You don't understand patents I see.

The patent infringement discussed presently deals with patents granted before the iphone original was released.

The quality, depth and breath of patents issued to Apple post 2007 is at a supreme high bar.

2012 to date Apple has been granted 369 patents.
2012 to date Apple has published 335 patent applications.

In 2011, Apple was granted 676 patents.

After 4 months they have already have achieved 54.6% of their 2011 mark.

In 2010, Apple was granted 563 patents.

After 4 months they have already achieved 65.5% of their 2010 mark.

In 2009, Apple was granted 289 patents.

After 4 months they have already achieved 127.7% of their 2009 mark.

Apple should reach around 1100+ patents for 2012.

Apple received 103 patents in 2008.

So the years following the release of the original iPhone Apple has seen:

103, 289, 563, 676, 369* = 2000 and counting.

If you think those are not going to be defendable and are nothing but fluff, then think again.

Apple tends to develop, file and receive patents on products they actually make.

IBM is infamous for filing tens of thousands of patents on research they never end up producing in the form of products.

Since Steve discussed nearly 300 patents for the original iPhone Apple will have patented more than 9 times that number in a mere 5 years.

I will prob buy it when it comes out i think the features are great, after 4 years of ios im getting kinda bored of the ui, i will prob go back to apple as I do realise the build quality and looks are better on the iphone than anything out there. but i just need a break from ios. You will never get a balanced thread about an android phone on here, yes i will get down voted, yes their voice control looks identical to siri, yes after 6 months i will prob wish i had my iphone but for now i soooo bored of the ios ui. atleast android is making major improvements. Please apple make major changes to ios :)

I never understand people who say they are bored wih the ui. This is simply the mechanism used to interface with the important stuff. It should never be changed for the sake of change. The ui works well to allow us to accesse the amazing apps which is what I spend my time doing. I never find myself just using the ui for the sake of using the ui. It is a tool. It would be like saying you are bored of your desk at work. That has almost no impact on your ability to utilize the phone especially given what a solid ui they started with and build upon.

I am saying the idea that a ui is anything but boring makes no sense. It is an interface mechanism that should be simple and intuitive not a thrill ride.

Are they going to merge a phone and tablet to one device? OMG for what I would need 4+ inches display on the phone? Samsung - bigger != better.

That is what is funny. Apple likely spent massive amounts of research on screen size when they revolutionized smartphones and created the touchscreen smartphone industry. There was no technical reason why apple could not have made the original iPhone screen 3.7", 4", 4.5", 5" or anything else. They chose 3.5" because of massive research. All the iPhone clones originally copied apple with none of their own research. As they completely failed to compete they let their marketing departments design their phones and add bigger and bigger screens with no real research or support in usability for their random size. It is all very silly.

So you're saying that if/when the next iPhone gets a larger screen, it'll be because it took them 5 years of research to realize that people should be offered a larger screen?

The GS3's design actually looks quite nice but I think the screen might be too big. The 90-degree screen edges conflict terribly with the smooth, curvy lines of the phone. Nitpicking of course.

The biggest issue I have with this device is the horrible decision to use a pentile screen! I don't care what people say I can see the darn space between the pixels very clearly. Why Samsung, why?

No sale! Waiting for 5.2" model next year.

They already have merged a phone and tablet. It's called the Galaxy Note.

Doesn't look like it has a 90-degree screen edge to me. I know it's a render but many other pics and videos show it's smooth all around.

Too big for a phone

That's one it too big to be a phone! I think around 4 or 4.2" retina/high res display is optimal for a phone. It's in mini iPad territory at 4.8" I'd worry about such a flat device that is not really all that well built snapping in two if I hit something hard while walking and it's in my front pocket. I hope Apple will come out with a 4" for iPhone 5.

There are also thousands more McDonalds than there are 5-star restaurants. Marketshare, if you will, doesn't imply much. Not sure why people have a hard time admitting that iPhones are the superior product.

If this forum were called anything other than "MacRumors" I may think you had advice worth considering. But we are here to talk technology, specifically, how disappointed many of us are with Samsung for failing to bring anything better to the table. I personally would like to have an alternative to the iPhone, but my choices are limited because most just suck. Simple as that.
Lol, if this samsung phone sucks so much why are there almost a thousand posts about it on a mac forum? As a business owner I know which business i would prefer to own and it aint the 5 star restaurant. It would be mcdonalds. And thats coming from someone who has been a fine dining chef my whole life. And ive had an iphone for over 4 years.

Many Samsung threads here get an inordinate number of hits, be it patent suits, whatever. This is red meat. Samsung is eeevvviilll :)

People said the same thing about the GSII. I have the GSII and a iPhone 4 and the size is not that much of a difference.

