I'm pretty sure the iPhone 8 will be strictly pre-order only... I can't imagine them screwing over pre-order customers again by having walk-ins get the phones quicker.
They definitely give preference to preorders. My one waiting-in-line experience was fr the 4, which had a colossally effed preorder, which led to thousands of us having to "reserve" and then go wait at the store to pick up. There were 2 lines, one for reservations & 1 for walk-ins, and they were taking in probably 10 of us for every one walk-in. It wasn't long before they started down the walk-in line, telling them all to head home because they were out of stock for non-reservations.

They won't have lines anymore. This became very obvious last year. No Apple Store worldwide had lines. People who insisted on staying were only allowed to pick up an iPhone 7 not pluses. iPhone 7 were still available for online ordering till day of launch. Making queuing up pointless

Could be because

1. Scalpers who buy 2 and have ordered 2
Online.

2. Hype not as great, shorter ques and most will prefer ordering online. media agencies will use to suggest dwindling sales

That's not exactly true. I can tell you firsthand last year there were lines in my state to various Apple stores for the iPhone 7 launch. So I'm Entirely sure how you can make that statement for every single Apple Store that was selling the iPhone 7 at launch .

I do agree that pre-ordering has become the primary and that's likely what Apple prefers I just less chaotic a more structured for the customer. And yes, scalpers unfortunately take away from the experience from standing in line when they are there for nothing more Purchase and resell immediately for a ridiculous amount of money.

Assuredly , there will be lines for the iPhone 8 launch, especially given the hype behind the major overhaul and this year being the 10th anniversary.

I have noticed in my neck of the woods that lines do not seem to be as prevalent at carrier stores but still a staple at the apple stores.

1. You may be confusing lines for walk in purchase with lines for pick up for those who had online reservations. Big difference. At the end of the business day Thursday Apple stores worldwide were given a memo instructing staff
to tell people in the queues to go home as they only had the 4.7" 7 and no jet blacks come 8am Friday morning

2. If u are referring to lines of those that were camping outside an Apple Store up to a week before, they would have walked away empty handed if they want a plus model cause no store had walk in plus model stock worldwide

As I mentioned the only model u could walk in and pick up was an iPhone 7. Again pointless if u queued up for that cause u were allowed to
orded them online even on launch day. #nodemand

No, the only thing that was confusing is when you stated:

They won't have lines anymore. This became very obvious last year. No Apple Store worldwide had lines.

You can't state there is no demand, when there is initial demand, but supply was constrained. Huge difference between supply versus demand. And given we don't know Apple's method of operation this year with launch day availability either.

Furthermore, that's not entirely true with our quote I included in this post. You can't say they won't have lines entirely anymore, as last year was more of a debacle with the Apple upgrade program and or those who are looking for a specific model. But you made a sweeping generalization when you said "No Apple stores worldwide had lines. " That's false. Even if they were turned away, I can tell you plenty of stores that had lines last year regardless if they knew the customer was aware or not if they would receive the model they were receiving. That's the point I'm making.

This year will be no different, there will be lines and there will be those who are going to try to obtain the model that they want on launch day due to hype/demand with the iPhone 8 and the all new redesign.

You are indeed confused

I. I stated no demand with reference to the iPhone 7 not the plus. So your whole supply constraint is irrelevant.

2. I said and will say again. No Apple Store had lines. I said "no lines" in a thread asking if I'll "line" up again for it overnight. If u in your infinite wisdom decided to group lines of people who came at 8am to pick up their reserved iPhone with lines of people who queued overnight then that's your issue

If people queued up overnight for a phone despite Apple Officially stating either directly or through various media links that
there will be no outright sales of the 7 plus I don't know what more needs to be said.

When someone comes up to me and asks
If there were lines like previous years. They aren't going to be referring to the 30+ people
who were there to pick up their iPhone because they didn't trust their home delivery service, they are going to be referring to the Fans that queued hours to chance getting an iPhone on day 1

You can't say they won't have lines entirely anymore, as last year was more of a debacle with the Apple upgrade program and or those who are looking for a specific model.

This year will be no different, there will be lines

Only a few countries had the upgrade program. Majority didn't. Yet the same lack of queues was seem worldwide.

And now u go on mention looking for a specific model...

LOL

What do u think going to happen this year?!?

People are going to queue for the 7S plus?!?

It's the 8 they are after and the same shortage they had with the plus last year they will have the 8 this year. We are looking jetblack like shortage.

No different. Although u seem to think otherwise

There will no walk in stock of the iPhone 8.

I have always queued to get the new iPhone but I didn't last year because the message was clear that there would be no availability of the Plus at the retail stores and so I pre-ordered online.
As long as Apple make it clear as to whether their retail store will stock the 8 on release day or not then it's an easy decision.
I would be surprised if there was walk in availability. Apple seem to be all over the place with logistics. Apple never used to have issues with stock in the retail stores.

It could be fun if apple bring back this way

Never have, never will. Not my thing. More power to those that do.

Do you realize there is a difference in saying there were no lines versus lines weren't like they were previous years?

I did that once with the iPhone 5, on a lark. I don’t think I’ll do that again. It was at a small independent Apple reseller store near U of I campus. Employees said they would have a good supply of phones. I took time off from work and was number 11 in line. They received 8 phones and all were either the wrong size, or color or phone company. The nearest real Apple store is about a 2 hour drive so it’s just not worth it. Especially when I can do the get up in the middle of the night and sit in in my jammies in front of the fired up MacBook Pro, iPad Pro and iPhone 7+ hitting keys as fast as I can to see how lucky I can get.

What fun. :D

As much as I want it on launch day, I'll pre-order thru Apple (on IUP since I have the iPhone 7 already on IUP) and I'll just be satisfied knowing I have one on the way (no matter how long that will take ;))

It will already be very difficult (or near to impossible) getting one on launch day without a pre-order...

I seem to alternate between reserving for in store pickup and ordering online. This year looks like an order online year. Having a rowdy toddler makes me less motivated to walk into an Apple Store ;)

I have no desire whatsoever to be anywhere near an Apple Store on an iPhone release day. I'm preordering online and having the phone shipped to my house.

I've had 2 iPhones and 1 iPad "lost by carrier". I don't want to deal with that again so it's gonna be in-store pick up for me.

I've heard stories of people receiving empty shipping boxes, but this is the first I'm hearing of a carrier "losing" shipments. I guess some of their employees are getting bolder.

They must haves company wide investigation going on related to this.

From what I understand, their internal loss prevention systems are so advanced, they can find out exactly who took the contents of the package and where. Of course, this only applies to courier services - USPS is excluded from this, as they don't care about missing packages.

As the question states... if iPhone 8 is all of what you feel it will be... will you be lining up outside the Apple Store to get one given supply will be limited? If so, have you lined up before for other phones or will it be your first time?

Years ago, when the Nintendo Wii was in fashion, I bought one when it was on sale. Guess whether I will be in _any_ queue, for any product.

And then there was (shown on TV) that poor guy in Australia, who was the first person ever to buy some new iPhone model, because it was released in Australia a few hours earlier than anywhere else, TV crew got hold of him, asked him to show his new iPhone, he unpacked it in the street, and dropped it. Lucky it wasn't damaged.

As always, I will join the line with you folks and I'm willing to pay €1500 for grass...

iPhone fans won't pay €1,500 for grass, they will pay €999 for an iPhone 8. That's because they are not sheep without brains. People without brains buy from a company whose phones explode, whose washing machines explode, whose TVs are bricked by a software update, whose factory workers die from cancer, and where the heir to the company has just been convicted of five years in jail for corruption, embezzlement, and a few other things.
