Technically you can if you bought your mac after June 8th, 2009 in accordance with the Up-To-Date program. I already preordered mine 2 days ago :D

Hopefully SL is released soon. My HDD is almost full. I'm waiting for SL to install a 500GB HDD so I don't have to do it twice.

I'm doing the EXACT same thing. I have about 5 gigs left of my current hdd and plan on upgrading to a 500 GB HDD along with upgrading to snow leopard. I keep going through and finding things i can get rid of so i can hold out until when ever SL launches. I could really use the extra 400 or so gigs...

I hope it doesn't ship as this - seems far too lazy for me :p - I should imagine the design department couldn't quite slide their chairs over the computer to update any online pics without Jobs throwing a knife at them :p

So basically that page says "we're charging you for the expense of shipping. By the way, you get free shipping!"

Does anyone else see anything wrong with that?

Cheaper Box Set!

I want a Mac Box Set for Leopard upgraders. They should sell a cheaper box set so I can upgrade to iLife09. This is one way to market iWork to all macusers so they know how nice it is and be comfortable with the application.

I doubt they would put SL for sale on a shelf in an Apple store before all the Macs in the store had SL running on them. In other words... they have to exhaust their Mac inventory in the store and warehouse before retailing SL in a box. Because - if you bought a mac - they have to throw in SL in your bag and say, "Enjoy your new Mac and enjoy installing the new OS". I just don't see that happening. Better to have the new customer get SL at a later date.

That's what I mentioned in my post.

Maybe the web devs uploaded it wrong? As if you look, all APPLE products have free shipping on them, maybe that is where it went wrong.

Also, on my reciept it says "Snow leopard bla bla bla, Price covers shipping and handling" that's the actual product title.

Apple does that all the time - they just drop an up-to date disc in the box that is machine specific.

LOL. Clear stock for an OS? Don't think so.

They'll probably send all the stores new packaging, and have some fat bloke sat in the back installing the OS on all the old machines and putting them in the new boxes. :p

You actually made me laugh today. Thanks for that, I can just imagine a salesperson saying that, especially in good ol' Britain xD.

No, the drop-in-dvd they stick in the box isn't machine specific.

I bought a new Mac mini on the day Leopard came out and the only limitation with the disc was the pre-install check for Tiger.

Like has been said, they drop in a SL install disc. This is actually good because early releases of an OS can be buggy, and this way the customer isn't forced into using the new OS yet, but doesn't have to pay extra if he wants to.

Unlike the iPods still being sold without the 3.0 software, but that's a different issue...

Just had a thought. All this news with people waving their arms in the air "ITS COMING NOW ITS COMING NOW BLABLABLABLA"....

Apple still needs to release 10.5.9 right? So... Not yet? :p

It doesn't work like that. 10.5.8 is just the 8th update of 10.5, while 10.6 is the whole new OS. You don't have to have 10.5.9 before you have 10.6.

In fact, Tiger right now is at 10.4.11, which, if this was strictly numerical, would have come after 10.4.1 but before 10.4.2. And they had 10.4.10 between 10.4.9 and 10.4.11, even though mathematically it's equal to 10.4.1.

What I'm getting at is don't think about it too much in terms of normal numbers.

really? Apple HAVE to release 10.5.9? Jaguar's last version was 10.2.8.

Certainly they don't have to. Usually they don't update the older OS once a new one is out, but considering that powerpc support is dropped, and some people have PPC systems that are only 3 years old, it's possible they will extend the development to one more bugfix release.

'Twas in the newspaper. DailyMail, or DailyTelegraph.. Can't remember, but they were going on about "Just one update to go. Once 10.5.9 is released then snow leopard is next" So I presumed it was the case ;)

DONT SLAY ME xD

hehe dont always rely on newspapers. that article was biased towards one journalist who probably doesnt know what hes talking about.

my view was made from many MacRumors posts since before Leopard was released, so unbiased.

they may! i wouldnt be suprised if they didnt. but Leopard will get a few updates after Snow Leopard is released.

They usually give it a few updates. Wasn't Tiger still at 10.4.9 when Leopard came out? Now it's up to 10.4.11, and pretty much only gets security updates (but still gets those)

EDIT: My mistake, it was at 10.4.10
