I knew I should have just gotten a Kin.

Just kidding, this phone rocks and I feel sorry for anyone dumb enough to downgrade to a 3GS this early. Yeah I can recreate the issue. No it doesn't really affect my ability to use it. The download/upload speeds are phenomenal and severely outclass the performance of the previous generations of iphones. When I'm on a call, I don't hold it in a way where I'm touching the bottom left corner so I don't drop calls. Basically this whole thing is a non issue to me and will be even more so in a few days when my bumper arrives.

Like I said, it doesn't impede my ability to access and send data MUCH MUCH faster than the 3G/3GS and that, for me, is the most important part about this phone. I'm a typical guy and I don't have long conversations on the phone. I haven't had a problem with dropping calls because I've been careful to hold it right. The call quality when you hold it right far outpaces performance of my old 3G in my house where signal can sometimes be spotty.

This phone is an upgrade in every single way imaginable to me, and I'm glad to have it. Maybe there will be a recall and I can get a brand new one in a month or two. That would be just fine for me. Hell, I might not even bother with a voluntary recall because this thing works so well.

There are now 2 iphone 3GSs in my house, 1 iphone 3G, and 1 iphone 4. My i4 whoops the **** out of the others in every way, even reception....

And I was wondering if you just might be yet another blindly allegiant Apple Fanboi. Clearly you've answered that. Thanks for clarifying!

I just did an apple chat with "Jenna" from the apple store and she said that the iPhone has 30 days to return not 14

My receipt from Apple shows a 14 day return policy. Sure seems to be a lot of discrepancies about 14 or 30 days. I bought mine at a retail store.

Why so many hostile Juntennies in here?

We're not hostile, we just pay $327 for a new phone and think it should function correctly without additional enhancements, that's all. I do realize my incredible gall in supposing that my iP-H-O-N-E might actually function as a P-H-O-N-E without a supplemental bumper case. What was I thinking.

Returned all 3 phones. Will wait until fix is in place then re-buy in a couple months.

Good for you! That's the spirit. The rebellion has begun!

I agree with you entirely. Ultimately the vote will come down to the wallet.

Consumers AND hard working Reporters will not let this HUGE GAFFE slide.

I tried to exchange mine at the Apple Store. No dice. I said, "But some of them appear to be working based on reading forums on the Internet."

Sadly, even the Genius's phone could replicate the problem. EVERY SINGLE iPhone demo unit at my local store replicates the problem.

HELLO APPLE. Thankfully I have 30 days... but it will go back if there's not a fix. That makes me sad because I'm a FANBOY from the mid-80s.

At my local store too, could replicate on any of the iPhone 4s. Apple employee knew about it and even told customers about it. He expected a software fix last Monday. I guess we know that didn't happen.
Seems like a hardware design problem. There likely won't be a fix anytime soon. Return is the best option. Get something that works and check back when Apple says they've fixed it.

I develop for iOS (iPhone & iPad) and Android, but I think the better phone OS is Android, especially considering the Google Voice integration. The larger problem is AT&T!

I just did a speed test on EDGE (which used to be very fast here) and the results? Anywhere from 5Kbps - 50Kbps, none of which are fast enough to stream audio, which is important to me, and too slow to load webpages on the go. So I just called AppleCare, and the rep told me that a bumper will help signal issues. My rebuttal? I shouldn't have to buy a case to fix a design failure. Plus, it's not a signal issue, but a speed issue.

I miss my EVO, I miss Android. I think this device is going back.

I didn't return my iPhone 4, but I'm canceling my Apple Store priority list reservation.

For me, the reason primarily comes down to money- I'm a student, and while I could afford an iPhone 4, I feel that the $200+ that I would be spending on the phone would be better off in my savings account. Thankfully, these alleged reception issues caused me to stop and re-evaluate the purchase, and I realized that the number 1 reason I want to upgrade is because I want a performance boost from my aging 3G.

Yes, the Retina Display is breathtaking and FaceTime is great, but at the end of the day all I want is to be able to navigate my inbox at a relatively fast pace while listening to Pandora at the same time. I wasn't too excited about the 3GS last summer, but the 3GS plus iOS4 is a different story. I'm excited for multi-tasking! I also love the durability of the 3GS and the rounded edges, I hated how the 4 felt in my hand when I tried it in store, and being a student I need a somewhat durable phone.

I can trade in my 3G at Radio Shack for $100, which will cover the cost of the 3GS, essentially giving me a free upgrade. It may not have all the bells and whistles, but I'm still excited to upgrade! :)

Sounds like you have a VERY GOOD plan. Apple may have sold almost 2-million of these defective phones, but the consumers will ultimately vote. We're EARLY in the story of the Apple iPhone 4. So far, it's not looking great for the home team. (I love APPLE)

Appic Fail By Crapple

Curious, given the abundance of complaints for various reasons, has anyone actually returned their iPhone 4? Not exchange for a replacement, but actually returned it for good given the massive problems they have suffered through.

Or are there folks just waiting for the "fix" first? I think actual returns are a good proxy for actual unhappiness with a product.

Oh, and post receipt or "it didn't happen".

