Well I went from a iphone 3gs to a EVO 4G for 4 months and came back to the iphone 4. I was able to get out of my contract free due to super slow data speeds with sprint to almost non-existent. I have been completely happy with the iphone 4. Great battery life, the apps are just better and no lag from the phone. Call quality, yes I get drop calls again, which I didn't have with Sprint. But I will deal with it for now.

Android has a ways to go to polish their O/S, but they have come a long way.

^ Just curious.

Being "bored" with a phone's OS intrigues me. Is one of your requirements that a phone offer a lot of tweaks or gizmo's and its hacking/tweaking the phone that makes it "not boring?"

I've seen that comment before.....genuinely curious as to the response. I guess I don't view a phone as a pocketable 'tweaking platform,' but others may.

Well I just don't like being limited by what Apple wants. I have a ton of tweaks installed on my 4 from Cydia that make the phone easier and better to use IMO. I'm hoping that with the hire of the webos notification designer Apple may have an update coming for notifications with iOS 5. I like the live wallpapers, widgets, and other tweaks that Android offers. I like being able to get apps from anywhere and not just the app store. Now this does lead to potential problems if you install a bad app but if you're careful then you should be ok. I do think the iPhone apps are better which is why if I do change to Android I'm going to keep my 4. I've still stuck with the iPhone because AT&T hasn't had a decent Android phone other than the Captivate which has a terrible battery life. Most people I know have an iPhone and none of them are jailbroken. Some people are fine with that but I like tweaking and always changing my phone. You can change themes but that just changes the look and not the function of the phone. I'm going to wait and see what Apple has in store for iOS 5 and the iPhone 5 before I make a decision.

I saw be careful of those live wallpapers, widgets, and other tweaks that you like. They get pretty boring and not worth the things you lose from iOS. OF course that is just my humble opinion of what happened to me when I switched.

I've had an Android phone and I would still have it if it had a better battery. That was the only thing I didn't like about it. To each is own and of course here iOS is king. I like both and both OS's have benefits and drawbacks. Neither is completely perfect it just depends on what is most important to the individual person.

I can respect wanting to personalize your phone to the Nth degree. Its your phone, you should have that right. If you believe the hacks forum posters, this is the primary reason for Jailbreaking their iPhones. I think the primary reason for the silent majority of Jailbreakers is theft of service/apps but they aren't going to be posting that here obviously.

I guess I don't look at a phones' personalization features to be a deal maker/killer one way or the other. Beyond ringtones and background wallpaper, I'm just not that interested in such features that don't add to the usefulness of the phone. Others clearly do as indicated by your post.

Thanks for clearing up the "boring" comment....I've always wondered about that when I would read it here on the forums.

Each person is different. I don't expect everyone to think like me which is fine. As for the piracy aspect I'm sure a ton of people do jailbreak for that reason. For awhile I did pirate apps. About a year ago I stopped and started buying the apps or using a friends account to download it if they've bought it. Now every AppStore or Cydia app on my phone is purchased. I think a lot of people who pirate an app never would have bought it anyway if they couldn't get it for free. Devs do lose money but I think its overblown because they say that every pirated app is lost revenue which isn't true.

The whole concept of personalization options native to the Android OS is somewhat funny as my wife raged at me one night that she could NOT turn off that stupid "DROID" alert no matter how many times she went into settings and chose a different tone. You likely know this but she didn't (nor did I at first) that almost every Android app has its own 'alert' settings and these can override global settings. So I had to go into each of her major apps (email, SMS, voice mail) and set the unique tones she wanted to differentiate alerts accordingly.

In that case, massive personalization is a good thing for users like you, and a bad thing for users like her....she struggled for weeks with that before she brought the phone to me. For a novice smartphone user....too much personalization can actually be a bad thing.

Had to laugh a bit about this line.....

If I were you I would stick with android and get a diff android phone. I came from a nexus1 to the iphone4 and what I really miss about android are the widgets, google search and also that you don't need to root the phone to customize to your liking. You could just download an app and it'll completely change your whole homescreen. Unlike the iphone you'll need to jailbreak it.

But if you just want a better battery performance then go with the iphone.

