It's amazing to see how many people believe the new MBP is cutting edge technology. Clearly they do not understand what CPU's and other components are being used in the new MBP.

Apple does make a solid laptops with good reliability and good battery life. But they do NOT make cutting edge laptops.

Yes, and practically this forum for current or prospective mac users. If somebody is not happy with recent design - buys something different - doesn't fume over it on public forum.

I want one and i will pay.

Not that complicated. I will pay gladly. I paid a lot for a lot of things; a LOT. Here I am glued to the stupid machine 24/7 (practically) and this seems like a reasonable move.

How about the famous dgpu failures in Macs?
You mean the ones that were repaired under a recall or replaced under warranty?

Discussing legitimate differences of opinion is one thing, what happens here is like the goth kids on South Park slouching on the steps.

And of course with Apple there's the ever popular sitcom "Keeping up with the Cables" staring mini-headphone jack, Apple Desktop Bus, SCSI, Firewire, USB-A, USB-B, USB-C, USB-C 3.1, Apple 30 pin adapter, MagSafe, DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, Thunderbolt and Lightening. :)

The Dude likes Thunderbolt and Lightening.....or is that Thunderbolt and Lightfoot? Abide.

Amazingly the shortest lived or most type cast careers of these stars were the ones Apple had the biggest hand in.

I think its the perfect storm of such a long wait for the latest rMBP release then the steep price, lack of ports, gimmicky Touch Bar and getting rid of Magsafe. I think we would all be happy if the machine was priced this high and everything else was on point, but with all the other issues people are pissed. That being said i think im still going to get a new 15" rMBP, the competition still has not got anything that competes as a complete package :(

The lack of ports, touch bar, and lack of MagSafe are pretty big reasons to ignore this release. It's like a child waiting for a birthday present (maybe an Xbox? Some huge Lego set?) and finding out you're getting....socks.

I think it boils down to (in this case), how this USB-C change will pan out. Their track record for this type of thing is not great. The problem, as I see it, is the reliance on Apple brand adapters, as third party makers are a crap shoot. Go to Amazon and try to buy an adapter. You get dozens of offers, all cheap from China, and all with paid reviews. This whole paid review craze is sleazy and makes these outfits look like rip-offs selling substandard junk (which they are).

So you go back to Apple branded as there just isn't anything reliable elsewhere, and Apple's offerings are limited and expensive. The cost isn't the issue for me, it's the limited offerings.

The difference this time is we're not getting any major discernible improvement. Apple opted for a thinner design which meant the optical drive was removed, but we did get a gorgeous retina display, that was a major improvement.

Now we have an even thinner laptop but we get an OLED bar that can give us more abilities to send Emojis. Yes, it will do more, but I do question the full efficiency of such a product, especially once you throw in external monitors, keyboards and mice

The OLED bar is interesting, but the switch to TB-3/USB-C is the bigger change. This will help spur peripheral makers to create more and more device that support USB-C as the default and if performance is needed, implement TB-3.

Having this on the entire Apple line means of a major computer company has committed to USB-C/TB-3 as the future. The change will eventually impact everything people connect to computers including monitors, drives, networks, printers, etc. I predict it will eventually have as much impact as putting the original USB ports on computers did.

The computer market is shrinking to be sure, but at the moment, we have Lenovo, Asus, Dell (others?) increasing their sales not decreasing, so those people who are buying computers have moved on from Apple. Maybe that was a temporary move and the new Macs will turn things around for apple.

I think this video from Jobs hits home, Apple has promoted those folks who increased sales, and not promoted innovators so we see the very phenomenon that Jobs describes

This video has been posted a lot lately. It's eerily prophetic. I'm sad to see the slip that Apple has been making. As you said, the nMP has not been upgraded (or had its price cut) in 3 years, the mac mini...

My first Apple computer was the G4 iMac when i was a teenager. I worry that the days of that kind of innovation and dedication to the home computer are long gone and that Apple is more focused on morphing Macs as we know them to merely large iOS companion devices.

Actually I take the opposite view. I think there is alot of fan-boy apologism going on. For example the thread about the 16GB limit has folks arguing tooth and nail that nobody ever needs more than 16GB and refusing to accept the opinions of those telling they need > 16GB and why. Were I a mod I would be smacking certain people as trolls on that thread.
https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...y-life-concerns.2010291/page-24#post-23820841

Well, I have to admit, that thread is crazy too. I am an assignment-based photographer that works on tight deadlines and has to push out full-frame 4K 60 FPS video files...I absolutely need more than 16 GB of RAM in my laptop, so the trolling in that thread drives me crazy too.

I guess the big thing with me is different points of view are totally cool and I'm super thankful for that. I just can't stand all of the trolling and flat-out childish behavior going on. Oh well, I guess I carry a different standard for communications and effort-level for trying to help people. Perhaps it really is time for me to leave these forums and find somewhere else for productive conversation. (Not directed at The Mercurian, just the current status of the forums here on MacRumors.)

