Well, we can just disagree on that. I agree an option to make the dock act like you want would be a good idea, but I prefer it the way it is.

YES, IT DOES. There must be something up your end. Here are my dock settings.

Unless it's because you're still using a mouse.

Dude, you're talking out of the side of your donkey.

When running an app in FULL SCREEN MODE IN LION, the dock does NOT show up if it is placed on the left or right side.

Trust me, I've tried. MANY times. It only shows up if it's pinned to the bottom. I don't use it that way because on the MacBook Air, the top-to-bottom screen real estate is too valuable to waste having it on the bottom, versus on the left where there is plenty of horizontal room. It's not about a setting. It's broken.

lets be honest. if OS X Lion came with a bar of gold, someone here would find a reason to complain. If OS X came with a dead horse, someone here would still defend Apple's decision.

while I don't like a lot of features in Lion (and I do like others), I'm glad theres a built-in way to turn those features off. they're not forcing anything on us (mostly), but rather giving us variety and allowing us to compute the way we choose. if you don't like to scroll down, you can scroll up. if you don't like the dock or applications stack, you can use launchpad. if you don't like moving the mouse, you can use gestures. I, for one, am beginning to appreciate the variety of choices we're being given...

I DO NOT know what the HECK you are on about!!! It works perfectly for me – with both a MOUSE and my trackpad. Here – I even made a video to prove it! In this video, i was using my mouse.
Oh, and it's worth noting that I was able to record, edit, and export that screencast in a couple of minutes with no extra software – Apple has added enhanced screen recording, editing, and exporting tools in Quicktime (and you don't even need Quicktime Pro now). Another reason I hate Lion...

As an aside, some of you may not have to deal with this, but I could only imagine the sheer horror of trying to deploy this in an enterprise.

On this point, I fully agree. =) It would be horrendous. Hopefully IT guys and gals will be made aware of the option to switch back.

I like your walking analogy, by the way. We all have our ways of explaining away Apple's decisions, either in the positive or the negative. Yours is well-reasoned and we both have our preferences. Nice one!

Ok hotshot, I figured out what the problem is thanks to your video.

It does NOT work in Firefox or Chrome. At all. It only works against Safari and "Apple apps".

Unfortunately, Safari is so far behind both of those browsers that it will never get used by me. And so the domino effect begins...no Safari, no dock full screen. No dock full screen, no full screen. No full screen, no Mission Control...since I'm not switching Desktops just to access the dock.

works just fine on my chrome ... "ur doing it wrong"

Lion is not right

I installed Lion on a spare disk in my Mac Pro. So glad I did. I've had loads of "fun" tweaking it to try and get it to do what I want it to do. In fact this was why I switched from Windows to Mac. I spent too much time trying to get windows to do what I wanted instead of being productive. Now I find I am here again.

1. Mouse scroll inverted? What was the point of that? FAIL I use a desktop, not an IPad.
2. Address book and calendar themes? Who designed these? UTTER FAIL. Had to install new 3rd party skins.
3. Can't connect to my NAS anymore. No option to use the older security method EPIC FAIL. Do they really think I'm going to go out and buy a new one? or stop my business whilst Buffalo try to make a patch? Luckily I found a site that told me how to enable it via terminal. The saying "It just works" not anymore.
4. Now there is no "Save as" function in Iworks. WTF? I have to make a duplicate of the file, then when I close it down I get the opportunity to rename it? Such an improvement in workflow, ergonomics..NOT:mad:

So the drive with Lion on it is OUT. First time ever, since Vista have I stopped using an OS because it is not usable for me. For me Lion is the Windows ME, the Vista of Mac OS X.

Just hope they listen to the feedback.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I have to agree with stu on this one, yes i like apple but they have faults. Lion is a minor upgrade hence the price. Apple know people will purchase the new os the sheep will think everything is fine and know one is allowed to dispute that, which is wrong.

I downloaded it on release day but after installing i just thought ok is that it? was glad to read it had better security but thats under the hood features. Lion is a very basic upgrade and as some have said these upgrades could of been made free, but a company has to make profits hence the minor charge but massive return as over a million downloaded on day one.
What these knew apple fanboys and girls need to understand is apple is not perfect and do get things wrong from time to time. Even as of now I'm considering getting the white iPhone now so not to be charged a riduculors price when iPhone 5 comes out, i don't care about the lastest and greatest like most people do know a days to follow fashion, i just want something i know works. Anyway enough of my rant. being a sheep is not cool. use your own brain.

No doubt the sheep hurt by my truth-ness will hit the down button. Truth hurts i know!!!!!