I have to say, the iPhone was nice but man, it sure looked really small since ive had my Vibrant for 5 months now. The screen on the iP4 was just real small and it looked good but i didnt see the big deal some are making it out to be. Isnt any better than my screen.

My phone lives in my pocket and takes vacations to my hand. Small please.

Not true. My Verizon Fascinate came STOCK with Microsoft Bing as the search engine and no way to change that without rooting the phone. Since Android phones can all be 'skinned' with whatever UI the handset manufacturer desires, they are ALL doing it and in some cases taking an open OS and closing it down to force a more iOS experience on their users.

Ironically, however, I think that this kind of 'curated' approach, although misguided in the example I used above, is actually going to have to happen to get the Android platform to meet its potential. Right now its got all the features you'd ever possibly need but really screwed up implementation models necessary to exploit this potential.

Good article on this over the weekend here:

I'm assuming you laughed because think I'm lying which is fine but if I was going to lie I would have simply said that I've never pirated apps before.

I'm laughing because installing the app with your friend's account is still pirating....

You can change the search engine. DL the google voice search from android market. Set as default. Done.

So everyone here with an iPhone 4, that actually use it during the workday, to make calls, e-mails, texts, etc... does it truly last a good portion of the day before dying out ? Even with Navigation too ?

Thanks

I have an iPhone 4. Had a 3G before.

I'm a heavy user (4-7GB a month) and am constantly on my phone, or using it to WiFi tether.

I charge my phone when I go to bed and take it off charge when I get up. I've only dropped below 20% 2 or 3 times since I got the phone in July.

Occasionally, if I'm streaming netflix or tethering, I'll plug it into the car charger when I drive to lunch and back, but that's only about 10 minutes charge time.

I find that battery life is excellent. It also helps that this is the fastest charging phone I've ever had (it'll go from 60% to 100% in less than an hour plugged in).

Of course, your mileage may vary, but I'm extremely happy with battery life.

I almost switched to the EVO (I had one for less than a week). Sprint's coverage was not great in my city, and their network was noticeably slower than AT&T. The phone was awesome, but I ran the battery down in about 2 hours the first day I had it.

I've been jailbreaking since iOS 2.0 on a 3G.
I still can't understand all this talk about pirating and getting stuff for free?

I use tweaks like having a text pop up on top of what I'm doing so I can read it and reply or close it and never stop what I'm doing.
I like not having a lockscreen. Just hit the home button and the phone is on, ready to use.
I like having folders inside of folders. etc...

Its about customization and personalization.

I still don't know how to get reliable pirate apps (Installous sucks, from what I'm told)

Data speeds slow, under 50kb downloads all the time, and explained to them that my work requires me to get emails, etc and I can't even use my phone to browse the web. It takes so long that I give up. Basically on the contract it says if they can't provide the service they can't hold you to the contract either. So they let me out. I was very polite with them as that normally gets you a good deed. :)

Over the phone with Customer Service.

Picked up the Nexus-S last week, and not looking back :) Battery life is million times better than the EVO, almost on par with my Brother's iPhone4. And the Super AMOLED screen is drool worthy, need to wear a bib around this awesome phone. 2.3 Gingerbread is a nicer and more polished update to the Android OS, can see it is maturing finally, and getting better with each release.

I am open to an iPhone 5 this summer, but they need to do a few things to win me over, again. Make the i5 with a slightly larger screen at 4". Add widgets to the iOS. Add a solid notification system. Do those three things and I will jump back onto Apple.

Right now this Nexus-S is so fast and smooth, amazing phone. I love my "beautiful" clock/weather widget at the top of home screen, and my star field live wallpaper, phone looks very sci/fi but still business like mature at same time.

Sure the plastic casing might look cheap, but it feels light and solid, but no it's not the bad ass looking iPhone 4. But to me only the iPhone 4 looks great, the 3G + 3GS looked lame and too rounded plastic.

I'm glad you're enjoying your phone and finally made a decision. Cheers! :)

I might be back to the next iPhone, if Apple makes the much needed changes.
I expect iOS 5 to be about major software improvements, so I could see them adding widgets and building an improved notification system. As per a larger screen, I don't see it as a viable option, as it would require developers to re-scale their apps (some of which still don't support iPad or the Retina Display), but with Apple you never know. Never say never. ;)
