I don't think there's anything that needs to be fixed.

If you have redeemed/bought iLife/iWork through the Mac App Store, you can update. If you haven't, you can't.
When I got my MBP at the end of 2010 it naturally came with iLife included for free. I later purchased iWork. Yesterday after upgrading to Mavericks I was able to update my iWork apps but I wasn't able to update my iLife apps, it only said that I had to pay for them.

It now seems to have been fixed and I am currently updating my iLife apps.

Also hasn't iLife been free for a number of years now and pre-installed on all Macs? If so why has it even been in the MAP with price against it?

If you go to My Account in iTunes, rather than MAS, and look at recent purchases you should see that you have purchased the updated apps for free.

YES! They're there. Twice, actually...

I've also noticed it didn't remove my old versions just added the new.

Thank you,
Gary

For everyone who has not a mac running on english, try changing your primary language in system preferences / language to english and restart your machine! this worked for me and many others.

I got the iWork and iLife apps simply by installing 10.9 into a parallels machine then signing in with my Apple ID :D

Was having issues with it telling me the apps were downloaded with another ID previously

how did you get iWork free?
because I hadn't iWork in my iMac 27'' mid 2011. So after upgrading to Mavericks, I set up a fresh new Parallels virtual machine with Mavericks to fake a fresh new apple activation as you supposed to to.
but in virtual machine pages, numbers and keynote are not still free.

Apple is fixing that as fast as possible. Yesterday none of my media apps (Garage Band and iMovie for example) was updating due to video card incompatibility. Today they updated fine. so, internally is something they are working on. calm, relax they are updating.

Apple Support Confirmation

I had purchased iWork before the App store when it was still on the discs, and when I tried to upgrade yesterday it told me I would have to purchase them all again. I did so, reluctantly, hoping that Apple would end up either not processing the charge or offering a refund down the road.
I indeed received my receipt today, being charged for each app. I then called Apple just to confirm and the rep that I spoke to confirmed that if you have purchased the discs, then you would need to repurchase. I don't expect this to go over very well, and we may still see Apple change their mind and acknowledge previous purchases.
Time will tell.

This made the update for iWorks 09 available on my Mac:

1. Change system language from German to English
2. ???
3. Profit :)
Wow... great! I didn't know that it's because of the system language. Tried reinstalling numerous times already.

THANK YOU!!!!:D

I don't care what Apple Support confirmed. I just changed the system language to English and then all iWork apps were shown as available updates and after I click update, App Store prompted me to enter my Apple ID and then all the apps are now associated with my Apple ID. I don't need to repurchase anything. In fact, many members here didn't even purchase iWork '09. They just downloaded the trial and Apple gave them the full new iWork for free.

... Being in the same boat I contacted Apple earlier today. After getting the run-around with billing, I was eventually transferred over to an iAPP guy, who said, as per the press release all current users would get the update.

"Pricing & Availability
iWork and iLife for Mac come free with every new Mac purchase. Existing users running Mavericks can update their apps for free from the Mac App Store℠. iWork and iLife for iOS are available for free from the App Store℠ for any new device running iOS 7, and are also available as free updates for existing users. GarageBand for Mac and iOS are free for all OS X Mavericks and iOS 7 users. Additional GarageBand instruments and sounds are available for a one-time in-app purchase of $4.99 for each platform."

Keep in mind iWork '09 purchased on disc was the same as what was available in the Mac App Store, both were updated at the same time with the same features and same version number. As was posted on Macrumors and MacWorld, and according to the rep I talked to, if you are running iWork '09 you are eligible for the update/upgrade.

(make sure they don't try to trick you into iWork '11 there was no such software.)

I purchased a new Macbook Air directly from Apple at the end of Sept.

I updated to Mavericks yesterday. Today, I just got a notification from the Mac App store (in my notification pane) that I qualify for free iWork. It took me to my Mac App store where all three iWork applications showed up as "FREE".

woot! I guess Apple is providing a "recent purchase" program of sorts.

I don't know if it matters, but I bought my Mac at the end of Sept but it did not arrive until Oct so I didn't register the computer until the first week of Oct.

iWork '09 becomes updated for free

iWork '09, in early 2010 installed with DVD. Never registered. No problems at all. Updates have been offered and delivered for free. Very nice!

I am a legitimate purchaser of iLive '11, iWork '09 and Aperture 3. I purchased all three on DVDs before the Mac App Store ever existed. Since the opening of the Mac App Store, I've never had ANY updates available for those apps through the Mac App Store. It's as if the Mac App Store can't figure out I've got them installed.

Prior to the latest Aperture update to 3.5, PREVIOUS Aperture 3 updates (through version 3.4.5) showed up via Software Update. Such is not the case with Aperture 3.5. I'm stuck at 3.4.5.

Yes, I registered all of my software with Apple when I purchased it. Yes, it was on this very same computer and it was with my current email address and Apple ID account.

I've tried every trick mentioned in this thread, to no avail. The updates simply aren't showing.

Screw it… I fired off an email to Tim Cook to ask why Apple can't figure out the basic functionality of connecting Mac App Store updates to someone's registered Apple ID account for software they've previously registered. This is the type of thing 99% of the developers get right from the very beginning. Why is Apple having such a tough time with it?

Edit: I figured out why Aperture 3.5 isn't being offered to me as an update…. It requires OS 10.9 (Mavericks). I can't put Mavericks (or Mountain Lion) on my Mac Pro 1,1.

Mine updated them, but after that doesn't recognize that it has already done so, so whenever I open the MAS it lists all my iWork and iLife apps as needing updates still

Tried every suggestion (except reinstalling). Nothing so far. Will try that tomorrow, with little hope that it works.

I phoned AppleCare about this, and they were confused: On one hand, they only have the "new devices get the apps for free" memo, but on the other, there's that PR statement.

Either way, will try the reinstallation tomorrow.

I had the same problem, but figured out how to upgrade my iWork suite from reading this thread. I cobbled together the below steps from all the postings members did above. Thanks everyone.

1. upgrade to Mavericks
2. Uninstall iWork once Mavericks upgrade is complete
3. install iwork
4. register the software with the same email you use with your apple id
5. a box should pop up stating a new version of the software is available.
6. upgrade in the App Store

hope it helps :)

Any word on Apple issuing refunds? I sent them a support e-mail 24 hours ago and still no word back.

Edit: Never mind, just did it manually through their website.

I'll try it your way. You see, there is so much information, and "so many ways" to solve this problem... Apple should have done this in 2011, when the App Store appeared. They should have given the equity to legacy apps right then, but noooooo.

BTW, did it work with both iWork and iLife?

Hopefully it works for you, worth a shot.

I did not have the same trouble with iLife, that I did with iWork. I was able to upgrade all the iLife suite right away.

I’m getting some weird…issues…

I downloaded all the updates just fine last night: Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iPhoto, iMovie, and Aperture downloaded and updated just fine, no fuss, and I even launched them all just to see. GarageBand was not showing as having an update available, but would let me “Purchase” it for free, and would start to download as if it were a totally separate app from the existing GarageBand. I canceled it for the time being.

Now I’m back, and I started downloading it, but suddenly iMovie started updating again…and now shows as having updated to the same version twice in my history. After reading a tip about resting my account warnings, I also clicked on “check for unfinished downloads” and suddenly, all of iLife and iWork started reupdating again (but not Aperture)…I paused GarageBand and I’m letting them all update…why is this happening? I find it so strange.

I tried going into the Guest account prior to all this per another tip but that was fruitless.

[Update: And now iMovie is updating…again…I’m not one to have every had any issues with updates, both OS X and apps.]
