I'm brand new to jailbreaking ect, I'll probably (hopefully) get an iPhone next week. I really appreciate the time put into this thread, I'll definitely use it as guidance.

Are there really enough 3rd party apps to substitute for the app store?

Can I now upgrade to 2.0 safely?

Ok, so you updated to iTunes 7.7 and then installed 2.0 and you’re stuck. Here are the steps to downgrade to 1.1.4. Note that the result of this guide will be that you will be back to 1.1.4 version of firmware with baseband of 2.0 (4.05.04_G).

Ok, I followed directions similar to this, when the pre 2.0 upgrade failed. My directions included using Pwnage Tool, which I admit I didn't fully understand.

It resulted in a working but now unlocked iPhone with Pwnages custom graphics.

Anyway.... can I now use iTunes to safely upgrade to 2.0? Will this brick my phone? I assume it will relock the phone, which is fine.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

JR

Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction ...

I have a 1st generation iPhone, jailbroken & unlocked using iPlus 2.0 in April.

running version 1.1.4

and here's where it gets a little more complicated ...

I am on Dobson Cellular One, that was bought out by ATT earlier this year. At some point, my service will be provided by ATT (we already have ATT branded bills). I am told that one day in the coming weeks/months the phone will say ATT instead of Cellular One.

Does anyone know what, if any bearing that will have on what I need to do to use the new update? And what exactly do I need to do? Thanks so much!! :)

Might be worth noting that your Warranty section refers to the US market as other markets have different regulations regarding warranty obligations.
ie Activation is not required in the UK market for warranty cover.

Don't update to 2.0.0 just yet. Pwnage tool is still not released to support 2.0.0. If you do upgrade, you will loose your cool apps, pwned, and uncloked state.

Quick question.. I'm following the guide posted on http://sleepers.net/news/?page_id=216 but when ever I try to restore my iPhone using iTunes 7.5, I get some error that says "Software for this iPhone is not currently available. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes and try again." At this point, I have no idea what to do.

I've shift clicked 'restore' and selected the 1.1.4 version I downloaded, but that doesn't work either.

my iphone 3g was not found as a ipod in itunes 7.5 under DFU..

?

same in both pc and macs..?

help, please..

To use your iPhone 3G with iTunes, iTunes needs to be version 7.7 and no other.

General Note to Everyone
There is no unlock for the 3G iPhone nor any activation of jailbreak so far. Please do not believe any site in the Internet that says different. The Dev Team will release a method for Original iPhone users not for 3G. 3G first has to be worked on to see how it works hardware wise to come up with a solution software wise.

Wow, did you really mean downgrade a 3G iPhone to 1.1.4? I am not sure the phone will even run on 1.1.4 as there is new hardware, etc. If you goal was to buy, unlock and cancel AT&T, O2, etc plan and pay the ETF fee, you should have waited until there was an unlock for 2.0 on 3G iPhone. It is very risky to be messing with the 3g as no one has really had time to disect the new phone.

Please Take Note!!

I am sorry, I forgot to mention the downgrade procedure from 2.0 to 1.1.4 is for first generation iPhone only. If you have the new iPhone 3G the downgrade procedure will NOT work. Once again, I am sorry for not making this clear before.

Great Job

I would like some feedback on the guide. Things like spelling, syntax & grammar to a minor level count.

Also, anything that needs to be further explained is welcomed to be suggested. I would also appreciate if people will compile a small list (6) questions that I have not addressed in the FAQ section.

Thanks.

My suggestion is to also add a reference to this website, that continually post verified procedures with nice illustrations and that are available in many other languages that can become handy for many people.

First of all, what a fantastically exhaustive thread. Great work Jav. I now feel I have a reasonable grasp of most things iPhone.
I'd like to jump in, if I may, and ask a couple of quick questions:

1)I have unlocked, activated and jail-broken my 1.1.4 1stGen iPhone using Ziphone. I hope to upgrade to 2.0.0 and use the new pwnagetool to do the same (when it is released). Is this possible? I know pwnagetool will be able to jailbreak the new 2.0 firmware, but can it unlock and activate also? I was also wondering if there would be any conflict having used Ziphone previously?

