Maybe they're waiting to release the new MBP's with the iPad, in an attempt to pick up additional iPad sales as part of a combo with the MBP? Like buy an iPad with a new MBP, get $100 off...just a theory. I know I have zero desire for an iPad...but when I'm checking out my brand new shiny 2K+ MBP, and there's a box to add a iPad for $349...I might be compelled to add it to the cart :)

Not saying their doomed, I'm stating two facts,
1. They look like fools for the hardware that they offer right now, especially at the price. That and the fact they are last in the market to get to i5, i7 CPU's.

2. They are losing money from this delay no question. Not all Mac users are die hards, many are on the fence, and this is pushing them onto the PC lawn.

You dont need an economics degree to figure that out.

+1

However, there's a fine line here and it all just depends on your perspective. Mac fanboys, sensible buyers, and the apathetic/uninformed consumers all have different reactions to the lack of a refresh. I just sat next to a girl in my COMM class who just bought a 17" uMBP and her knowledge of processors amounted to "the thing that makes it go vroom?" And well, thats most people and therefore the majority of Apple's customer base, right? She sure as hell didn't care about the refresh. Most people don't. I suppose the REAL question is.. what % of Apple's customers are watching for a refresh? 1-2%?

Dear Apple,

The MBP refresh wait has gone from annoying to absurd to downright embarrassing. Being last to market with something as no-brainer as processor updates does you no favors as a premium computer brand. Shouldn't premium products lead the way? Remember the days when you were the first ones on the market to feature a new cutting-edge processor? We do.

Please bring those days back.

Love,

Us

P.S. Oh, and while most of us will gladly pay a premium for beautifully-built-and-designed hardware (and integrated software), the least you can do is slip in the same size hard drives and RAM as your crummy, cheapo competitors that sell for half the price.

+1. Though I actually wouldn't mind if they sold the MBP's without any RAM or HD and past the saving to us...since they're lacking and oveerpriced as it is anyway.

Sucks big time for me...I have an ADC asset with 40% discount on a high end MacBook Pro and it expires 02/23/2010. Which means that I need to purchase a MacBook Pro by next tuesday. The worst part of all is that if I purchase it next tuesday or now and nothing is released, I can't return it because its automatically considered a CTO. I don't know whether to say I am disappointed or not but it truly sucks. I have a feeling Apple doesn't even have new MacBook Pros ready, the rumors are so vague and no images nor actual references to the actual improvements have been posted. I have a feeling implementing Arrandale and other features are affecting the functionality; either battery, heat, who knows? i just hope Apple doesn't abandon their professional market, which kind of defines who they are to satisfy mainstream buyers of silly trendy products like the iPad.

every intel CPU after the P4 has been cooler and more power efficient than the previous generation. if there is any hold up it's probably working on graphics drivers from ATI or Nvidia

Dear Apple,

Thank you for executing such a superior and profitable business plan. The MacRumors comments has gone from annoying to absurd to downright embarrassing. Being first to market isn't what it's cracked up to be (c.f., iPod, iPhone, iPad).

Remember the days when Michael Dell said that Jobs should dissolve the company? We do.

Please don't bring those days back. Keep doing what you're doing and increasing AAPL shareholder value.

Love,

AAPL shareholders laughing all the way to the bank

P.S., Oh, and please don't erode your margins by cramming your products with substandard components.

Yes, I find it quite hilarious that some get upset with others posting rumors about Macs on Macrumors.com. Maybe they should start a Macfacts.com website? That way their precious time is not wasted. No need to thank me, I'm just here to help folks.

Is Macfacts.com a rumor or a fact, argh I can't take this!

I’m in exactly the same spot. It’s miserable! You don’t want to spend your hard earned money on a product that will likely be updated within weeks (days?). If it makes you feel any better though I’ve probably got you beat on the stress level of everything—I need to purchase a laptop so I can still get work done while my wife and I will be in the hospital overseeing the recovery of our soon-to-be firstborn baby girl. We just learned she is going to need surgery directly after her birth and at least 2 weeks of recovery in the icu afterward. :(

You know it’s bad when I’ve started praying for Apple to release these because it’s one less thing I have to be worried about! :)

Congrats on the baby and I trust all will come out okay after surgery, but if I were in your position, and knew that my unborn baby had to go straight into surgery, Macbooks would be the furthest thing from my mind. Kinda unfair that you'd put both in some sort of parallel category. But that's just me. I hope both, the baby and the new MBP, arrive soon AND well.

Why can't a rep from Apple come on here and give us some good "UPDATED" news! All this speculation is getting overwhelming!
Getting excited, then I'm not...Getting excited, then I'm not....

