Apple today unveiled the Pro Display XDR, a 32-inch 6K monitor with a P3 wide color gamut and true 10-bit color support, 1,600 nits of peak brightness, a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and a super-wide, off-axis viewing angle.

Apple's press release:The display will be available in the fall, starting at $4,999, but that price doesn't include the stand. If you want the display to come on Apple's stand, as it is shown in official product images, that'll cost an extra $999. Unsurprisingly, the reaction to this news has been quite strong across social media.

The display will accompany Apple's all-new modular Mac Pro, which will also be available in the fall starting at $5,999.

TBH if I’m paying $5K for the monitor I don’t want some flimsy stand. And hinges have been known to have issues as well. Just saying.

Display is amazing. I don’t need it but I sure want it lol.

Can’t force them to buy an iPhone with it yet got to cover the R&D costs so, the stand sold separately for the price of an iPhone.

WOW, first thought was, is this 2006 AGAIN? I guess Apple was right, they can invent (well recycle) again.

Sorry I'm genuinely lost on this one. Is that adapter something else people would need in addition to the stand or is that for something else?

My question is, why is Apple doing this? You'd think they know this would result in bad press for basically no good reason. They're not going to sell many of these displays, so they're likely not going to make much profit selling these stands.

What's their angle here? Are they really this tone deaf?

Apple has been deaf since all the executives became million and billionaires. They are a fashion and services company that sells products to supplement their income.

I would say that ridiculous price would mean that there will be lots of much cheaper, after market stands available but the reality is the market for $5k monitors is not going to be very large.

Have you people never shopped for a counter-balanced display mount before? They're not cheap. We use Humanscale ones at work, and they're something like $400 each, and meh quality to be honest. The price of the Apple one is certainly high, but assuming it's actually very good and figuring in the Apple-tax, I don't actually think it's unreasonable.

Or, do people really plan on putting a $5000 display on a crappy plastic stand?

I knew somebody would be ok with it! Seriously? I’ve got every Apple gadget known to mankind, I’ve paid over £1.2k for a phone, more for an iPad Pro, said goodbye to the best part of £4K for a Macbook Pro and even coughed up £7k for an iMac Pro. But a chuffing grand for a stand?!

Best keynote for years and they went and did that? Even with my fan boy blinkers on, I can’t think of any circumstances where I’d want to pay for a stand at all (ok I might be talked into a few hundred if I was drunk) but that really is a joke! Is it encrusted with the tears of dragons or something?

Since this stand really is just a new version of the snowball iMac display mount, I suggest everyone get a 17" snowball off eBay, and mount the new display to it. Problem solved.

I predict they sell a ton of $200 mount adapters, then Monoprice sells out of normal adjustable arms.

Apple is losing their f***ing minds with this sh*t. Not that I would ever get one of those displays, but I feel for those that have to get either the $200 VESA mount or the $999 STAND that costs the same as their old Thunderbolt displays just to use the damn thing... obviously Apple is thinking the mount/stand won’t be much for those already dropping $12k on the Mac Pro setup... highway robbery

I doubt anyone commenting is in the market segment to buy this monitor.

This is about “optics.”

Sad part of this? Apple could read these hundreds and thousands of comments about how insane this price is but read one comment like his and feel justified. “See? This guy gets it!”

Maybe tim will be back on a talk show comparing financing it to ordering a cup of coffee again...

I have an easy fix then, sell a $6,000 display and include the stand. Don't split out the stand pricing and really kill the good press being generated.

Agreed. Apple really should have priced the monitor at $6000 and offered a -$1000 bto option of a stand delete. Same net result, way better optics.

Agreed completely. That was unforced error on Apple's part.

I think the idea is that many pros will already have a VESA mount (but they’ll still have to buy the VESA adapter at $200, sucks for them!) and then you won’t have to force an unused stand to get shoved into a closet somewhere till the end of time.

Hey Apple, if you wanted $6k for the monitor then you should've just priced it at $6k rather than charging $5k and insulting our intelligence by charging an additional $1k for the stand nearly everyone will need anyway.
It has VESA mount holes on the back. You don't need to use this stand for it -- you can use whatever stand you want.

All of you people acting surprised at this stand, where were you when Apple released the XR with LCD display in 2019 for up to $900 ?

You think this stand suddenly came out of nowhere?
