Ya, 2026 is a wee bit optimistic. I would wager 2027 and that would put it on its normal 7 year cycle.

PS4 2013-2020

PS5 2020-2027.
2026 is possible if MS stays in the console game and comes out with Series X2 in 2026 for a low enough price to move units (like what happened with the xbox 360/PS3 iirc). Assuming Sony doesn't want to lose market share like they did that generation.

But otherwise, yeah I'd expect the PS6 in 2027.

Right now they are the leader between they and Microsoft. Sony is full of confidence and it is apparent in their pricing strategy of the PS5 Pro and what they have removed from the console. Sony is calling the shots this gen and Microsoft will need to react. The other benefit for Sony waiting a year if Microsoft decides to release a year earlier, is that Sony gets to see Microsoft's specs, strategy and pricing. It then allows Sony to try and one up Microsoft's next-gen platform.

For those that hope or think Microsoft will leave the hardware business, my advice is. You don't want that happen because you will see very high console prices with minimal accessories included and higher priced games. If people think the PS5 Pro is overpriced, the starting base price might encourage even higher pricing if Microsoft is no longer in the game. As they say, competition is good for the consumer. It's bad when only one company is calling the shots.

I played some Uncharted 4 remaster last night. Switched around between Fidelity and Performance mode a few times. The difference in resolution was barely noticeable to me. The difference in framerate however was! The scrolling and panning of the camera are significantly smoother.

If the PS5 Pro can bring 60 fps to future games that are otherwise stuck in 30 fps, it may win me over.

PS5 Pro pricing is more reflective of the cost of gaming hardware than Sony's confidence. Even Nvidia GPUs are expensive. For the PS5 Pro, this includes a new GPU, chips for AI and for talent related costs for PSSR.

If we zoom out, Nintendo is the leader. Sony's confidence dwindling a little bit. This May they announced that live service games will release on Playstation and PC on day one. If PS5 hardware sales slow down below expectations, Sony likely has the plan B option of bringing single player titles to PC on day one. There is a cohort of PC players who will not buy a console but would buy a $50-80 Sony game on day 1 if fomo is strong. Sell copies to 10,000,000 PC gamers and that's $500-800m with a minimal marginal cost.

Nintendo has made it publicly clear numerous times that they do not compete with either Microsoft or Sony. The Switch is first and foremost a mobile device that can double as a hybrid but its main focus is a mobile device, whereas the PlayStation 5 and XBOX versions are not. I still believe that Sony has strong confidence in their market leadership. That confidence led them to several marketing and pricing mistakes with the PSVR2 and now they have followed that up with the PS5 Pro.

A less than confident Sony would not charge $200 more for a slightly better mid-cycle console and have the gamer pay for a disc drive add-on and vertical stand. You don't risk that strategy unless you think it will work.

The pricing of PSVR and Playstation Portable is mad. But that's typical Sony behaviour.

They shot themselves in the foot many times in the past with overpriced Vaio laptops and mp3 players that don't play mp3 files but instead only supports sony's proprietary format.

But this is a pattern that Sony seems to gravitate to. They did it with the Sony PSP charging $299, the same price as the PS2. Then they priced their UMD media at ridiculous levels which made Hollywood, walk away. The only reason the PSP lasted so long was due to piracy and it was only after game publishers leaned and threatened Sony that Sony pulled the plug on the PSP. It was a great handheld and I owned several PSP's and still have them laying about.

They also priced the original PS3 too high. Then they followed that up with an even better portable, the PS Vita. I also have a few. I loved that device but pricing it close to the PS3 Slim was a disaster and by that time Nintendo responded by lowering the price of the 3DS. That was a point where Nintendo was feeling the heat because Sony was back in the mobile/handheld space. The PS Vita just fizzled out which was a shame, lovely kit with a great OLED screen.

So Sony has a pattern for these mistakes and they tend to trip over themselves from their prior successes.

Yeah that history has made the PS Portal just an odd device for them to come out with.

I look forward to seeing how PS5 Pro will handle UE5 games. One thing that the console is missing, that I think PS6 will have, is frame generation. At least Sony decided to focus on one thing at a time and that is to nail upscaling.

Judging by the videos and reviews PSSR is only second to DLSS. It's a big achievement and means that Sony have beat AMD and Intel.

If you order a PS5 Pro, you will be pleased with the upgrade. YouTube compression doesn’t show off the improvements well. It reminds me of when I bought a gaming PC to supplement my XSX.

Performance mode on the consoles is PS4 level visuals, or in same cases even a bit below rendering at 1080p. Hellblade performance mode looks disgustingly murky and soft.

Switching on my gaming pc for the first time for CP2077 was europhoric as if I upgraded my eyes or TV. Everything was sharper, more alive and vivid compared with the same game on my XBX. It felt like I was playing next gen for real.

