iOS needs half the RAM because it doesn't support multitasking.
The A12 is a marketing gimmick. So far the only use application that's been demonstrated is Apple's broken and always-on beauty mode.
There are plenty of examples of Apple's hardware being inferior too.
Only wanting iOS is fair enough if your workflow is built around it. It's the modern equivalent of how people used to be tied to Windows because their workplace demanded everything to be done in Word.
The iPhone XS cameras have tested (objectively) as one of the best smartphone cameras out today. They take amazing photos, thanks in large part to the A12 and neural engine 5T operations per second.
Apple is the clear leader in mobile silicon, period. This is not up for debate. The A-series chips are BEASTS and this will set Apple up for the future.
Chips like the A12 are more beneficial than you think. It's fast chips that makes the iPhone useable far longer than other phones. They are also building for the future, which will be huge for the next wave of computing on mobile. Why would we not want silicon advancing at a high rate?
The screen was tested (objectively) as the best smartphone display on the market by DisplayMate. Say what you want, but the testing is scientific...
Apple also has the fastest storage on the market (tested) and the best and most secure facial recognition hardware Android has still not caught up with.
I just gave you hardware 4 items Apple is clearly leading or among leaders as proven by science in some cases and industry experts in others.
iOS is really all Apple needs to separate themselves from the competition, but they've even started doing it with hardware as I just explained.

I have a feeling that people who are involved/around/interested in tech see Elon Musk as a "new way of thinking" and in their mind that's immediately better than what came before. However, as you point out, "BMW, Porsche, Toyota, or Mercedes" to those companies cars are their bread and butter and they are way more experienced than Tesla.
Toyota sold their old manufacturing tech to Tesla because it was viewed as behind in the industry.
You ever seen a BMW plant? There are like no humans. Oh, and BMW knows how to make electric cars too (when they need to). The tech is not proprietary and is almost entirely about manufacturing ability, which Tesla isn't even in the top 10.
