I thought I was the only one that noticed that. The presenter just kept talking over the crowd and rushed threw that part of the presentation.

I think they knew what folks reaction would be.
I will have to rewatch for that.

You think it would have a simple stand in the box. Then offer a pro stand with better cable management, tilt rotate features, perhaps some additional ports. They could have shown that the pro stand was well worth the price compared to the included stand.
That’s a brilliant idea they should have implemented.

Which is kind of lame, but my point stands. You don't have to buy the $1K stand.

You don't have to buy anything, so with that logic why not make it $1m

That would actually be less offensive, as you'd remove all doubt that it's fashion stunt pricing and not intended to be taken seriously

Thieves... that's what they've become. Dirty thieves.

Tim Cook only cares about money. He doesn't have the passion for the product like Steve Jobs did. Yes Steve obvious wanted to make a profit but his passion was first about making amazing products. I can't see Steve marketing a monitor stand for $999. It's like Tim is pushing people away from Apple products with his higher prices. Many people like me have to hold onto our devices a lot longer now cause we can't afford the new stuff. Unless we want to downgrade to Windows or Android devices. Even those are not so cheap anymore.

Oh please. This is an unabashedly high end display with optional high-end stand to go with it. Is it over the top? Very much so! Will a lot of people buy it? Probably not! Will some people want it? Apple is betting yes.

And guess what? The beauty of our capitalist society is that if you don't want this monitor stand, you are not forced to buy it, just as you're not forced to buy an overpriced Rolex or a set of really expensive copper cookware. For the record, I'm in the same boat as you and even if I wanted/needed that $5,000 monitor I would probably save my $1,000 for something else. But I don't begrudge its being made. It looks to be beautifully designed, but it's just not for me.

It sounds like you're just wishing that Apple had built a cheaper monitor stand. But they didn't. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If this is Tim’s plan to overcome the trade war with China, he’s gonna need some luck.

If you don't like the price, don't buy it. Unless Apple forces you to buy the stand, they aren't stealing anything.
Technically that wouldn't be stealing either, because most thieves don't give you anything in return for taking your money, last time I checked. ;)

Comparing this stand to a Rolex is incredibly ignorant.

A Rolex can retain most of its price for decades, and some even increase in price.

These stands will be worth nothing in some years, thrown on the scrap heap like Apple Watch Editions.

I don't care what Apple do any more, they lost me years ago. I'm mainly here to rubberneck the car crash as other people also realise what trash Apple is now peddling for premium prices.

Rolexes are not overpriced, either.
[doublepost=1559617602][/doublepost]It’s nice they allow you to view the computer and monitor in AR on Apple.com.

And 12k was actually priced beneath what a watch engineered to be that fancy cost at the time. And as Jony Ive predicted, the Apple Watch hit Switzerland very hard. None of the what they did with bands on Apple Watch was easy to do and they nailed it. Even top designers praised them on that.

I have no idea how this stand was engineered and don’t care because it not something I need. But apparently it does come with a stand in the box, so this is a “fancy” one if you want it I guess.

Perhaps, but you’re already spending a BOATLOAD on a computer and monitor that you will use for years, what’s another grand? It’s like buying a Mercedes. Your already $65,000 into it, what’s another 1k for heated seats and electric shades. But like I said earlier, it’s not like Apple will ever sell enough of these to roll around in the money Scrooge McDuck style like everyone here seems to think they will. This is a TINY market and honestly if you love their kit you should be happy they continue to make Mac Pros.

If they really wanted to rake in dough for pure “greed” they could really monetize their purchase of Beats by making the sexiest, blingiest over ear headphones the world has ever seen. Apple Watch style. Slap ‘em on the heads of every baller, celebrity, and rapper out there and watch the money roll in.