When will it all end?....haha

the reps are on here. they're just having a good ol' time watching us squirm. :D

It would be nice if they ditched the low end core 2 duo processor and low end graphics chip, and essentially moved the current middle iMac down to the 1599 price slot from 1899 ( student pricing)

Wasn't the new iMac only introduced 4 months ago or so? So what could they really do at this stage to refresh it? Like you suggest, they can always get rid of the C2D model, but what about on the top end?

The one change that I would be willing to pay for, a full transition to SSD, is still at least another couple of years away. Even then, I'm not sure if we'll have affordable 2TB SSDs. But, the day will come. :)

not all APPL shareholders, speak for yourself...because I remember about 15 years ago Apple falling into similar business practices, quality control issues, combativeness with 3rd party vendors, late to market on current technology, and becoming high and mighty and downright fanatical that they could do no wrong....and they were a quarter or too from going exactly the was Dell was quoted as saying they should... Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

Thanks for the kind words! I should have clarified though. Make no mistake—I am in NO way comparing the two. I’m simply stating that my to-do list is about 2 miles long right now and if the sooner I can get things checked off the better! In the end it’s only a stupid computer, after all. Our little baby already makes this stuff seem trivial, but I guess if anything it’s nice to try not to worry about everything else for a little bit and just be a geek! You know? :D

My wishlist:

Quadcore
Integrated + Discrete Graphics with seamless switching (auto and user configurable)
256 GB (minimum) SSD (SATA II or III) standard
IPS screen
4GB RAM (minimum)
ExpressCard slot (for 3G/4G datacard and other accessories)
USB 3 (for general accessories)
FW3200

Your wishlist isn't far-fetched for the Sandy Bridge refresh...

Quadcore - likely going to happen w/ Sandy Bridge
Integrated + Discrete Graphics with seamless switching (auto and user configurable) - hopefully in the next refresh
256 GB (minimum) SSD (SATA II or III) standard - likely optional (once the fragmentation issue is worked out on the Mac side)
IPS screen - IPS has roughly 2x the power consumption (d/t roughtly 2x the transistor count), so unlikely
4GB RAM (minimum) - likely in the next refresh
ExpressCard slot (for 3G/4G datacard and other accessories) - sadly, gone d/t space issues
USB 3 (for general accessories) - hopefully in the next refresh
FW3200 - unlikely that FW is going over 800 - but hopefully LightPeak will be available by Sandy Bridge

June 28, 2010: iPhone 4 released. iPhone OS 4.0 released for the new iPhone 4. Lots of great features like VOIP, video conferencing with a new front-facing camera. Don't think about buying an old iPhone 3G before this date.

July 20, 2010: iPhone 4V released. Will work on the Verizon network. The losers who bought an iPhone 4 which worked on AT&T's network are screwed.

All credibility lost with these 2 points.

I hope you're not trolling: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/865627/

3 Wifi iPad models (16/32/64gb) in English + 3 Wifi iPad models (16/32/64gb) in French = six 601 class. Obviously no 3G yet. Just look at the list.

Here in Froggy land the only thing thats different is the Keyboard, So if its iPads they will be the same as the English ones as one model fits all except the Chinese it appears.

The French iPhone is the same as the English one, and them Canadians have dual lingo manuals.

And the tension mounts... I was originally saving up for a MBP, but then I fell in love with the 27 inch iMac. So, now I am going to get that and will get a MBP as a traveling computer later.

so sick of waiting for this MBP update

I am sooooo sick of waiting for this update. Constant checking of the MR website either or via iPhone Web app. I'm thinking now, I might as well skip this update and wait for the processor speed bump later in the year. This will eliminate all the bugs and then I will get a better bang for my pound...LOL.... By the time the update comes to fruition then I will not need MBP any more as the University and College year is basically over....and my need/want will no longer exist until OCTOBER that is...signing off now and will stop checking for updates via this site or any other for that matter.....

True there are the die hards, but I have used windows 7, and it is a great OS no question.

Its easy to use, pretty, and quick.

And when Molly Sue goes to Best Buy and goes oh i really want a mac, but its so expensive and this PC has an i5 thingy, well there you go.

For all those that are on the fence about mac PC, this isn't helping Apple one bit..

Yeah right, Molly Sue (assuming she's the usual average customer) is going to go into BB and say, "Oh the MBP's don't have an i5 processor?". The average customer, which represents the majority of the computing world doesn't give a rats behind about the CPU of the computer they are buying. Most of them don't even know what a CPU is or how it works.

So to all the people who are dropping these idol threats about getting pissed waiting for Apple and threatening to move on to PC, I say, do it now, why wait? :p

Which idols are they threatening?!? I hope not American Idol. Some of those people can sing pretty good! Sports idols, I could understand. I'm sure Tiger Woods has heard some threats from his wife.

I will sit here idle awaiting an answer.

... i just hope Apple doesn't abandon their professional market, which kind of defines who they are to satisfy mainstream buyers of silly trendy products like the iPad.

