I have an iPad Air 3 and since I updated to 13.4 my screen will be unresponsive to touch in random spots. Is this a coincidence or is there an issue in 13.4?

Same issue on my iPad Pro 10.5 inch, hard reset didn’t seem to help, hopefully iPadOS 13.4.1 issue.

I'm having comparable issues on both my iPhone SE (2016) and 6th gen iPad (2018), both running iOS and iPad OS 13.4.1. Frequent screen freezes and incredible lag sometimes. Had to hard-reset the iPad in the middle of a Group FaceTime call and switch to my Mac. To me it seems like a system software issue. which seems to be fairly recent, since a few weeks (iOS 13.4 or so).

Welcome to the club :( It looks exactly like an infamous hardware-related problem with all modern iPad models.
It affects all iPad models including iPad pros, minis, airs and normals. It cannot be fixed by anything. It starts after 6-12 months of usage (3 months for refurb models). It's not connected to any iOS updates (sometimes it looks like it is but only by an accident), but it can become better or worse with time.
Here are more details on the issue:

Would that explain why some people with iPhones (like me) are also experiencing the issue?

This isn’t a software issue. It’s a hardware issue. I have more experience and know how about this issue compared to ANYBODY you’ll find on MR. If you have questions, PM me.

P.S. This hardware issue is caused by some random iOS update. Reverting back or DFU will do nothing to fix it.

I don’t think this affects LCD iPhones very often. It does happen but is rare. It does affect OLED iPhones though.

Exactly,I strongly disagree with DragonX and aakshey, as it is happening on my brand new iPad Air 3 which is just 3 months old. No physical damage whatsoever. I really believe its a software issue. Fingers crossed!
RIP Steve!

I agree. Sometimes software can do weird things, especially when something like a firmware update is involved. It seems odd that it would be strictly a hardware issue and not a software issue, given that all different models of iOS devices of all different vintages are suffering from this. If I had to take a shot in the dark, I would say that Apple did something to mess with the settings for how sensitive the touchscreen is (maybe to optimize it for a new device?) and that started causing this issue.

1. I’m not giving my opinion. I’m stating fact. There are 100’s or 1000’s of pages of research to back this up.

2. It doesn’t require physical damage.

3. It can be an issue with some sealed pieces. Some others might develop the issue over time. Some others might develop the issue with iOS updates. All of that is irrelevant. Once you get the issue, the only way to fix it is to change the device.

4. This is NOT software related. iPad Pro owners have this issue ever since iOS 10. No software update so far has fixed it. In rare cases for some people, sometimes software updates might fix it either temporarily or permanently. But by and large it’s a firmware issue.

Do you understand what firmware is?

It is software for your hardware. And the chances of an iOS update fixing it are slim to none in most cases.

If you still don’t believe me, I wish you luck. I do request you to drop a message here in a year or two regardless of whether you manage to fix the issue by then or not.

The good thing is, if you can prove this issue in front of an Apple genius, by means of a video or otherwise, he is very likely to swap your device no questions asked. They’ve been told to do that without acknowledging that the problem is actually widespread.

I have an iPhone SE and I have had the same issues as you. Likely it's a problem with the OS. Maybe a screen calibration thing?
Ihave same problem With ipad Pro 2018 13.4.1

Same on my devices. Sometimes everything is frozen but I still can swipe up the app.

I honestly don’t think this will last long. Report back in 2 weeks. I am 100% sure you’ll witness some lockups over 2 weeks.

Unfortunately I've seen it many times here. This hardware problem appeared first 3-4 years ago and since then there were many iOS/iPadOS updates and some people saw temporary improvements but then again the problems returned. Usually these updates and freezes appearing/disappearing is accidental.

I'm getting similar screen issues with Instagram and Apollo app, but I don't think I've ever had this happen in settings app(nor that I'm using that app too much). I initially thought about some rendering issue like some animation was running in background. I hope this is a software issue since my iPhone XS is 6 months old and the bug appears very randomly and is not always reproducible.

Edit: I don't think this is an hardware issue since the unresponsiveness happens only when scrolling and/or animations are performed

I've tested the scrolling issue on an iPhone 11 that is ~5 months old and has the same issue. It's clearly a software problem. I hope they fix it soon.

That's a heck of a lofty claim there. Fortunately for everyone else, it's just your opinion.

Then I challenge you to prove me wrong. Let us see you help these people with defective iPads.

Hint - The fact that iPhone 12 Pro will be better than iPhone 11 Pro might just be Tim Cook’s opinion at this point. But come October, we all know it will become fact.

Just like an ancient tribe might not understand modern science, but that doesn’t mean it is mere opinion. It is still science/fact.

Unlike you, I’m not speaking with zero experience/knowledge on this subject. I’ve spent months working on this and I’m 100% confident of my claims.

Give me enough resources, I’ll even prove the same to you. If not, then start doing your research yourself. Because just because you can’t see your own kidney, doesn’t make it my opinion, it’s still fact. As every doctor would tell you.

To challenge me you’ll need to hit harder by citing any single source point that claims it to be software related. Because in the last few years, I’ve not come across one that held up for more than several weeks.
