Still don't like it after episode 4. Writing is still horrible. I don't know why the writers think they need to repeat things a million times each episode. In this one, it was the "bind your sword" line over and over again. And why in the world do we need a swordfighter when everyone has phasers? Makes no sense. Worf had combat skills, but he didnt carry around his batleth everywhere (because it's no good against technology!)

Interesting how there have been very few that disliked the show (after actually watching it). You would expect it to be either 50/50 or somewhere similar.

I am one of those who have liked it so far yet agree with some of the criticisms.

Bottom line is this is all the Trek we are going to get. Complaining that it doesn't follow Gene's original vision (can't say I disagree) isn't going to change that.

Discovery is entering its 3rd season and Picard has already been renewed for a 2nd season.

Well, I did read an interview they did with Patrick Stewart, where he said he felt the need to make "Picard" delve into current issues. He intended episodes of it to reference events like "Brexit" and the immigration issues of the Trump presidency. He said he intended it to be a darker, more dystopian view of the universe than the cheery utopia of TNG.

I definitely sense the "SJW" element of a need to cast as many females in "power" positions as possible, as well. Pretty common trend in Hollywood productions in general, as of late.

But at least so far? I stick by my opinion that none of that is "in your face" as a viewer enough to greatly detract from the series. (For example, the sudden presence of so many important female characters vs. other Trek series is noticeable -- but I think they all play their roles pretty well, and without any overt man-bashing going on. So I don't have a big issue with it.)

I don't find the writing "horrible", but I do agree they repeat a few lines and ideas too much. Maybe my standards just aren't as high as they could be, but I've watched SO much science fiction that ranged from painfully bad to just ho-hum? I'll still take this series' writing as far above the norm for the genre.

The swordfighting thing? I dunno. Why do the Jedi still run around with light sabres in Star Wars when everyone has blasters? Really, why would ANYONE waste time learning the skill of fencing or swordfighting today when guns work so much more effectively and from greater range? Yet, people still do and take pride in it. I assume it's just about the religion and tradition of that group?

Some interesting comments. For myself I have noticed that when new Star Trek series like Voyager almost immediately rely on recycled scifi themes for their stories, that this has turned me off. If I remember correctly, Voyager did a chicken or the egg time paradox in an early episode, besides I did not care for the Captain character, who was on the masculine side when functioning on the bridge.

(As a contrast in the STNG series final, Captain Crusher did not bother me in the least. :))

The subject line says spoilers!

What a strange episode. The infiltration was goofy (too goofy if you ask me).

Then we have a staredown at the end with Picard and Seven that was so powerful and moving.

And then the annoying doctor does THAT!?! Wish I could watch the next episode right now.

Warning: Lots of spoilers:

Always knew she was evil. Why they trusted her always confused me. Not sure how she is going to get out of what she did to Dr. M without the entire crew knowing, but I’m sure they’ll find a way to keep her real intentions hidden somehow. I hope the EMH isn’t just “wiped” conveniently.

I don’t know what to think about this last episode. Still doesn’t “feel” like Star Trek to me - there was a lot of emotional scenes in the beginning - then the whole cantina thing was really quick and forced. So... when 7 decides to enact revenge, you notice how a good percentage of the staff has emergency beam outs? One would think the most important person there would ... have that too? Or beam in of security personnel? Why does her security need to run in? Why doesn’t she assume 7 would return?

Those phasers were pretty cool. Wife noticed how the security staff were missing like storm troopers. LOL.

I am not that critical really - it was really fun to see the development between Picard and Seven, the mention of Noonien Soong, and several other references like Quark. That was awesome awesome.

Picard felt more like Picard this episode but a “background” observational Picard.

I can’t wait for next episode. :)

I did notice that the piano player getting transported! That was so weird.
I'm mostly enjoying the series so far, but I've had a couple of big problems with the way they've handled a few events.

The first was when the "Zat Vash" assassination team showed up at 'Chateau Picard' and couldn't take out an old man and his two Romulan assistants (all of who were unarmed) in a surprise attack. (Now that's something a Romulan would want to keep a secret! ;) )

The other is the whole deal at the bar. It was really all to convenient for everyone (save the dead minions) except for uh ... what's her name...'the borg collector'... to beam out when the phasers started firing.

