What panel is in the Pro Display XDR?

Another panel made by LG Display, but that one is Mini LED with 576 local dimming zones, it’s even better than the ones coming out this year, hence the price…

Actually, I was wondering if we had a model number, and aside from the FALD backlight, what the panel differences are.

From that link:

“contrast ratio of 1 million to 1, with brightness of up to 1,600 nits, and shows a picture quality that exceeds the high dynamic range (HDR) quality."

The principal difference from ca. 2019 LG Display 5K displays in specs is due to the backlight — brightness and contrast ratio are both determined by the backlighting system — the LCD panel itself is the same pixel pitch (218 ppi) and 10-bit color depth that the ca. 2019 5K panels are capable of, with a custom timing controller that synchronizes the pixel switching in the panel and modulates the zones in the backlight:

My understanding was those 5K monitors are 8-bit FRC.

Yes and no. We’re talking about the LCD panels here — even the earliest 5K panels from LG Display were capable of both true 10-bit and 8-bit + FRC, as well as both true 8-bit and 6-bit + FRC.

This is discussed above in an exchange between myself and @PaulD-UK about this history. The key point is the fact that the 2014 5K Dell (10-bit depth) and the 2014 5K iMac (8-bit depth) contain the same LG Display panel. Then, in late 2015, Apple updated all the 5K iMacs (including the 2014 model) to 8-bit + FRC.

Why Apple chose to use 8-bit + FRC pixel switching instead of true 10-bit depth (and has continued to make that same choice to this day, in the current Studio Display) is a good question. I don’t know. But it’s worth pointing out that the difference doesn’t matter to the experts at VESA, at least with regard to HDR performance — the DisplayHDR specifications don’t require true 10-bit depth. 8-bit + FRC is also acceptable.

Don't see any real competition listed in the original post?
Except for the ASUS 32" 8K, which isn’t available yet, and will be almost double the current Pro Display XDR price.

The heart of this is the timing controller, which synchronizes the IPS panel’s pixels with the complex backlighting. It remains to be seen how well ASUS does this, but it’s a good sign that they received DisplayHDR 1000 certification.

The serious 4K competition is OLED — it’s hard for me to see Apple putting a lot of money into 32" IPS 6K+ with thousands of backlight zones when 5K+ hybrid tandem OLED may be on the near horizon.

I'm looking forward to reviews, the panel looks super interesting. For NA folks, can we order this on Taboo?
Yes, and Taobao (which is owned by Alibaba) is the only option (if you don't want to overpay) -- I almost ordered it the day before yesterday, but decided to reach out to them first, to clarify a few things before starting a thread about Geekon. Shipping appears to be free (手续费 is a "handling fee"). No indication of tariffs (I'm in the US), but they could come later in the shipping process...

New images of the LG showed up along with a 1999 euro price here: https://www.mediamarkt.nl/nl/produc...ips-paneel-in-hoogte-verstelbaar-1890653.html

Attaching a few of them below.

Normally I don't make an issue of aesthetics with these things, but as much as Apple displays get praised and competitors dissed for such things, I gotta ask...why that plastic-looking light navy colored back on the vertical part of the display stand?

Much of it looks like silvery bare metal, an aesthetic people have lauded Apple displays for, that industrial minimalist look, and LG appears to have produced something at least superficially resembling it (I don't know if the display body is plastic or metal) at first glance, but that blue plastic stand back is a visual contrast.

Wouldn't mean much to me since at home I don't look at a display's rear much, but I can see where it might annoy some.

I’ll be very surprised if there isn’t a choice of colors for the stand. I imagine that listing has the price right and the photos are from LG, but the rest of it doesn’t strike me as a spec list derived from the official LG specs.

I hope the LG does turn out to be gloss otherwise it's a no go, it looks like the best in terms of connectivity at the moment.

Alogic 6k is a no go as paying a premium for touch I don't need. Kuycon is not bright enough. Asus is matte, so no go.

Maybe the Geekon Hero will be the saviour.

As far as I know (I may have missed something), that conclusion is based on one unauthorized photograph taken in unknown lighting conditions. So it’s not “confirmed” but it appears to be likely.
It’s listed on a Swedish site, with a complete spec list that looks real (LG uses that yes-no format). Confirms it’s matte. Nothing about colors. I’ve updated the WikiPost with the new details. Price is around US $2000. Release date is 12 December.
