Same thing with the iPhone X having it's 2 rear cameras in vertical orientation. It is just to be different, not for any reasons linked with being better.

I'm sure they've got a reason for changing it, other than being different. The internals are bound to be different, meaning some things will obviously change.

Are the 7 models getting the Face ID hardware? Just a thought.
No. [if you are talking about iPhone "7S"] Why should iPhone 7S Get Face-ID? if it still retains Touch-ID!. According to Rumors It will retain Touch-ID and leaked iPhone 7S display assembly doesn't show any sign of Face-ID. It will be regular model with updated internals and wireless charging.
The iPhone 8 is the real game changer this year.

The only point I was making was that the vertical camera orientation might be to accommodate the Face ID hardware. You're reading too much into it. :)

I think people are throwing around the terms "game changer" and "revolutionary" a bit too easily this year. A better display and one form of biometric security replacing another doesn't exactly change the smartphone landscape.

The iPhone game changer?

The cutout will most definitely be there but it will be barely noticeable cause I'm pretty sure they'll have the status bar parts left and right of it with a black background, like in that Forbes article:
Screen-2c.jpg

No doubt you are exactly correct. It's the only logical answer.

all of you that do not like the design, and think it is "Horrible"--easy peasy--don't buy it.

Vote with your wallet, exactly. :)

But trying to drum up support for your opinions is apparently fun and exciting...and while we're talking about money, cheap.

I agree with the OP. Those damn camera lense and that flash are in the way. Apple would've been better to just place the camera lens under the screen so it will not interfere with the screen size. This problem has been keeping me up for countless night with NO sleep!!! Just like the OP I have no life !!!!
Yeah they should've done the impossible, you're right!!!!

Wait wait wait. You're telling me that you actually don't know why the camera module is in the vertical orientation in the iPhone X?

God... just god.

Let's explain it for you:

See inside the device are these magical things called parts. It turns out that when you place a bunch of these parts in a specific area inside the device, other parts have to be rearranged to fit (I know so stupid right?). Turns out that when you place 4 different sensors and a speaker on the top of a device that is significantly narrower than the iPhone 7 Plus, guess what no longer fits horizontally?? Ohhh you guessed it!!!! The rear camera module!!! Nice!

Okay now, Apple engineers were stuck for sooo so long trying and trying to figure out how they would fix this impossible problem they were faced with. And after 1.3 seconds they concluded at long last, they'd just turn the rear camera module into the vertical orientation so that it would fit inside the iPhone X. Applause was heard all over the Apple campus.

That's why it's vertical. It offers no difference in being vertical aside from the fact that vertically it can actually fit in the device.

Isn't the face ID going to use the front facing camera?

Also wouldn't the 7S plus retain the horizontal camera ?

I'm thinking there will be at least one additional infrared sensor in the front.

The 7S will probably retain its horizontal orientation because of the lack of Face ID hardware inside the phone. That's my thought, anyway.

I'm pretty sure that's not going to be the final design. It makes no sense, there's not enough Room for status data. Where would carrier names go, maxime when they are not fixed, each name has a different length. This is a design flaw not even a first grader would do, impossible not only for a multi billion dollar company, but for a company that is very picky about clean design.

In the extremely impossible case of being true, the status bar would most likely have a black background that blends with the bessel.

You make it sound like it should be blatantly obvious to everyone why it's vertical. Not everyone knows how the internals of electronics work.

Wow, classy.

What would you rather have, a big top bezel then lose a portion of the top of the screen for the status bar? Or, integrate the top bezel with the status bar so you don’t lose space at the top of the screen?

With gestures. Which has been supported for years already. Are you that hard wired for a button or a pseudo-button?

With gestures exactly how? I heard swiping up the screen. How are we scrolling then? How are we playing fruit ninja? The system was made to be swiped screen wide so you cannot introduce a global system function by that.

In the case swiping was implemented, do you really think it wouldn't be tyring to have to swipe every time you want to go "home" instead of pressing a button that by the way is within reach?

No. The iPhone 8 is the real game changer this year.

Game changer? It's going to have enhanced improvements and capabilities, but the "Game Changing" moniker is overly redundant. It will be a great iPhone by all means, but the iPhone was due for a major refresh as it was, so it's not entirely surprising to expect a lot of the changes that are coming. Face ID will be the biggest alteration, but let's reserve game changing once the user can test these functions first.

Yes Apple, how are we playing fruit ninja!?!?!

:D

Samsung support VR and they still use a horizontal camera set up.

Ok. I guess Apple have their own plans with VR/AR goggles? (Locking us into certain models that line up with the camera).

See my post on previous page - they can gain space by merging & removing less critical icons.

That HomePod leak from a few weeks ago had traces of a dynamic status bar system. The icons could very well show up depending on what you do or scroll around. Maybe we even get to pick what icons we want to have showing?

I mean I don‘t need stuff like carrier name (I got a flat that covers every possible country I go to), bluetooth (it‘s always on here... although I like the AirPods indicator), rotation lock (always on) and alarm icon (always on) to show. I can see why people want to have these showing though.

The cutout is also bigger than the height of the status bar we have now. Maybe the new phone has 2 rows? We‘ll find out next week I guess.
