I see people saying we should move production away from China, and while I’m all for that (and decentralization in general), it’s not as straightforward as you might think. Tim Cook famously explained that around seven or eight years ago. Their Chinese suppliers can drum up 20,000 engineers within 48 hrs if need arises, the US simply doesn’t have those people.

High-end MacBook Pro models are experiencing extended delivery times due to component shortages and ongoing lockdowns in China caused by the global pandemic, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

In the online Apple Store, M1 Max and custom M1 Pro versions of the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro deliveries are delayed until late May or early June, and in-store pickups are unavailable until June.

We have also heard from several MacRumors readers who were waiting on MacBook Pro models ordered in March and April and who have now had their shipments significantly delayed because of Apple's supply issues.

MacRumors reader Eric, for example, ordered in March and was supposed to receive his machine by April 22, but now his order has been delayed until mid-May. MacRumors reader Vera was supposed to get an M1 Max MacBook Pro on April 13, but now the estimated delivery date is May 9 to May 16.

We've received several reports from frustrated Apple customers who have been patiently waiting for their MacBook Pro models to arrive in April, and many of them are now being forced to wait until at least May as Apple tries to solve its supply issues.

Apple might provide more color on its supply chain problems during Q2 2022 earnings call which is set to take place on Thursday, April 28. In addition to MacBook Pro shipping delays, Apple is also seeing delays for the Mac Studio with M1 Ultra chips, and some Intel-based Mac Pro models.

The MacBook Air, Mac mini, and iMac appear to be readily available, as do Apple's iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches.

I ordered mine exactly in January 15th, 2022 and I'm still waiting for it.

I guess I got pretty lucky in getting a MBP 14" 64 GB then. It was just, magically, in stock with a local retailer. I was thinking these machines would always be BTO and most shops would only stock a couple of default models.

Apple stores seem to stock a higher spec’d MBP 14” near my location. Just over a week ago I got a MBP 14” Max with 64gb/2TB which our local Apple store had in stock with same day delivery/pickup. Saw many other Apple store locations within 100 miles showing this configuration in stock when I checked out.

It appears many items that are not the base model are seriously delayed. My M1 Studio Max with 64GB and 1TB SSD is slated right now for the end of June to Mid July. I'll hold my breath that it even arrives in that timeframe right now.

Regarding delays, I wonder if UPS isn't helping with their (generous) estimated delivery dates.

Waiting on 3 Mac Studios... Apple status says "Shipped - 04/09/2022" but also says "Estimated Delivery Date: 04/21/2022". (Invoiced 04/09/2022)

When I got the invoice I checked with UPS app and it said delivery by 7pm 04/12/2022. That came and went Then yesterday they removed the delivery date and said check back. Today it says "Package is delayed in transit. Delivery will be rescheduled. Check back. But on the same app page it says, "Rescheduled Delivery Monday, April 18, by 7:00 PM".

It's actually impacting IMACs as well. I ordered the IMac 24 at the end of March (16 memory as opposed to the standard 8) and it was supposed to be here on April 12th. I just looked and it got pushed back to mid-May. *long sigh* It will most likely be pushed to June at this rate. I need this desktop for work so it's a real bummer

This is simply not true. I can tell you firsthand that iMacs are impacted. I ordered mine at the end of March. (16 memory as opposed to 8) and was told it would be here by April 12th. It's now showing mid-May.

I really wanted a new one, but didn’t want to risk any further delays, I thought May 9-16 was already an awfully long wait.
The refurb should be here Monday. I have a refurb 2015 MBP and it’s been fine. Only thing you have to watch is the number of cycles on the battery, though.

My refurb will arrive tomorrow, yeay! My advice, go for it while supplies last.

I decided to cancel my IMac 24 because the delays were too much. Ordering a computer in March and having to wait till mid-April is one thing, but waiting until mid-May/June is just ridiculous.
Fortunately, they just so happened to have a 16 GB refurb in the color I wanted available and triple the storage of the one I originally ordered. I've been checking refurbs this week and it was the first time I saw the one I actually needed, so I decided to go for it. Hopefully, it doesn't bite me in the ass.

I ordered a 16" M1 Max chip with 64GB memory and 2TB storage on January 4th and the status changed to preparing to ship this week. They originally told me 6-10 weeks.
Was able to order this exact spec from BH Photo Video around 6 weeks ago (when they had it in stock). For those of you who are ordered recently or have yet to order, check their inventory regularly as they have many different configurations in stock, especially the higher end models.

That’s why it always pays to check multiple configurations and locations. Congrats on that score without waiting.

Honest question - how much of the parts that go into the Mac Pro are also manufactured in the US?

We all know the answer to this question. I was simply pointing out that the Mac Pro was the only Apple computer not assembled overseas.

If you wish to speak in more general terms, the majority of consumer electronics (over 90%) originate primarily from countries such as Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, and China to name a few.

The Mac Pro is the only exception. They're assembled in Texas.
Only if you buy one in the US, the Mac Pros at my work are made in China.

My mate's Macbook Air was made in Vietnam... Apple started diversifying their manufacturing last year but these things take a long time.

I was lucky person to got "Preparing for Ship" status today on my MacBook Pro 16" 2021's order. It's now arrives on April 21-28, 2022. The same order date was March 20, 2022 with my sister's M1 MacBook Air 2020. Her M1 MacBook Air 2020 arrived on March 28, 2022, so she was a lucky person.

My MacBook Pro 16" 2021's order was still "processing" status yesterday. My MacBook Pro 16" 2021's original delivery date was April 28-May 5 at time of ordering (March 20, 2022) by my dad.

My MacBook Pro 16" 2021 specs:
  • Apple M1 Max with 32 GPU core
  • 32GB memory
  • 1TB SSD
  • No custom configuration

Configured model (any change) - 14th June