2) I read in a few places that installer.app should be installed during Ziphone's jailbreak/unlock/activate process. Ziphone 3.0 did all the important stuff, but installer has not appeared on my home screen. I am keen to get installer.app working so any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

Thanks again and good work!

can someone help me

I bought an 4GB iphone online. The person i bought it from said that the serial no starts 5K807 indicating that the phone was manufactured in the 7th week of 2008? can anyone tell me what generation phone this is? Also she updated to2.0. Can I downgrade to1.1.4? Also do i need a sim in the phone to do so?I'm a tmobile customer thats why i'm asking this because the phone is not unlocked or jailbroken. Should i just sell the phone and buy an unlocked 1.1.4? im new this a virgin you mighy say so if i missed someone posting sorry just hoping someone can answer me.

Yes, it is. Yes you can unlock and activate, also Pwnage jailbreaks always so you can have the free apps from Installer. ZiPhone's stuff will be deleted and your settings Restored to your own custom settings (like own boot & restore images).

Well, ZiPhone is a bad and very dangerous tool to use. Sometimes it screws up and when it does, your iPhone suffers. However, You will be able to have Installer in your iPhone with Pwnage.

If this is an 4GB iPhone then it was manufactured sometime before October/September 2007, not in 2008 [4GB iPhones stopped being produced as of September 2007 so its impossible you have a year 2008 4GB iPhone].

These 4GB iPhone have all 3.9 bootloader. They can all be downgraded/unlocked/activated/jailbroken. As for 2.0.0, yes it can be installed in it and run just fine. You just won't have much space for apps, but other than that you should be fine. As for 1.1.4, it also runs smoothly.

T-Mobile in the US will work perfectly with your iPhone. There is even a hack so you can pay the T-Zones $5.99 Unlimited Internet/Data Plan.

Please do ask anything you feel you need to, we are here to help :)

The following procedure is for 1st Generation iPhone ONLY!!!

1) The first problem in your downgrade is that you probably are getting error 20 in restore mode and error 160x in DFU mode. This is due to iTunes 7.7. So, you now you need to uninstall iTunes 7.7 and install iTunes 7.5. Make sure after your iTunes 7.7 uninstall you reboot your pc as it requests you to.

Will this completely screw up my iTunes database, like ratings and playcount and playlists? Because I want to uninstall 7.7 and install 7.5 for the 2.0 to 1.1.4 downgrade, but... well, I don't know if I want it badly enough to screw up my iTunes library. Thanks...

Hey.

i have firmware 1.1.1.

how do i update it to 1.1.4? is it possible?
or do i have to update to 2.0 and then "downgrade" it and then once it is downgraded (from the steps above) then download the .ipsw file and unlock it with ipwner?

thanks in advance

thanx

i appreciate the help with my problem and the timely answer. So im sure i got a refurb phone which is fine with me. the is a great site and there is a lot of helpful info here for someone new to the iphone world again THANX

Well, I did the downgrade of iTunes once from 7.5 to 7.4.2. Least to say everything went smooth and no complication. Songs stayd labeled and evertyhing stayed organized.

What you have to realize is that iTunes is just a mere organizer. iTunes will organize stuff in your music library and that stuff will stay that way. Reason is that organized music is in a separate folder. Long explanation short, it should not mess your organized library.

Update to 1.1.4 using iTunes like you normally do. Then use Pwnage tool for Mac or WinPwn for Windows in order to Pwn and then install a custom firmware in it.

There is a link for a tutorial on iClarified (tutorial which has pictures of the procedure) in the FAQ.

Please note that right now 2.0 software is not compatible with Pwnage/WinPwn. Dev Team and cmw are expected to release an update soon

Ok, that is a weird problem. Please specify more what you did, how you did, what OS you are running.

Anything specific can help me determine what went wrong.
