing that a custom kernel and optimized ICS will do.

I don't think this phone will be a threat for Apple. It will sell well, very well if anything, but personally, I'm not impressed.

A barometer? Whatever. It's probably in there to just say the had it before Apple. (then again when Apple will introduce it, the sheep will hail it as the greatest innovation there is).

Actually, your opinion is what I see in other Android dedicated forums. Many vivid Samsung fans are disappointed with it. I'm quite surprised that in MacRumors it receives so much applause.

Of course, it's a Samsung phone. ;)

BTW, 9to5Mac reported that during the demo of the Siri knockoff, the phone was asked for the news, and it displayed the weather! Can anyone confirm?

What does that even mean? It's 50/50 whether Siri understands me. She's only gotten good at me telling her to set alarms.

Your argument was: It has a different background for the bubbles, hence it's a complete different thing. No?

But while we're at 'Things ripped off from Apple' and Panther, let's just add another one:

The frequently imitated but never equalled brushed metal.

Wait a second. Are you saying that brushed metal is an Apple innovation? What next? Someone makes a leatherbound schedule book, and you'll say they're ripping off iCal?

HOLY CRAP! What the hell is happening here today? It's like someone opened the gate on crazy or something?

It's just a rehearsal thread for the massive applause when the next incremental iPhone update is introduced.

Remember how people still try to sell Siri and the faster proc as main incentive to get an iPhone 4S instead of a 4.

Now prepare yourself for the upcoming "iPhone5 is the best since sliced bread"-threads when it's introduced.

On topic: I'm not that impressed. HTC and Sony will make a fortune in the quad-core generation as their phones clearly are better designed. Currently I'd rather vote for a HTC One X instead of a Galaxy S3.

But as a matter of fact they both set the minimum of what an iPhone5 has to offer.

You have to speak very clearly. When I'm tired and mumble into my phone Siri just doesn't work, lol. :(

oh jeez.. are you sayin Apple invented the store to buy apps now? Are you ****** serious? Please.. let's not lower ourselves to fanboi level..

But I don't like the design of the new galaxy at all.. too much plastic and not enough innovation. I think the HTC One X is much better looking. Truly hoped Samsung would innovate and make Apple scared.

Actually that's just it.. I don't think Apple has been scared in a while to really push for hardcore innovation in most of their products. Think about the designs of mac notebooks, tablets and phones. Almost all of the designs are at least 2 years old. Let's hope someone out there bring something unique looking (or feel wise) to the table and make Apple go back to the drawing board saying "oh crap.. we better up the game".

Like someone said earlier.. Competition is a good thing!

And Samsung stores too, I wonder where they got that idea from?

To be honest, I'm okay with the pentile displays. I think you have a problem with it due to the 800x480 lower resolution where the pentile display's flaws are more noticeable.

I have both galaxy nexus and iphone 4s. I'll tell you that anytime where I'm reading websites or watching video, I MUCH prefer the galaxy nexus just because it's crisp AND easier to look at. At 720p & 4.6-5.3 inches (I often borrow my buddy's Galaxy Note), I really can't see the problems of Pentile displays and I have tried very hard to notice them. I can see them quite easily w/ the other mid range samsung galaxy pentile displays however (since they are 800x480).

Added benefit of the Super AMOLED display is that under sun light, it's VERY readable at only half the brightness. I often have to boost iphone to near max to read it clearly in comparison.

But this all plastic body doesn't shatter when you drop it. I know some people do and some don't but plastic is more durable than glass..

Maybe it's just me but I've always wanted to see a crash test where, say the Samsung SGIII and iPhone 4S are launched from opposite directions and made to crash into each other at high speed. I'd wager the 4S would obliterate the plastic monster and come out with nary a scratch.

Steel and glass FTW - plastic scratches. Of course with Samsung it doesn't matter if your phone is all scratched up after a few months as they'll already be releasing the next flagship model....

It's surprising Samsung has not yet copied the glass/steel construction on the iPhone. On the other hand, at the size of the SGIII glass/steel would probably weigh 200+ grams.

Typical "iphone killer"... promises of bigger numbers in every area (until the next iPhone's released) but it's still trying to be an iPhone. Notice how the iPhone has always been an iPhone... not a _____ killer?

Crazy thing is this one's popular and it's about the same price as an iPhone!! Despite it's RRP and stats being pretty well identical to the iPhone (and it outselling the iPhone most likely) I doubt Samsung will make as much money as Apple. This one's just gonna eat into the HTC/RIM market even further.

Agree except there is absolutely no way this will "outsell" the iPhone. Samsung makes like 50 models, and that's how they rack up big numbers. A lot of these are cheap sub-$200 without subsidy devices (which are fantastic value, BTW).

Last quarter in the USA the iPhone outsold all other smart phones combined. World-wide all Android models together outsold the iPhone. But no single model did, not even close.

Personally I think a phone that costs as much as an iPhone will have a hard time in any market. Most Samsung flagship models are cheaper. The G Nexus, the Note, the SGSII, are all cheaper than the 4S.

Some of the things Samsung launched today:

  • S Voice
  • S Cloud
  • Scan and Match
  • Display sharing
  • S Pebble
  • Retail stores

In other news, Apple has had these for awhile:

  • Siri
  • iCloud
  • iTunes Match
  • AirPlay
  • iPod Shuffle
  • Retail stores

Are you high? Android has been using voice actions for years before Siri came along. Not to mention cloud services have been used with Android since 2008. Everything else I do give it up to Apple. I'm not a fan boy of either OS, but look at the facts before you start posting.

Apple's mortal enemy has launched their next flagship product and you are asking us to look at facts? Com'on!

A bit too big for me, but a great looking phone... A few ideas nicked from iPhone, but you would expect that... I just hope Apple can raise the bar again for the iPhone 5, the 4S was just a fairly boring upgrade, they need to raise the bar again... And i'm still waiting for something good to happen post-steve... So far all we've seen is fairly uninspiring upgrades, i wanna be impressed again.

You have to speak very clearly. When I'm tired and mumble into my phone Siri just doesn't work, lol. :(

I do speak very clearly, first I speak normally to her, she fails, then I'll speak loudly, slowly and clearly. At this point she'll just mistake it for something else.

Samsung focusing on software enhancements is far more of a threat to the iPhone than the hardware upgrades.

If Samsung get it right, it could threaten iOS, if they get it wrong it equates to bloatware.

Either way though, I prefer the Experia S :p

Actually, might be an interesting experiment. If we can get the speed of the collision up high enough we might be able to catch sight of that hypothetical particle the 'Jobs Buyone' that is part of the fundamental structure of Apple products.

FFS Apple grow a pair and sack this shower of **** company off. Samsung aren't the only company that make parts for your products.

Steve Jobs would be absolutely livid with this.

Well yes because Steve Jobs is a control freak and scared of competition. This phone is incredible.

Man, that is huge. One needs to order trousers with bigger pockets. Does a phone need to be that big? What happened to the old days when I had a Nokia 82xx and it was tiny and functional.