Unforeseen consequences

Lion was only £20 odd quid for me. But I was considering get a new Mac mini, with the SSD and core I7. But I doubt very much if Snow Leopard will install on it. So if Lion does not improve then I'm trapped with old technology. Apple don't get a sale and I might find myself buying old machines to run Snow Leopard on, or going back to Windows? Wow I never thought it would come to this?:(

Nope. Wrong again. Chrome & Firefox have not yet implemented Lion's Full-Screen Mode API yet – and you should've known that. How do I know? Sparrow has recently been updated to take advantage of Lion's native full-screen mode, and I just tested it with the exact same situation (dock on the right, full-screen) and the dock appeared just like it did with Safari.
It's like asking, "Why does my iOS 2.0/3.0 app not multitask in iOS 4?" or "Why does my Windows XP app not have jump lists in Windows 7?"

Google have even confirmed that they're still working on full Lion compatibility. However, based on your track record, it's safe to assume that you'll somehow blame Apple for this too, one way or another.

But! I even have a [possible] solution for this: if you would like to enable full-screen mode on non-updated apps, you can try this SIMBL hack, but I haven't tried it myself so don't come stomping back saying, "IT DON'T WORK!!1"

I don't know about you guys, but I have no problems with Lion. But I see a trend as a mac user since Powermac 8500 :) every time when Apple release a new version people start to complain. Don't get me wrong I would love if Apple listen to my needs and implement them in OS X, but that's not the case.

We must learn to be patient when it comes to software :) they will fix whatever doesn't work for you, but as we all know good things takes time. It was the same with Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard and the whole Jungle :)

off topic, but I hope multitasking is a new thing for os5

Last year's news. Multitasking (Apple's limited version of multitasking) came along almost a year ago with iOS 4. Apps which were not updated to take advantage of the handful of things an app can do in the background will not multitask. There is not much chance Apple will introduce the kind of multitasking that is available on other OS (Windows Mobile, Android, etc) where apps run full speed in the background and you have to spend time finding and killing apps to recover memory from time to time.

As for the title of this thread: Apple FAIL. I disagree. There are some disappointments in 10.7 like the loss of Rosetta but overall I believe Apple is moving in the right direction. Bottom line (fearless prediction): In a year or two, you will be able to buy an "iPad+" running OS X Lion. And unlike those awkward win 7 tablets, the iPad+ will actually be usable.

Good news is: 10.7 is a far bigger releas than snowboard leopard ever was, and as such this will speed up 3rd party adaptation due to customer demand. Eventually we will be the ones to reap

Thats a shame, was hoping for full multitasking :D

havent seen any non apple app that runs in the background yet, just suspends then resuming at where it was

anyway , sorry for taking thread off topic

But right now...well it just sucks that I had to install Windows 7 just to access my bank acount :(

Well, iOS already has a perfectly good multitasking API in place, so I don't see Apple changing it in the near future (if at all). In fact, it's such a good model, that Microsoft implemented a similar concept in Windows Phone 7. Their previous OS, Windows Mobile, was infamous for its "real multitasking", so that makes their decision even more monumental, and goes to show that Apple's implementation has been met with nearly-unanimous approval.

it sucks for me, but it could be the apps, but tell me if this is possible

I have a todo app in os x & ios

I add an entry in os x with a reminder for this afternoon for something
the time comes when the reminder is due and nothing appears in ios, this is because the app cannot run in the background, I have to physically open the app to get it to sync

background/multitasking for me is the ability to do things without me having to intervene, just like apple ios apps do

add something to calendar on os x, it auto goes into calendar on ios
add a todo in os x, it only goes into 3rd party app when i open it

I have never got to the bottom of this, but is this an ios limitation, or is it just not coded corectly

Your todo reminder could have been implemented by the developer with push notifications.

Well you either haven't installed many apps, or don't recognise when it's multitasking. Skype works in the background, many download apps download files in the background, Air Video keeps playing video in the background while streaming to an AirPlay device, and Pandora keeps playing, and allows you to use the native iOS music controls to control playback – just to name a few of the more popular implementations.

In this particular case, the developer could have used push notifications in the app so that you don't need to even open the app at all; the reminder would get pushed from their server to your device without any intervention. Push notifications have been around for 2 years (even before Apple released multitasking), so it's quite surprising that the app in question doesn't have such functionality.

My only complaint in lion so far is that in mission control, windows that are minimized does not show up. Finder, I hate to have favorites on the top list on the sidebar I would like to put devices and shared on top of favorites. Also I haven't found a settings to change my default view I would like to setup my default view as column view and also it would be nice to change the sort by option also and choose a default setting.

Other than that I love lion. It requires some getting used to but once you do, you really start appreciating all the things apple did with this OS.
