He's like, yeah, nothing to look forward to, but somehow they got me to drop $400 on this little thing that I wear hermetically strapped around my wrist for 12 hours every day, for "fitness" – which I could have done with a $100 fitbit, but whatever.

To be fair, he does have a point. Most of Apple’s products are iterative because they aren’t in new product categories and can feel slight boring. But if you look at products from 3 to 4 years ago rather than products from last year, the changes are still quite significant. Tesla will be like that too in a few years once they push out their major car types and services like self driving and the trucks. After that it will become iterative like their current cars models. Not everything needs to be reinvented every year. Evolution is what actually helps most products reach their full potential.
Great point!

This is something that longtime Apple observers like John Gruber and Asymco have been saying forever - the mass market thinks Apple's forte is creating novel new products, but in reality, their DNA has always been yearly iteration of every product, a relentless focus on refinement and improvement in every facet.

This may not be all that interesting to those who want a big splash from year to year, but over several years, this relentless focus on refinement compounds into truly amazing products.

That's what Apple really is, but most observers just can't see it.

Apple are very strong with the internals, but the story is about the design. Apple were the leaders in computer design. No company was anywhere near them. Now they are not even the leaders. Apple have played it safe while the opposition have come on in leaps and bounds.
Wait... who makes better designed HW than Apple these days? Who is leaps and bounds ahead of Apple in this regard?

Simply changing things for change's sake isn't innovation - that's marketing.

Hes not wrong though, Since Tim Cook Apple has played it very safe and has not really done a lot of exciting updates to the iPhone for example. The X was the big leap but since then innovation has stalled. The Apple Watch as well. I upgrade annually, but lets be real, Apple has not innovated in a long time.
I just looked at all the things Samsung announced yesterday. Where's the innovation? Same form factor as before. Just better screens and faster charging.

I mean, who IS innovating at the moment? Who is creating something radically different?

The answer is NO ONE.

Smart phones have started to consolidate around the dominant design that has proven out over all other variants. This is an industry-wide phenomenon - in an ultra-competitive and lucrative industry to boot - and not a case of one company "resting on their laurels"

My hypothesis is that at the moment, we're consolidating additional computing power and new technologies during this plateau, and once those reach a certain threshold, then brand new device categories and designs will be unleashed.

I guess their spinning is not working as intended…you meant demand it’s so high, it’s all back order?… perhaps even the whistle.
Every single automotive brands vehicles are backordered. Tesla isn't special. The Elon worshippers are also the only ones buying a whistle in doge coin.

There are a lot of members in here calling out the man for being a bad designer. The thing is with what he says about Apple is true though. Take away all of Apple's hard core/devoted fans who will purchase anything Apple regardless, what has the general computer buying public got to 'look forward to' when it comes to looking at and wanting an Apple product? This is not about what's under the hood of the product either. Macbooks look the same, ipads, iphones, watches, imacs.

The man basically says ...'lamenting that Apple doesn't deliver something "to look forward to.', so go on MR members who are having a go at the man, prove him wrong, and like i said, what is under the hood does not count because an M1 macbook looks virtually no different to an older intel macbook air. So, like I said, discounting Apples fans who will buy anything Apple regardless, what has Apple built that will get the general computer buying public go 'oh wow, I must have that'?

A couple of months ago Apple has released a laptop with 400GB/s RAM bandwidth and a groundbreaking miniLED display. Tesla's designer's reaction: "nothing to look forward to". Go figure. I guess it depends on which product category you look at. Sure, the Watch didn't change much from the initial release. Then again, neither did Tesla.

As a model 3 owner, I can say I was more excited about picking up my 16" M1 Max MBP than my M3 :)

Oh I see…I thought it’s was an innovative thing, since it’s started long before the pandemic, and all other companies started to copycat them.
I believe they are “looking forward” for next interaction of the whistle that will allow you to call your car with the thing.

And you’ll surely get more “bang for your bucks”.
Personally I’m suspecting I mistakenly order an unknown “Hérmes” edition of the 16”M1max, as it’s currently going into 5 months!? expected delivery date…

One of the biggest issues to me is that there is nothing exciting about anything with some of the products anymore outside of specifications. Design is one of my biggest gripes.

Case in point: laptops. If you saw someone at a distance in a coffee shop with a Titanium PowerBook from 2001, you wouldn't think twice about it. It's just another Apple laptop. Sure, there have been some design changes over 21 years, but there's nothing that really makes anything stand out.

Remember when we looked forward to the appearance of new iMacs? They've been the most utilitarian looking machine now since the G5 came out. Sure, we have colors now, but it's not enough.

iOS hasn't really changed in appearance since version 7. I'm glad macOS got more colorful, but iOS really needs a revamp or at least some customization options.

As far as revolutionary new features or products, I think those are becoming something of the past, but we're at the point now where there's no excitement.

Even the earlier Macs had more excitement in their design. There's a distinct character difference between a Mac Plus, Mac SE, and Mac Classic. That just doesn't exist with the same line of products anymore, whether it's an iPhone, a laptop, an iMac, etc.

The guy that designed the Cybertruck is saying all this? That pretty much explains it.
Well, actually the Cybertrucks design shows something, most modern civil cars don't: an interesting design/form at a time when all other manufacturers' cars are exactly the same.

Before I forget: it's easier to put things in a rectangular space than where everything is rounded and there are no right angles. And modern car design is just like the later.

Tesla does not even update their cars annually. In its entire run, the Model S has had only 1 iterative revision. I can barely tell the Model 3 and the Model Y apart. Only two new things they have done are Model X (which has not significantly changed since release) and the (gag) cybertruck which they have not delivered.

Of all people to complain that Apple is not doing anything new in design it should not be coming from this guy. Even copycat Samsung has done more drastic innovative designs with their foldable phones.

UPDATE: I figured out what he must have meant by “There’s Nothing to Look Forward To”. He thinks Apple should announce more products and services that they are not going to deliver for years or ever. That way you can look forward to them.

Tesla has set the example here:
- Tesla Semi
- Tesla Roadster
- Tesla Cybertruck

And the best one of all… the one you can pay for in advance while looking forward to it and hoping it will one day work:
- Tesla Full Self Driving
Model S has been iteratively updated multiple times. The body style has changed 3-4 times. The internals, interior, etc. have changed many times as well. The sensors, MCU, cameras, etc. have changed several times.

While I’m an Apple products user I have to agree somewhat. Apple does evolve products. Nothing really revolutionary. Very few “One more thing” moments. Just my opinion some put your flames back in your holsters.

What we need is a timeline, showing Apple's new product releases. If only such a thing existed.

So... it's like a Mac or iPhone?
