Apple Watch has me out running 300-400 miles a year. Unfortunately, Apple Watch also led to stress fractures in my feet. Dam you Apple Watch!

When AW first came out, I was the only one I knew who had one.

Fast forward to today and half of the office, everyone in my immediate family, and every iPhone-owning friend also has one.

It's anecdotal, sure, but I've seen first-hand how much the AW has grown.

IMO, series 3 was the first *real* Apple Watch, as Series 2/1 was lackluster and Series 0 was borderline unusable.

Still, I've enjoyed this journey since the beginning!

And while my apple watch 3 has been a great device and super convenient for public transport and purchases and other minor things, the watch faces are still anaemic.

I honestly thought Apple would have made it more customisable by this point or at least put out faces on a regular basis, but nart...

I don't remember seeing people say it would bomb, except for the 10k version! People were like, wtf is with the 10k! And I think that was on point on that one.

Apple watch (Iphone companion - which is a better name for it) isn't as revolutionary as Tim promised. It leads in a segment that is still isn't that big (comparatively) and wearables haven't taken off. It still is the best smart watch for sure. But it still doesn't have wide spread adoption. And I think the reason is clear.

Iphones don't dominate as much as Andriod devices around the world (market domination in US and Japan really). I keep hearing Apple Die Hards not believing Andriod's world market penetration. And that's just silly.

So that brings me to what is holding back the Apple Watch from being wide spread adopted. First, it's only useful with Apple devices. I can't really use all the features unless I have another iphone (example imessages and walkie talkie). When most of the world DOESN"T use imessages (Wechat, Line, Whatsapp), the utility of the watch goes down. Also, If it was compatible with andriod, imagine the trojan horse Apple would lay into the Andriod ecosystem. I think it would convert more people to the Apple ecosystem.

Really excited about ekg and future benefits, but it would be awesome if people on Andriod could use it so I could use the communication features with them.

As a communications device my Apple Watch is great! I’m responsible for over thirty school district networks, small and very large. Every day I get over 100 calls, emails, and texts. I need to quickly decide which require immediate attention and which can wait a couple of hours or a couple of days. I may be in a meeting, on the phone, researching/planning, or at home with family. The watch makes me much more efficient. I don’t need to interrupt what I’m doing to pull out my phone, I simply glance at my wrist. Obviously it doesn’t matter what device or method the sender is using.

Wasn’t it going to be a huge fail?

It was. So Apple added some actual features to it and now it's a quality accessory.
[doublepost=1556145157][/doublepost]
Apple Watch shipped around 9 million units in the final quarter of 2018. In 2017 it outsold the entire Swiss Watch industry combined (Rolex, Swatch, etc).

So please, let's hear about how much of a failure it is.

I like the Apple Watch but you shouldn't compare it to real watches. It should be compared to fitness trackers and other wearable tech (where it's still hugely successful).

The lifetime of real watches is measured in generations not seasons.

(Personally) still cant see a use for it. If you're in to fitness tracking it's obviously a no brainer, but take that away and theres just nothing there that makes it worth paying for over just, ya know....looking at the phone you've got in your pocket.

Really hope that it one day becomes something more than a gimmick when you exclude the fitness side of things. When you actively avoid social networks (so dont want notifications) and don't generally have a lot of text chats going on it really seems to be useless.

Haha. Now that I’m not employed by apple I can tell a story.

Our store manager pitches the first Apple Watch as an “Heirloom” and that’s why the price was so high. We’re not selling just another device, this is expensive and has a high price point because it’s jewelry; it will be passed down to the next generation in a sense, just like any other watch. This was all just after announcement so no launch.

I piped up and said “but lithium ion doesn’t last that long and the chipset will be outdated by the time it’s released.” That little comment put me on his ****-list for a year.

Apple has come a long way and isn’t pitching it as that anymore, thank god, but that was something I’ll never forget.

hopefully a real battery life...
Do you have one? My S3 is at 75% at bed time. I've never once had a dead watch even after 2-3 days. I feel like most comments like this (maybe not yours, don't know) are not real owners. If you plug your phone in < every 2-3 days, it's not hard to plug your watch in too. If it lasted 6 days, I wouldn't be any better off.