Thanks.

Yes, and I went back to a new 32GB 3GS and couldn't be happier. All the antenna reception issues that you've heard of are true. WAY less comfortable to hold. Constantly afraid you're going to break it. Slides off of any remotely diagonal or angled surface due to new glass back. Push notification for email consistently fails. EMails that are marked as read are not marked as read. Sensor by the earpiece SUCKS - consistently comes back on when the phone is next to your face and you're engaged in a call so you're accidentally putting caller on hold, on speaker, pulling up contacts, beeping numbers in their ear, etc.. Steve Jobs' crappy and curt "Non-issue" reply. FaceTime will only work over WiFi. Pages take longer to render. Loses connection with Bluetooth devices you've used forever. Keyboard click sounds just suddenly stop working. Some people got volume buttons swapped. Some people report yellow discoloration on the screen. You need to invest in a case so you can actually use it as a phone - and for the first time ever, Apple has released its very own bumper case. How convenient!

GORGEOUS phone...remarkably ineffective. This does not "change everything all over again," so bub-bye.

ATT premier just told me they are going to charge 10% of the retail price! I tried to convince the service person that I am returning the phone because it is defective, but he wouldn't budge. Once I get my bill and see what statement Apple makes, I will either write a letter or talk to someone with a little bit more authority then level 1 support.

It's illegal in California to only list the restocking fee on the receipt and not make it explicit prior to purchase. I went through the ordering process again and clicked on the terms and conditions links and could not find anything about restocking fees in the order process steps.

I believe this is either a hardware or manufacturing process issue. We have seen the videos of 2 iphone4's sitting next to each other, one has the issue, one does not. I think apple/foxconn rushed in order to get this product out before the end of the quarter and before the Droid X.

I am going to give Apple some time and see if the problem gets resolved. If it does, I will order a new phone directly from Apple.

I was able to get it waived. You just need to be firm, talk with the manager, assert that you've been a longtime customer, but that you bought this expecting an upgrade and the obvious truth is that Apple will of course be able to resell this phone, that is unless you've damaged it in some way. They're just blowing smoke when they tell you that they "really can't do that, Apple won't let us", or whatever. BS. Of COURSE they can do that - that's what Apple pays them to do - sell their iPhones.

Guess not. Looks like the problems aren't as bad as some make them out to be. Or not severe enough to wait for potential fix.

Good stuff.

***laughing incredulously*** You do actually browse the web, yes? I suggest refreshing your results...

No i havn't because i'm not having any issues.

This whole iPhone 4 nonsense has been blown way out of proportion by a grouping of Internet blog trolls/fat basement nerds.

This is the best iPhone model yet.

I'll be returning mine. Great phone like others are saying, the network is worse than when I had my 3g. I will move back to Vz for a year and see what happens in the future for the phone. I just can't take the dropped calls anymore (which seem to be worse with the 4).

Premier store lets you return it to an actual AT&T store and you don't have to pay a restocking fee, yay!

That's odd, i have not had any of these issues you "speak" of.

And you are indeed certifiably drunk. I guess everyone out there is a liar and when they shelled out their $327.41 after tax for the phone, or even more in some cases, they were completely out of their minds to expect that it would perhaps double as a phone too. What were we thinking.

You are the kind of person who has no business posting on forums like this with baseless and unsympathetic name-calling. You REEK of Apple Fanboy...

I'm on the fence until they release OS 4.01 Then will see. I just hope its soon because my return window is about another 15 days. So far the reception has been terrible. I am left handed too. Places I had full bars and 3G with my 3GS are now either no bars and on E or no signal. And download speeds are horrible. If the OS 4.01 doesn't fix these issues its going back and I'll stick with my 3GS..

That's odd, i have not had any of these issues you "speak" of.

Then you should "read" about them on the "web" and "trust" that there are "lots" of "people" out there "that" really "are" having "issues" "with" "their" "new" "iPhone" "and" "that" "it's" "not" "all" "it's" "cracked" "up" "to" "be"...."

"***shakes head***"

Like CNET said, and through my own experience, some are definitely worse then others.

I had an iPhone 4 with yellow splotching and they replaced it, but I also noticed that the same iPhone 4 with the yellow splotching was much more susceptible to the death grip problem. My new one, has had no yellow spots, even after extensive use and I have held it each and every way possible, watched all the videos on the loss of service, held it exactly as the videos showed, with no problem.

SO, some units have poorer reception then others...what I would do....is go to another Apple Store in your area, they may be more convinced that this is a problem, and replace it on spot.

-Frank

Thanks Frank, I'm trying this tomorrow. A co-worker of mine also got the iP4 on launch day and we tried the "death grip" in a couple different spots and mine was noticeably worse than his. We both have Apple bumpers on our phones. At my house, I go from 5 bars to none and dropped calls when I hold my phone how I naturally hold it.

I returned mine yesterday. Wanted to wait longer but the drops were getting really frustrating while on work calls. There were maybe a dozen other people returning or exchanging also. Of the people I talked to, most were having signal problems, but one guy had a yellow spot that never went away. Tons of people came in asking if they had any in stock too.
