I agree... or even 10.5 on ebay.

Yes, true, probably get Leopard or Leopard box set cheaper on ebay. Also, Apple might sell these at a discount after Snow Leopard is released, or some other retailers might as well.

Edit: I don't think Apple will stop selling Leopard in any event, because PPC users may still want to buy it, and they obviously can't run Snow Leopard.

Thank you all for replying... I was confused and the Apple sales rep at Regents street wasn't sure either so after a few searches I pretty much gave up. It seems the updated info is more clear.

However, I don't understand why we can't buy Snow Leopard without having to buy the combo pack? I guess it's a better sell that way.

Anyway, IF the images are true AND we get it in August, then the 432 release was in fact the final GM version. Unless it too needed to be optimized one last time. :D

Yes, they should offer a full version, without other software. Maybe they will. The fact that they've announced two products, doesn't mean they won't offer a third. It might just be an obscure option in the online store for those that need it. We'll find out soon, I think.

Actually the set is available in several stores

MacRumors has received word that a listing for the Mac Box Set version of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard briefly appeared in Apple's online store earlier today. While the page, which listed the box set as shipping within 24 hours, is no longer available on Apple's site, an entry for it is retrieved in Google searches for the product number, MC209Z/A.

I just checked now and it is available at both US store and Canadian store : 219 $ ca - questionable canadian price..

Quick question to the smart ones..

Has anyone noticed any Blu-Ray support in the new OS or is that still a "bag of hurt"?

I mean come on, every good PC laptop has BD now and to be honest, I don't buy DVDs anymore, it'd be great to watch the movies I buy at the airports and better yet, to burn my projects on BDs.

:(

Why is Apple being so vague about it? They were some of the first ones to support the format.

I did a clean Leopard install (Erase and Install) and just dragged the files and folders I needed back.

I got over 60GB back from junk I didn't know where clogging my HDD and also junk I never needed but I was lazy to manually delete.

All this to have a good start from Snow Leopard.

Good to hear, in the same boat. I was worried about being forced into archive install or upgrading.

I have to say this is sort of annoying, I want to pre-order it and get it over with but I'm unsure where the best place is and until Apple offers it, I have to wait.

Same here, have been buying Blu Rays exclusively for the past year or so and it's annoying not to be able to watch them on my iMac.

ok i have a question. If I bought the family pack for $49, could i get 5 other people with macs and each of us just chip in 10 bucks? or do the computers have to be registered to the same family.
o you understand what i'm saying?
Thanks for any help.

I believe it is for a single household.

It is possible that Apple is not planning to release a standalone "retail" edition of just the Snow Leopard Operating System as they did with Leopard (which retails for $129).

If they choose to only release the "box set" as the way for people who do not already own Leopard to upgrade, either Apple feels most Tiger users have not already bought iLife 09 and iWorks 09 or they are trying to reduce the number of SKUs they have and making it such a deal that even if you do already own both applications, you can re-sell them and use the licenses included in the "box set".

I think it uses the new Apple Genuine Advantage system for licensing and serial numbers.

Um, I think everyone here knows none of this is enforced. But if the license terms don't allow it, you can't sell part of a bundle on ebay or whatever as the listing will be pulled.

Besides, if someone wanted it for free, they could just torrent it. Obviously people care about following the license properly, which is why they are asking questions.

Agreed with regard to the boxes. But what kind of fanfare are you expecting? They'll put it on the website and send out an email to their customers. What more? Hold it until the iPod event?

well they will likely announce it before they actually release it for one. and yes that could be the same date at the September event. if there is one. at the very least they will release a press announcement.

as for other parts of any fanfare they often treat the day like a little party. having special intro workshops, handing out t-shirts etc. they could very well do this again this time
