What do you think about the way apple handles ios updates for older devices?

the amount of pictures on your phone absolutely should not matter. They can certainly code around that. Why should my device be crippled if it's full? I bought a 16g phone and should be able to use 16g without performance issues.

If I bought a 64g phone and had a full 16g occupied, should that impact the performance? If the internal hardware is the same except for storage, it shouldn't matter one way or the other.

iOS needs free space to handle system and app caches. These caches will increase or decrease in size, depending on usage. EVERY OS will slow down if you insist on running the device at or near its storage capacity. No amount of coding or wishful thinking or ranting or polling about criminal activity will change that.

The only big problem I have with iOS 8 was Apple's decision to include the A5-chip devices in the update. Sure, I appreciate that the company was still supporting my iPad 2 and iPhone 4s. But, with the wisdom of hindsight, it's pretty clear iOS 8 shouldn't be on those devices. I still trusted Apple at the time and upgraded after the first patch. I won't make that mistake again.

I'm not sayin you're wrong. However, do you really think a customer who buys a 16gb phone should not expect to be able to use 16 gb? I don't know about you, but when I buy Apple devices, it does not warn me that using up all of the storage will slow down the machine. Furthermore, if you buy a 16 GB phone, not all of that is available because of the iOS.

I don't think it's unreasonable for a company that makes devices like this to include some internal "hidden" storage that is set aside completely for the operating system and for the reasons that you mentioned above. If you buy a 16 GB phone, you should have 16 GB of storage available without compromising system performance.

It doesn't matter what they expect, or what you or anyone else thinks a device "should" do. Any modern computing device will not perform optimally if its primary storage space reaches capacity.

If you're trying to create an issue out of this, take it up with the industry as a whole. Not a single company reports the storage capacity of their devices with an OS already installed.

I disagree. Who's to say that the millions are happy about it, some might not realise how bad it is (there area lot of stupid people in the world), and then other think technology is beyond them and not want to look stupid, then others are too lazy to complain.

I've heard lots of friends that complain about the iPhone or iPad but would never bother taking it further and just hope a new update will fix it.

Millions of people haven't joined MacRumors to inform us of their opinions. Of those that have, a fair number are disappointed.

And a fair number are happy with it also.

I haven't heard many drastic complaints from friends and associates. Biggest ones are the portrait/landscape and the copy paste. Like others I hope the next update fixes these issues.

Hopefully me joining MacRumors to inform everyone might open the flood gates . . .

Welcome aboard.

And none of that relates in any way to having a downgrade path for those that do end up having upgrade issues. So...yeah...

Steve Jobs and Scott Forestall wouldn't have allowed such crap iOS to be released in the 1st place...

(Ps: Scott Forstall did a wonderful job for Apple.. Maps was under him, not by him and after ios7 and 8, Maps is still super crappy... now who should we point our blaming finger to?

The initial release of IOS 6 was as bad as the rest of them, if you can say they were "bad".

Was it really though? Was it just some complaints early on and that's it vs. many many more that continued for a long time when it came to iOS 7 or 8?

i Remember my battey life complaints either ios6 and that continued for a long time. IOS 7 I personally didn't have many issues with, but there were security issues in the beginning. IOS 8 I had no complaints about in the begging, but there was that SIRI hack bypass.

With hundreds of millions of Idevices, there will always be Internet chatter regarding issues.

Sure there are always some complaints. But again I don't recall there being as much or for as long when it came to iOS 6 compared to iOS 7 or 8.

Can someone compile all the bugs reported and sent to Tim Cook? Ask him what happened to the "Apple user experience"... I thought apple is all about that...

Aka - your problems are meaningless, and even if your devise is near useless, you should be thankful that apple allows us to purchases their products - regardless of their actual usefulness and usability.

Did I intepret your statement correctly? Because there are very few other ways to interpret it.

I wish Apple would not limit new iOS's to new devices only - or the carriers would somehow delay/ prevent upgrades. I would rather not be at the mercy of the incompetents calling themselves as Apple's iOS engineers with the way they "optimize" older devices.

The other way to interpret that comment is the number of people with problems is in the minority to the number that upgraded with no issue is what is being said.

As to the comment about being "thankful that apple allows us to purchase their products", make an appointment with a genius if you have a "near useless" device. Apple support is great. One of the reasons I like Apple products.

Except for when the device in question is an older one(2+ years old), and Apple states "Your device is A-OK to be upgraded to the latest iOS". But the second you do, the battery drops nearly in 1/2, and/or the device runs like molasses in January.

You get TONS of support then, right? You come here, and get ridiculed and told to do all the same things you've already tried. You go to the genius bar and are told that you can't be helped, and to look at the support forums. etc...

Then try the usual suggestions, restore as new etc.

I guess you missed the part where I already stated - "You come here, and get ridiculed and told to do all the same things you've already tried."

My 4S battery lost 1/3-1/2 of it's usefulness going from iOS6->iOS7. I did EVERYTHING!!! Turned everything off, restored from backup. Wiped the entire thing clean and start from scratch, etc... None of it did any good. Coming here stating as such, and asking for help was, as a I said, met with ridicule and being told to do exactly what I has already tried(you even just did it). Then it was accusations of being a Samsung troll, etc...

For some people, iOS upgrades screw up their devices, no matter what.

My 5S gets INSANE battery life, and will stay on 7.1.2 for as long as I am using it.

I'm sorry for you that you are in the minority of users having issues. Yes I did miss that amongst the sea of posts.

So ok we have deduced that the amount of people who have upgraded older devices and have problems are in the minority, so what is the problem with apple allowing, this minority downgrading to an operating system that allowed their device to run properly again, maybe a built in chip allowing the device to be reset to the iOS it shipped with. Then almost everyone would be happy. I certainly would be if I could have all our iOS evinces back to their original speed, but out of six iPads and two iPhones only two of these devices work without issues.
