Well, I did read an interview they did with Patrick Stewart, where he said he felt the need to make "Picard" delve into current issues. He intended episodes of it to reference events like "Brexit" and the immigration issues of the Trump presidency. He said he intended it to be a darker, more dystopian view of the universe than the cheery utopia of TNG.
I definitely sense the "SJW" element of a need to cast as many females in "power" positions as possible, as well. Pretty common trend in Hollywood productions in general, as of late.
But at least so far? I stick by my opinion that none of that is "in your face" as a viewer enough to greatly detract from the series. (For example, the sudden presence of so many important female characters vs. other Trek series is noticeable -- but I think they all play their roles pretty well, and without any overt man-bashing going on. So I don't have a big issue with it.)
I don't find the writing "horrible", but I do agree they repeat a few lines and ideas too much. Maybe my standards just aren't as high as they could be, but I've watched SO much science fiction that ranged from painfully bad to just ho-hum? I'll still take this series' writing as far above the norm for the genre.
The swordfighting thing? I dunno. Why do the Jedi still run around with light sabres in Star Wars when everyone has blasters? Really, why would ANYONE waste time learning the skill of fencing or swordfighting today when guns work so much more effectively and from greater range? Yet, people still do and take pride in it. I assume it's just about the religion and tradition of that group?
Still don't like it after episode 4. Writing is still horrible. I don't know why the writers think they need to repeat things a million times each episode. In this one, it was the "bind your sword" line over and over again. And why in the world do we need a swordfighter when everyone has phasers? Makes no sense. Worf had combat skills, but he didnt carry around his batleth everywhere (because it's no good against technology!)
