It's actually quite shocking. You would think that with all their recent developments in technology that they'd be able to crank out something better than that., I mean with their A6 chip. But what do I know.

I'd love it if the actual iPhone 5 brought up the home screen as quick as Apple would make out that it does...

Nice catch indeed.
That's how it looks if you have an iPhone 5S.

Planned obsolescence, anyone? Apple may purposely set longer animation lengths on older phones and shorter animation lengths on newer phones. Animation delays and differences in delays are so obvious that this would be an obvious tactic to convince users of the need to upgrade to a newer, faster phone.

With each new phone release, Apple could slightly increase the length of the animation delays on the older phones. Users that want the shorter animation delays would have to buy the new phone.

Those tactics if true would make me walk from Apple.

Ok you're really reaching here...

Animation durations have nothing to do with performance. For example, in ios 4, the app closing animation takes exactly the same time in ancient 3G as well as on iPhone 4.

I'm pretty sure that this is cause by debuging the ios itself. It make sense cause it is beta for developers not for the public yet and apple collecting data for bugs in glitches etc..

In the final version it will be faster, alot faster i believe.

Absolutely - very underhand.

Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised. Look at the claims Apple made about Siri which, before they bought it was working fine, some would say with greater functionality even, on the older model iPhones.

Still, it's one thing to add a new feature (Siri) as an enticement to buy a new phone, but it's another thing entirely to deliberately hobble older phones. I just can't see Apple doing that.

Have they done it before?

Yes, with iPad 2. We all know its the exact same processor as the iPad mini yet they never included Siri as they did with the mini. Not exactly a deal breaker but it is a mild nod to planned obsolescence. Not that it's a big deal to me since I have an iPad 4 :)

But that's just not including a new feature, not actually crippling an existing one in some sense--two different things.

With radical redesign on iOS 7, i can't help but to expect a big radical new design on the next iPhone. Can't wait!

Maybe iPhone 6 next year, but very unlikely for iPhone 5S in few months.

Not having Siri on the iPad doesn't come even come close to making it obsolete. Plus it's a feature, so not surprising a new feature would be limited to newer devices to entice people to upgrade. I bought a 2013 Honda Civic which isn't equipt with satellite radio. The 2014 Civic is. There's no way for me to get satellite radio in my 2013 Civic. Is that planned obsolescence on the part of Honda?

The suggestion here is that Apple would purposely make iOS 7 run poorly on older iPhones to get people to upgrade. I think that's an absurd suggestion. And I'd love someone to provide evidence of Apple doing things like that in the past.

I can't imagine Apple would do something like that, not because they're too virtuous, but because it's not in their best interest. Like any other company, Apple wants high customer satisfaction with their products. They're not going to make their products deliberately less satisfying. If they did, people might just decide that the Apple experience isn't all that great, and upgrade to a different platform entirely.

If you compare the animation speeds of an iPhone 4 vs iPhone 5, they are virtually identical on iOS 6. The main difference is that it takes longer for the app itself to load so you see a black/white screen on the iPhone 4.

So no, Apple has never deliberately slowed animation speeds before.

Exactly. Same thing when people claim Apple deliberately constrains supply to create demand. Completly ridiculous.

This thread is idiotic seeing as this is a developers beta meant for developers to test their apps on, NOT a preview of what they plan to release. I'm pretty disappointed by some of the users here. I had alot of respect for a few of you. I sure as hell hope you come back here for your public flogging in the event that iOS 7 comes out operating as it should be...

lol reminds me of those iphone 4 ipad will doom Apple threads.

Of course not, why would anyone actually beta test a whole new release if an OS?! That would be silly.

Ok, I will admit I only read the first 3 pages of this thread, however, I have one response to say here:

Despite the (really pretty) animations being a tad slower than we'd like, at least at this point, I have to say that, with all of the changes they have made, my OVERALL feeling using iPhone 5 with iOS7 beta 3 is that it is more responsive and the things I need access to are right there, so functionally it is faster and easier. And, I have to say, I disagree about multitasking...the new way of dealing with multitasking is much, much faster (iOS 6 and below: press and hold and wait wait wait for the circle with the x to show and icons to vibrate? Uh, yeah, over that, now I can just double click and switch over or swipe away, very nice!)

Also: they could do 1 of 2 things: 1) speed it up by the time GM is ready? OR 2) You could interrupt the animation by clicking on an icon? Then the animation changes to open that app? (I'd like this).

How true... Love the interface of iOS 7 as it is and can't imagine going back.
Just hope that Apple will not change too much about it before final release.