No, a ‘fancy’ watch from Switzerland costs from 2k up, Apple didn’t under price anything, Swiss watches at 12 grand have luxury materials and Jewell’s and hand made automatic movements of exquisite design, Apple had a lump of gold that wasn’t even pure gold because if extra minerals they added to it, and a mechanism mass produced in a Chinese sweat shop factory floor and was the exact same as they put in $300 dollar watches. It also didn’t hit the Swiss market hard, that’s just fan talk, because the last time I checked all the Swiss Watch manufactures are still there..

Oh and you shouldn’t believe what you read in here by posters, fun fact the Pro XDR monitor does NOT I say again does NOT include ANY stand in the box, that’s according to the Apple webpage itself, read the contents of the box...

Yeah so want a stand for your monitor, another grand please...

Rolex is actually operated on a non-profit basis, so the money they make is put back into research and staff.

Whereas there are no limits on how high Tim's personal bonuses can go.

Look, the price for the stand _is_ nutso, but it’s not a consumer display. This thing is aimed at movie production houses, the places that would happily consider spending $55,000 (fifty-five thousand dollars, not a typo) on something like this: https://www.tvtechnology.com/news/dolbys-new-42inch-video-reference-monitor-now-available

All that talk of editing three 8K ProRes RAW streams at once make it abundantly clear that by pro they mean “you are editing major Hollywood blockbusters,” not “you are editing videos of your son’s little league game.”

Apple’s mistake today was talking about _truly_ professional-grade hardware at a keynote watched by normal consumers expecting things they would and could buy.

Apple today unveiled the Pro Display XDR, a 32-inch 6K monitor with a P3 wide color gamut and true 10-bit color support, 1,600 nits of peak brightness, a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and a super-wide, off-axis viewing angle.

Apple's press release:The display will be available in the fall, starting at $4,999, but that price doesn't include the stand. If you want the display to come on Apple's stand, as it is shown in official product images, that'll cost an extra $999. Unsurprisingly, the reaction to this news has been quite strong across social media.

The display will accompany Apple's all-new modular Mac Pro, which will also be available in the fall starting at $5,999.

Guys its made of Valyrian steel!!!!! It can kill white walkers!!! It’s worth the 999. Especially if you are Arya Stark.

I edited and color graded a feature film I shot in 8K RAW (redcode, not ProRes) on an HP desktop I purchased for $1900 2 years ago.

Color was done on a $400 10bit monitor (that I calibrated).

I saw the movie in 3 separate movie theaters when it premiered at Tribeca Film Festival and it was always 100% identical to what I was seeing on my monitor.

Oh, and as a funny aside... my movie was shot in 8K, mastered in 4K, played in those theaters at 2K as more than 80% of theaters still project at that.

The new Mac Pro is a good machine for Pixar or ILM and pros of THAT size, but would it kill Apple to release ANYthing between the mini and this new Pro?

Marketing fail. They should have announced it at $5,999 and then said BUT you can order it without the stand for $4,999. People would scratch their heads but not laugh or gasp.

Damn, nice! Is the movie available digitally?!

It really wouldn’t kill them to fill in the middle. I was hoping for something in that middle tier myself - compiling software is a very different beast from super high end video production workflows, but given the frequency of recompiling during the dev stage, I’d want more than the current mini.

Can you begin to imagine what the price for the charging mat was going to be? No wonder they cancelled it.

Only $199 for the power cable!

It’s called “Something Else” and it’s an indie romance/horror movie with a practical FX monster. I’m co-director, cinematographer, co-editor, colorist.

Movie is currently being shopped to distributors so it could get picked up and released in a few months or it could be next year. Meantime, it’ll probably play a ton more film festivals until that happens.

Plus Apple's T2 chip bricks any monitor connected to an unauthorised stand or mount

VESA costs $200 extra

You don’t even have to spend that much for a VESA stand. I bought one for my 55” TV for $45 on Amazon, it even swivels.

Now, when Apple announces they’ve reduce the stand price to only $699, they’ll be everyone’s hero!