From what I can tell, the uplift for the PS5 Pro look similar. You basically get fidelity mode with 60fps. This is what the base PS5 and XBOX should have offered. If this was the case, I wouldn’t have bought a gaming PC.

the question is - does the inflated cost justify that increase in performance.......

If it plays open world and UE5 titles at 60fps with fidelity visuals then yes.

The price of a PS5 and PS5 Pro is similar to that of a 4060 and 4070.

It's not a bargain but cheaper than a 4070 PC....for now. Unless MS makes windows controller friendly from boot up to gameplay, the PS5 Pro will be worth considering.

You get it.

In its first 473 days of existence, free-to-play Monopoly Go generated $3b in revenue. This is without having to deal with self-entitled keyboard warriors like ourselves, the press and refund requests from gamers who expect too much.

Meanwhile titles like Concord, Red Fall and Startfield cost $300-400b to develop and flop hard. When was the last time you read about a studio celebrating the success of a AAA title with revenue figures?

Going forward I expect to see ads in:
-Dashboards
-When you pause
-Loading screens

😂🤣😂 did you seriously just claim Concord et el cost 300 to 400 US BILLION to develop??? 😂🤣 I never knew a game cost more then an entire Western nations wealth to develop.

2026-2027 is the year that I have seen floating around. I expect the PS5 in 2027-2028 with a possibility that the PS5 Pro will remain in production as lower priced console in parallel.

So the PS'6' will cost MORE then the PS5 Pro, so what 800? 900? At that point no one will buy it and Sony will be done. Even if they did lower the price you'll still be talking 550 at least for the PS5 Pro, and the masses are not going to rush out to buy a 600 to 700 console plus games.

Sorry I meant $300-400million.

When the PS6 launch Sony could drop the price of the PS5 Pro. The price premium over PS5 is front loading the cost of PSSR hardware and software R&D.

Nintendo has a two price tier approach with Switch and Switch lite.

We all laughed at the Series S but MS has been vindicated. It's generating sales and shows that some customers are price conscious. Going forward more games will use UE5. You don't need a $800-900 pc or console to play fifa, NBA, cod, minecraft or fortnite. They run well on the series s which reminds me of the cute ps1 slim.

A quick search on Ebay shows 17 (!) preordered 30th Anniversary PS5 Pro's offered for multiple thousands € each.

And people are bidding on them.

I hate scalpers so much.

Waste of money to buy from Scalpers. I would:

-Buy the 30th anniversary controller
-Buy 3rd party grey blades that are in matching colour and have a coloured ps5 logo

This is bad by Sony. They should hae prepared with more stock for the optical drive. No Pro console owners should have to a used optical drive at an inflated price to play games they already own on disc.

Yeah, looks like many gamers, at least PlayStation users, aren’t ready to go full digital yet. And I, as a digital only user (since the PS4 gen), I’m thankful to them. Because by the time users go massively digital and no games are edited in disc anymore, the great deals we see at the PSN Store on games that are one or two years old will cease, and will have to spend like 50€ for any relatively old game, not like today where you can get many triple A games such as Uncharted 4, FFXV, or DMC 5 for less than 10€, and other current gen gems for an affordable price of 20-30€

I mean it’s been a long time since I dived through the PSN store for the last time, but I assume they still have periodic deals ans sales, right?

The moment that the disc support ends, I think deals on the PSN Store will decrease in number and amount.

I think if I finally make the jump to a crispy, glossy 4K monitor (for both my upcoming M4 Mac mini and my future gaming console), the PS5 Pro is the better choice for me to fully enjoy the jump from 1080p to 4K. It is either that or wait for the PS6. But I think I’ll wait just a bit more until the first PS5 Pro revision, both to iron out some possible first batch problems, and to see if they manage to lower the total weight of the device. One of the reasons I didn’t purchase an original PS5 was its big size and obnoxious weight.

Sony should have just included an optical drive in the box for the pro. I think the majority of customers will be PS5 diehards that either have a:
-base PS5 with some disc games.
-PS4 with some disc games that they can play at higher frame rate or fidelity.

I love having a PC and a Series X for the reasons you mentioned. If an old game is cheaper of PC, I'll buy it on PC but if it's full price but I can buy a used disc copy for Xbox at £5-10 then I'll buy that.

I think over time, the difference between PS5 and PS5 Pro will widen. At launch the XSS and XSX offered comparable visuals in some titles. However, now there are titles that are so demanding that a cliff edge is hit where the XSS visuals or frame rate have to be signifigantly dialed down.

I'd assume they would have increased the price of the console by at least 50 bucks (like they do with the base unit) for including the disc drive.

All of my PS5 games are digital, and most of my PS4 games are as well. For the few PS4 games that are discs, I would have no problem waiting a few months till they build more drives.

But all that would be assuming I buy a PS5 Pro in the first place, which is currently not the plan. :D
