I would guess you were buying this anyway (?) so between the two of us that's two sales down to one sale, no?

Yes, I was planning on buying this before.

But I agree that if you really were ready to buy this for $10 and this is a deal-breaker to you, then they lost a sale.

The only deal-breaker I'd have is if they went to $100 of in-app purchases or said that I can't download this to my family's phones/tablets for free.

I'm always near wifi or a cell signal, so it doesn't matter to me about the always connected aspect. I don't travel in planes or subway often either.

Yes, because piracy is rampant on iOS.

Nintendo is going to end up like RIM if they keep this up. Their consoles are not that good anymore and seem more like gimmicks than anything. So resistant to move FORWARD all for the sake of fear.

No, Nintendo is not going to end up like RIM. The value of their IP is in the timeless characters. They don't expire, like tech IP. Also, their upcoming Switch hybrid looks to be a home run. This iOS game is just some extra spending money for them.

So, in conclusion, think before you post next time.

Doesn't mean squat if the hardware you put out is crap, time and time again. The switch isn't a home run until it's released and the people decide it as such. Let's not count the chickens before they hatch :)

He's still buying it, whether admits it or not.

No, I'm not buying. I'd appreciate it if you didn't libel me. :p

Yep. Fair enough.

In this post from a former thread I said:

"I will probably buy it to support one-off payment games, and to encourage Nintendo to release more on iOS. Unless the game is terrible or something, which I doubt it will be (and they're letting us try it first, so where's the harm?)"

So I was all for it. It turns out 'the harm' (for me) was the then-unknown requirement for an always-on internet connection, which I think is unacceptable for a game of this type. As I indicated in the quote above, my planned purchase was as much about supporting and encouraging Nintendo to release games on iOS as anything... I have enough Mario games across numerous consoles, and I love most of them, so that would have been a bonus, but I can live without it quite happily.

When asked specifically what the company's concerns were about security on mobile devices, Miyamoto confirmed the risk of piracy facing Super Mario Run since it's not launching on a dedicated Nintendo console. "We're launching in 150 countries and each of those countries has different network environments and things like that," Miyamoto said. "So it was important for us to be able to have it secure for all users.

Well, there's a non-answer that makes absolutely no sense.

Also, I find it funny that at least one MacRumors commenter seems to think jailbreakers somehow magically get paid apps for free. Cracking apps is orthogonal to jailbreaking - there have been ways for even non-jailbreakers to get cracked apps, if they wanted to.

OMG! This!

So much outrage for a game being played on a device that almost always has a connection to the internet.

I swear you people are always looking for something to complain about.

It's easier than accepting that none of them are actually pilots or travel more than perhaps once a year in a plane.

Yea, I think if enough of the community speaks up, Nintendo will change it.

No sale for me either.

If I'm doing a 5 hour car drive to NY or pushing a stroller around the outlets for 2 hours, I'm sure as hell not gonna be tethering my phone to my sons' ipad mini so he can play a game that should work 100% offline.

Agreed, there MAY be a small pocket of losers who played pirated iOS games, but this is like dropping a bomb on an ant hill.

Hopefully they do an about-face.

For some it'll be about practical concerns of losing a internet connection in the middle of playing, sure. For others, including me, it's more about the principle of the thing. I was ready to give Nintendo money for their game to say 'great, more Nintendo games on iOS please, and I'm happy to pay you properly for your work if it means a good experience.' But that good will is now gone from me. They have to earn it back.

Maybe it'll just be me and a handful of others, and hardly anyone else will care. If that's what people want I guess that it is what they'll get. *shrugs*

I was at the Apple Store this morning to pick up my MacBook Pro from repair, and I noticed all of the employees wearing the Mario badge on their shirts. I tested the game on an iPhone 7Plus and it's fun. Great graphics, but gameplay is a little weak, which was disappointing. I'm not sure that it's worth $10, but I am sure there are millions of fans willing to pay it.

This is dumb. Why can't the game just check the first time you install it to insure that it is a paid for copy? Why does it have to constantly check that?

The time to validate a purchase is at first install and launch. Or if not that, then when you first launch the app, or once a day perhaps. But continuously? I absolutely can not think of any reason or scenario to continuously do it.

As an iOS app developer, the first thing I have to do when thinking about getting anything from online is assume that there is no connection.

What you have said is the exact opposite of what the majority of mobile phone users experience.

Holy crap, that's horrible, what an idiotic and unnecessary policy. Was just about to pick this game up later this week but I definitely won't be buying any Nintendo games that have that restriction.

What's next, activating security dongles that hang off the lightning port? Shame on you, Nintendo.

Nintendo was bound to shoot itself in the foot with this. They haven't done something right since the GameCube.

This thread will be nothing but complaints yet the game will be a huge success despite those cries.

It may be an issue for some here but for the 99% of those that download games, they won't even notice and won't care.
I'm not going to spend money on this game because of this. A garbage policy for a game not worth the money nor the Nintendo overwatch.

So I can't play it on the 12 hour flight I'm taking on the 17th? Damn, I was hoping to be a pro by the time I landed!

Even then, Mario is going to be a free game with in app purchase (not sure if that makes it even more complicated to pirate or not).
I could be mistaken, but I've heard that there will actually be two different apps out on the store. The free one with the first 3 levels for the main game mode, and the paid one with all the levels for the main mode. Both versions will have the Toad Race and Kingdom Builder modes available. I have not heard whether they were going to offer an in-app upgrade for the free or if the only way to get more levels is to delete and purchase the full game.

People never learn. EA disaster with the last Sim City that they originally claimed only could be played online "due to the cloud" but wasn't , the original plans for the Xbox One and the gamer backlash that got the whole division pretty much fired, etc.

Good luck, Nintendo. They already screwed up their next console launch by not having the new Zelda done in done in time and won't sell any at all now.

Eh? AFAIK isn't Breath of the Wild still slated for March?

Wait, you're saying 99% of people won't ever play this game on a plane or subway or anywhere else there's no good wifi?
They will leave terrible reviews, and then likely the game will have mixed reviews at launch (2-4 star range) which might effect its revenue, at which point they will likely release a fix to allow offline play. As many here have said, a large majority of people live in cities and use subways, planes, etc. These people will get frustrated
This seems like the most likely scenario. I'll definitely be waiting for that fix before I buy it though.

The game will be free to download and play.

It will have an in app purchase of £9.99 to unlock the full features of the game.