Also the ensemble crew seems a little haphazard and a wee bit too 'literary convenient' when it came to 7's appearance; I hope that kind of thing gets better.

I am kind of liking the fact that the squeaky clean Starfleet is now not free of sin when it comes to the upholding it's values. They chose politics over doing the right thing and the decline in influence seems to have taken much of the 'golden boy' shine off of the federation.

I'm also liking Picard as a character, he seems to be suffering not only from the failings of the federation, but personally wounded after his position of the great saviour of the Romulans was snatched away from him. It really does seem like he hid from the universe in the Chateau to lick his wounds.

The whole story though surrounding the synthetic uprising is obviously tied up in this. (Oh I loved the fact that the instigator android was named F8 ... or phonetically..."Fate"), but it really needs to gain traction in the up coming episodes. Especially how it ties into any Romulan myths.

This reminds me of Stargate Origins - another storyline with a much smaller budget. Instead of a starship with a large crew, you get more of a Star Wars crew. The story line moves at a snail's pace as well. But it's Star Trek and it's Picard, so I think that fans will give it a give it a lot of room. So I'm optimistic. But I'm enjoying The Expanse more than this series right now.

The first 3 seasons of the Expanse were great, monumental. Season 4 was ok, but seemed relatively slow and to drag out, which I don’t think is good when you just have 10 episodes to make a point or there is a danger of losing some part of the audience. To clarify, it did not lose me. ;)

I think that I'm on the fifth episode of The Expanse and I do like it. There's so little SciFi that isn't vampires and other things or overall poor quality that I'll take what I can get.

I meant first 3 seasons, not episodes, duh... Which season are you on? Happy to discuss it in The Expanse thread. :D

4. I should probably say something there. I just found this thread structure - pretty cool place to hang out if you like science fiction.

Spoiler Alert.

I apologize for being overly critical. Still doesn't feel like Star Trek yet. But I'm enjoying it and watching it. :D

How has no one reactivated the EMH so the EMH can tell them what happened? That bothered me. I know that Dr. Jurati is a super ai programmer and probably wiped the EMH's memory but... just annoyed me that she got by with murder so easily. Can't trust anyone.

It was REALLY COOL to see Hugh again - I didn't recognize him at first. The Borg are my favorite - I have a Borg license plate, lol.

Also annoyed the HELL out of me that the amount of time spent waiting at that jump gate talking, they all could have gone through it with no need for anyone to stay.

The whole talk with that admiral to get Picard access to the cube was just terrible. lol.

Did it seem like Picard completely ignored Hugh's comment about how the Borg are slaves under the Romulans? lol.

The acting of Soji/Dahj is amazing. However, the whole walking on the paths in that room just seemed way too cheesy to me. I was hoping for a Vulcan Mind Meld type thing.

Continuing to watch :D. I can't wait to see Jonathan Frakes next episode.

I've only watched four episodes as my daughter wants to catch up from starting late. It feels more like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon than NCC-1701.

Really loved the latest episode!! Chills big time with the reunion scenes! Those guys are still so good together and their chemistry is still fantastic!!! It's almost like anyone else in a scene with them just gets taken along for the ride!!

That woman has a mouth like a toilet.

Her character is the most unbelievable for me. From saying Picard's "nickname" over and over and over and over so unnaturally... to having a vaping addiction to thinking her son would take her back and believe that she was "clean" .... lol. The call where she got Picard access to the cube was the most unnatural cringe worthy unbeliev... ok I'll stop. lol.

Oh, not her. The other one. The Starfleet top brass who likes to throw an F word or two at an old geezer like Picard.

Ahhhh - yeah that was awkward as well. How does someone become an Admiral and have a temperament like that? :) That would be exploited in a second by anyone.

spoiler time.

It's crazy how this show bounces from so goofy (group talk with captain clones) to so serious (OMG she's reconnecting to the cube).

When Picard was describing Data to her that was SO GOOD.

I think the Admiral's response was warranted from Picard's interview. I am sure anyone at Starfleet would not want to be open to helping someone who just throw them under the bus.

Mind you, I am not taking her side here (or the f-bomb), but I felt the moment needed an impact such as that to register to Picard (and the audience) what a dumb idea is was coming to Starfleet to ask for help after the interview. Anymore information on this would be spoilers territory, so I will not elaborate.