I definitely love my S4. I bought the S0 when it came out, but just couldn’t quite justify the $400 price tag at the time and returned it. Managed to get my hands on a badly scratched one for only $50 a few months later and wore it until I cracked and got the S4. Now I have some deep scratches on it and it makes me sad. Is there really no “liquid glass” or something like that to fill in these scratches so I don't have to be so sad every time I raise my wrist?
If you figure out the glass fix, please, let us know. I would also use it

Irrelevant.

The only way to measure success is by tracking the number of people who DO buy your product, not the ones that don’t.

I don’t ever recall any company a analyzing their performance based on how many people didn’t care about their products.
you can try to turn things around your way all you want but it work both ways
I really don't know why you say irrelevant because it looks very relevant to me
if there 4 trillions people on the world and I billion agree with you
then what about all the others

don't agree
don't care
this one is really going to bake your noodle
not-sure

Would you recommend upgrading from S2 to S4? My S2 is in great condition but some of the apps are so slow or they crash a lot. I went for a run with NRC and it hadn’t recorded half of my run and was so slow.
I would....I went from 38mm S2 to 44mm S4. The S4 is so much more faster, easier to read and better sound performance etc etc!

That’s impressive, keep up the good work. And on a sidenote, that’s really what the watch is made for, as a companion to be a Health tracker to monitor your goals, and I think the monthly fitness challenges is a unique way of marketing the watch for health aspects, along with closing the rings.

Apple sells 200 million iPhones in a year. How do they (or every other company on the planet) report it?

“We had a very successful year - we sold 200 million iPhones.”

“We had a very bad year, 6.8 billion people didn’t buy an iPhone.”

There’s nothing to turn around - my original comment aligns exactly with how all companies measure success. By how much they sell.

yeah but also they need to know or calculate how many more they can still sale
let's say apple sold 100 millions iPhones
80 million iPads and 1 million watches
do you think that makes the watch successful
yes they sold a million units but that is nothing compared to the other units
you don't need to compared with the ones who are not buying
you can also compared with the ones that are selling
then you will know if your product is being accepted or rejected
a million units is not a failure but is "irrelevant" compared against 100 millions
:D

Have the series 0 edition, still perfectly fine. Having zero issue, yes slightly slow but still getting full day of battery.

Same here. I still have my Series 0. With a few exceptions, I've worn it every single day for nearly four nears. Still get a full day's battery. Take calls, use Apple Pay, record my workouts, etc. etc. Amazing device. Show me another smart watch or fitness band that works this good after four years -- I bet you can't!

Eventually I'll upgrade, but Kudos to Apple for making a spectacular product right from the beginning!

You're certainly welcome to your personal definition of what constitutes success for a product/product line. It goes against the grain of the universe, but we're all entitled to our opinions.

I own one, and it sits on my desk. I'll sell it when I get around to it... it's just not an impressive piece of tech, and the screen needs to be bigger (wider). I love huge watches, and many people out there do also. Most of my watches have a 52mm bezel.

Bigger watch and you'll get the older crowd with bad eyes.

I’m guessing you do not use yours outdoors with GPS? If you do, it is a very different story.

And still meh...
Is like Captain Marvel and Brie Larson... forgettable. We never knew she won an Oscar, is like the stripper in the strip club everybody passes by and nobody notices it. Apple Watch is there. "Let's pretend" because someone with power from upper management likes it. If disappears, nobody will ever notice it.
Not sure if serious...

There are likely near 60M of them sold.

No, what’s irrelevant are Android Wear and other smart watches that sell a fraction of the Apple Watch. They own this market just like the iPhone owns the flagship smartphone market and the iPad owns the tablet market.

That’s how you measure success - by outperforming all your competitors.

I really like my Apple watch but in this case it's more function over form.

I was really hoping they would open up watch faces to third party developers. The watch faces are severely lacking.