And I have the skyrocket - and the overall size (even bigger than the GSII) is still very usable. And as I've said before - I love the iPhone. But now using the Skyrocket - the iPhone screen is TINY.

Read this:
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...irst-smartphone-designed-entirely-by-lawyers/

Argument: The SGSIII's looks are based on Apple's trade dress lawsuit in that it avoids almost every single one of the allegations that it's a rip off of the iPhone. That includes silly things like "no equally rounded borders top and bottom" and no equally sized top and bottom bezels. This is why it is ugly as sin.

What's even more scary: Samsung isn't doing this to avoid lawsuits, it's doing it to please its biggest customer - Apple. Samsung makes 25% of the component value of an iPhone, and probably even more on the iPad. The whole Android / iPhone war is a win/win for Samsung.

I wonder if Samsung overall makes more money on iPhones than they do on their Android devices?! It's got to be pretty close...

not sure if i should wait for the new iphone which will most likely by 4inch with some additional apps(just like the garage band, newstand etc) with 4G LTE..

i am already eligible for an upgrade(got iphone 4) and i really dont want to wait until Sept/Oct for the iphone, but then again i don't want to miss out if apple comes out with something amazing :D

Also got the new iPad which i absolutely did not need, and i am kinda getting bored of the iOS UI too :) looks the same since 2007...since my first iphone 3G

It's partly a myth that Samsung wins either way. Selling phones is by far the most important profit generator for Samsung right now because the profit margin is so much higher.

Here's the profit made from each division of Samsung Electronics from last quarter: (in Trillion Korean Won)

IT & Mobile Communications businesses: 4.27
Display Panel: 0.28
Semiconductor(this is the part that supplies Apple with chips): 0.76
Consumer Electronics: 0.53

This means 73% of Samsung's profit is from that single division, mostly by selling mobile phones. (Samsung's PC and tablet business as we know are almost negligible by comparison)

Make no mistake about it. Contrary to the popular belief, currently Samsung isn't that different from Apple when it comes to making money. Just like Apple the majority of their profit is from selling phones and if they lose the smartphone market, Samsung will be devastated, much more so than the semiconductor business. Things will change in long term but for now it's all about selling smartphones.

People will buy it, then stop buying it. It's the same with every Android phone ever released. A big month or two then plummet into nothingness...why would anyone expect any different with this phone

Yep, 22 million SII's later in less than 12 months...they're plummeting alright!

Very well said. I don't get it either.

It's just the kids and uber geeks that bored with the UI.

The majority of consumers don't want a change in interface every revision ... once they get used how the phone operates they're against huge changes. Understandably so.

Apple choosing 3.5" had nothing to do with the fact, people had been buying mobile phones for 25 years before even came to the party?...not like there had never been screens of that size before? The ONLY thing that Apple brought to the market with the first iPhone was a good operating system. Their phone specs were 1-2 years behind where the market was at the time.

So do u still use classic mac os or windows 1.0? Change is good.

So with 4 cores running at 1.4 GHz, will this Samsung phone finally be able to change from Landscape to Portrait (or vice versa) at a reasonable speed - and maybe have smooth scrolling in its web browser? Or do we need an Octocore Processor for that?

I find myself often taking a shower and go for a haircut and the Orientation on my Galaxy Note still hasn't changed when i flip it over to play a video... Wy wife hates that on her GSII as well. :p

yep. Everytime Facebook changes just slightly everyone whines over it saying "I only just got used to the last version!". I am not one of those complainers (and also don't use FB anymore) but I can see where they are coming from. If it aint broke don't fix it :)

I think we should differentiate a change in UI vs change in theme of UI.

This is one area where I feel iOS 6 could go a long way towards refreshing the user experience. Incorporate a themes option in settings where there 4 or 5 themes to choose from with the option of purchasing new themes from the Appstore.

And Samsung stores too, I wonder where they got that idea from?

Probably the same place Apple did; Sony and Panasonic had them a long time before.

For interest, there have been Samsung shops in and around London for a while now.

So this is what Samsung does when it has nothing to copy? hahahha oh deary me.

Yeap thats what i told my friends! Since apple didnt release a new redesign iphone. Samsung couldnt came up with a better design.

So they went and try some fugly on their own lmao. Good try sam, but im sure once apple release something new u will see them copy on their next gen product.

Or their next every 2 months new gen samsung galaxy s3 2.0 with the next android firmware anyone?

True story bro!

Samsung opening up retail stores is way too late to the party. At least Microsoft started in 2009, they might have a chance. Starting in 2012 - forget it.
