2 simple words would have fixed this hot mess.... "Pre order" that way apple would have known the demand. Yet they used idiot logic ._.

I don't even think it's an issue of not knowing the demand. Judging by the number of people who are still waiting for launch day orders to come in, it seems pretty obvious that meeting the initial demand was never a possibility. That's probably why there were no preorders. Imagine how backed up they'd be if they had even earlier orders to fill. The bottom line is that they launched without enough time and/or resources to provide adequate stock.

It's anyone's guess whether that was poor planning, or an intentional marketing strategy.

Apple should have had a clear method to cancel the online order and pick up in store if there was availability. Make it one process instead of having to risk canceling and hoping it was still available.

Except they clearly wouldn't want you to do this.
If you keep waiting, someone else would buy that phone impulsively, and they would get two sales. If someone cancels a preorder and buys that, it's only one sale.

With demand as high as it is, though, I bet most in-store reservations are people canceling and reserving like you suggested, and that's probably why the in-store stock has not been getting refilled the last few days. (all models, all colors are out of stock in south florida and nyc today, and yesterday)

I agree....not ideal for them....

But for those of us with dead or dying phones it sure makes for lousy customer service/experience....

Just be patient. Your whining isn't going to speed up anything.

I've suspected for a while that Apple "profiles" its customers. (Nothing wrong with that. Fair play.) The more business you do with them, the better they treat you. They probably have an internal credit score based on purchase (and return) history. Accordingly, they adjust your position in the queue.

What do you think?

They're probably also able to identify possible scalpers using the Apple Online Store based on historical purchase of large quantities of products (although there's a per-customer limit), geolocation (IP address/network), iTunes purchase history, etc. and prioritize genuine customers, giving more weight to loyal and repeat customers.

Definitely possible, but what is considered to be a repeat customer?

If I bought 3 iphone 5 (for genuine use purposes, not scalping), does that make me a better customer than people who bought only 1?

What if people were heavy spenders in store, but this is their first purchase online?

Not trying to rain on your parade, but there are a lot of variables in your claim. It's so open to interpretation, that it's morally questionable... even for Apple.

Apparently, Apple is preparing to launch in their second wave of countries. Maybe that is where all the stock is being rolled out to.

This article, for example, says that India's launch will be in October. http://www.bgr.in/news/apple-iphone-5s-iphone-5c-set-for-october-launch-in-india/

What I don't like about that article is the fact that it says that orders in the first wave countries have been "uncharacteristically quiet" since launch, which makes me think that they can keep us waiting while they tend to the second wave countries.

My palm is already through my forehead.

Hey Tim (Cook), we have massive shortage in supply in the first wave of countries. What should we do?

We should continue by rolling out phone to a second wave of markets! Those orders already placed since the 20th can wait.

It's like the people who continue to accumulate unnecessary debt, just because they can. Instead of focusing on clearing prior responsibilities. They decide to swallow more, without regard for those they were already accountable to.

Sure, and if something like this does exist, it'd be a sophisticated algorithm taking all those variables into consideration, and being constantly refined and tweaked... and after all, it's just prioritizing (adjusting your position in the queue), not cancelling orders.

Customer profiling is widespread and used extensively in business (example). Think of it like airlines' Frequent Flyer Rewards—the more you fly, the more they suck up to you. :) In this case, your Reward Points aren't disclosed to you.

You mean like the United States government? :D

Saudi Telecom Company (STC) over here just announced they will be launching in 4 weeks time! but I'm sure supplies will be tight like every year. I'm keeping my US order I'm hoping it will ship next week.

64GB ATT Gold ordered at 2:08am PST just switched to preparing for shipment (credit card charges now pending). We are in California for vacation and this morning it was still processing when we got on the road. Decided to check the status as we passed by Cupertino and was happily surprised that the status changed!

Maybe all of us in California should drive by Cupertino and check our statuses...then maybe we'd see some movement! :D

My complimentary case arrived today, I can't wait to go home and try it out.

I wish my phone was in the same shipment... *grumble, grumble, grumble* :(

Just got off the phone with Apple and was informed there was no upgraded shipping available for these phones due to them not knowing when they will ship

It'll be there soon I'm sure.

Btw, just out of curiosity, did your shipment make any progress today? Because I think I ordered mine later than yours and mine just moved to preparing for shipment..

I can't believe we have now entered week 3 with no word from Apple whatsoever.

Please Apple, give me a date. Give me a g*ddamn estimate at least. I just need reassurance that it's coming.

At first, I kept telling myself, "At least I'll get one 100% before the month ends." But now I'm not too sure if that'll be the case. :/

Has anyone seen any movement from launch day orders ranging between 5AM-8AM EDT?

When and what color did you order?

It really depends on the colour that you order. Silver and space grey are being shipped quicker than the gold orders are.