It may define who they are to you but the facts don't back that up.
http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/four_years_of_apple_unit_revenue_graphs_illustrate_growth/
By either dollars or units, the "silly trendy products" (I take that to mean the iPhone and iPod too) just obliterate the Mac sales.

The new MBP line will be here when they get here. These waiting threads are nothing but a bunch of people blowing smoke and threatening to go back to a PC which is s threat they will never carry out. They act like they've invested in absolutely no Mac software and they couldn't care one way or the other if they use OS X or Windows. I call BS on this one. If you are true Mac user you will have Mac software that invested in and some that's not on Windows. So to all the people who are dropping these idol threats about getting pissed waiting for Apple and threatening to move on to PC, I say, do it now, why wait? There are a few Core i models right now on the market. :p

Blowing smoke is exactly why we're here. I want a place where I can bitch and moan about the MBP update taking forever where my not-as-nerdy friends won't tell me to shut up. The PC switch threats are more whines than threats, a result of us loving Apple products so much that we want to kick Mr. Jobs in the balls for making us wait so long for new e-bling.

That being said, Apple reminds me of an hour-late hooker. Hurry it up there, sweetheart, or I'm just gonna spend this money on porn.

And by porn I mean a PC

Yes, I am speaking for myself and a large portion of the AAPL shareholders who are laughing all the way to the bank, not the ones who are griping about a time when Apple was operating under a different management team and CEO.

I remember those times you do and even times farther back. There is no indication that Apple is ignoring history.

Dear AAPL shareholder,

Please keep laughing while we are too busy buying modern laptops from HP, DELL etc.

Not saying their doomed, I'm stating two facts,
1. They look like fools for the hardware that they offer right now,

In front of the consumers that have been handing them record quarters in a recession, or in front of consumers who are already putting Apple on track for record sales this quarter?

https://www.macrumors.com/2010/02/16/npd-strong-mac-and-ipod-sales-in-march-quarter-so-far/

Or do they only look like fools on Mac forums, which is about as meaningful as a pair of thermal underwear in Death Valley at high noon.

2. They are losing money from this delay no question. Not all Mac users are die hards, many are on the fence, and this is pushing them onto the PC lawn. Microsoft made the biggest blunder they could with Vista, and now that they are past that, they are raging back with 7. Best sales out of the gate of any operating system ever. Major consensus is that it's great. People are getting happy with Microsoft again. Vista was the biggest blessing Apple had in the last 5 years. And they used it well, but now 7 is here, and people like it. = Problems for Apple.

They're losing money even though consumers are buying at an excellent rate (according to the latest NPD numbers)? Better call Tim Cook and tell him the bad news! LOL

Its already been shown that Windows 7 has had no effect on Mac sales. The only problem for Apple is figuring out how to spend all that extra cash on hand. Apple has the Premium end locked, with MS locked out of it.

As for Winblows sales, everything looks impressive after Vista.

It's hundreds of millions of PC users waiting for the Vista nightmare to be over. What did you expect? Poor sales of Windows 7?? What are the alternatives offered by MS? XP and Vista. One is an 8+ year old dog of an OS, the other is a massive flop. That's hundreds of millions of PC users dying for an upgrade after years of getting the shaft. And Apple's Premium end of the market has natural barriers to entry, starting with the $1000 minimum fee. Apple doesn't compete in the market segments occupied mostly by MS. Of course, Apple is now transitioning away from the traditional desktop computer + desktop OS paradigm.

PC users outnumber all others, and always have, whether MS released a good OS or a lousy one - PCs are cheap and now more disposable than ever (netbooks.) The bottom of the retail pyramid is always the widest. The biggest computer-using segment uses PCs. Now throw in an OS that fixes Vista and by sheer force of numbers alone (volume) you'll have a great quarter.

There's no miracle here. Just the massive number of PC users who suffered for years, now jumping at the chance to upgrade. It's nothing new, miraculous or groundbreaking. BUT . . . MS *did* release a Windows that lives up to their expectations, and they deserve all the credit in the world for that. It's a shame that it took this long, though. Right now, Windows is really all MS has going for it in the consumer market. And I think it will be enough to help MS ride out the difficulties they're experiencing in their other consumer-oriented ventures. It should allow them some breathing room to develop their mobile segment and give investors a good reason to maintain their confidence.

It makes no difference whether any one version of Windows succeeds or fails. PC users, by virtue of the low cost of entry into the PC market alone, will always outnumber users of all other platforms. Windows will always sell well, in whatever form, because it can run on the cheapest hardware - and this is what you find the most of. But now, we're seeing highly concentrated sales of a particular version (good news) because everyone was waiting to upgrade and end the XP/Vista pain, which lasted far, far too long.

I just want to know what is happening with the MAC PRO TOWER?

Last updated nearly a YEAR ago!! Well overdue.

Average update 231 days.

I want one.