I think that Macs used to be expensive but you got everything you needed in the box, so it was worth it.
My first MBP had far more ports than most PC´s at the time, it came with a remote, a DVI-VGA-dongle, the charger with both the plug and the extension cable, and unlike windows-machines you did not get any bloatware but instead actual software like iLife. All in all it was a great, premium, package.

Now the "package" is so stripped down that even the cord to plug your charger in to the wall is an $19 option..
Sure "iWorks" is free nowadays, but you basically have to pay $200-300 in "optional" accessories.

When they say they are "designing for experience" I think they went with the wrong kind,
because it used to be an awesome one. But it´s definitely not any more..

I certainly agree many of the threads are difficult reading right now. Fortunately most of them are easily identified by the thread title, so I don't waste much time loading them.

The iPad forum was a mess when the new Pros launched with a higher price tag and was completely unreadable for weeks. So I stopped going in there, and I awaited for everyone to chill out and move on and now it's readable again with plenty of sensible discussions.

I certainly don't envy the job of the mods on here. This site is huge, and I don't know how they even begin to keep up with all the posts that are made across all the forums on here (I'm sure they rely on us reporting posts as much as anything). Rather than asking them to do even more forum policing, I just respect they are doing the best job they possibly can do - and remind myself I'm sure it's all entirely voluntary without payment of any kind. It would take a lot of money for me to do what they do. :)

Thanks for the feedback. You're right -- it is a mess around here and is unreadable. You also have a good point about leaving and then trying to come back and see if things are better in 3-4 months.

And great points about the Mods. Just to clarify my stance, I greatly appreciate their volunteer service and I recognize they are working hard. My statements were aimed towards increased moderation towards the obviously blatant troll threads.

Cheers,
Bryan

All this while making the highest margins in the business and no, this is not because they're better at building their machine, it's because it was always made of outdated & then now cheap components, sold at an extremely high price.

A common misconception... Computers aren't solely useful based on their HARDWARE. Software is very important, especially to many who don't push the limits of the hardware and want ease of use. Apple can charge premium because their software, to many, is superior to Windows.

Guys, I'm not bitching and moaning about paradigm shifts in new technology. Innovation is what it is.

My main concern is the price shift. Yes, I ordered the new MacBook Pro. I was in the market for a new one. However, it cost significantly more than I expected. I've already mentioned in another thread that this is partly due to the weak £ etc etc. But to sting us so much for the adapters too – To continue to use our existing peripherals is a little mean... Especially when all I want to do is
– continue to use my 1TB Thunderbolt [Time Machine] HD > + £49.00
– continue to use, charge, sync my iPhone 6s+ > + £19.00

Someone is taking the piss.

Which software would that be? The autocorrect software that's been the butt of jokes for years and years? Other devices at least allow the user to edit their dictionary....Which iPhone software is better than the aftermarket replacement? What Mac software is better than aftermarket?

Apple is now just Sony or IBM on the way down.....

I just wrote a stupid-long post on this, but I think the reason people are so upset is less because of the specifics of the MBP and more about the direction both the new products and the lack of announcements or updates regarding other PC products suggests.

New MBP: At least some folks think they're no longer "pro" level based on hardware
Mac Mini: ?
Mac Pro: ?
Mac Routers: ?

I think people are extrapolating their disappointment with the new MBP's to the entire non-mobile Mac product line, and Apple isn't offering them any information that says different.

I won't buy a laptop that doesn't have physical function keys i'm afraid.
I can't remember the last time I used the function keys as "function keys" instead of plain ol' volume controls. F-what? I'm looking through Safari's menus and don't see a single shortcut that calls for a function key. I think there was one F-something that I used in Terminal earlier this summer, but I can't remember what it was for.

I'm all for the touch bar, and I haven't even tried it yet. Putting a few key functions (punny!) in an easily touch-able area on the same plane as the keyboard? I can dig it.

Hmmm that's not true, neither the premise ( hardware allowed for extraordinary things...always ), nor the "fact" software allow you to do random ********. They charge premium because they can.
Should they start to be in a difficult position ( windows nowadays, Adobe PS etc ) the would have to adapt.

By the way thanks for all the answers, very interesting.
As one mod mentioned, I'm equally surprised by the die hard fans in this mess. I have a colleague who is literally defending not including the extension for the power... I mean, for real ?!
I see how this gets to full on anger :)

Not too sure how realizing the price doesn't only represent hardware is false. You buy more than just hunks of metal with any pc. The upkeep, r and d, monopoly on the software, etc. are all in the price. Econ 1...

Tim Cook should watch this every night. In fact, every tech company should watch this at least weekly.
It's a shame the genius has left so early.

Wow...Thats insane. Literally describes the exact direction of Apple right now. Sad thing is it doesn't seem like they are going to see that until its too late.
