During the keynote, they showed a game when they were talking about 120 Hz. I forget the name of the game. But they said that that game was coming later. So I'm quite sure that third-party apps are, or will be allowed to in the near future, use 120 Hz refresh rate.
Yes that is what I recall too. Games could also unlock more capabilities than a reader app too. I am sure Apple doesn't want every app to run at 120Hz and get complaints about battery life, but games are known the use a lot of performance and take up a lot of battery.

I thought it switched to 120Hz automatically depending on what's happening on screen? If that's the case, why would developers have to do anything other than make something happen on screen?

That was my understanding as well. As the rate of pixel change increases so does fps.

While this is funny, am I the only one that never uses the contacts app? It’s not even installed on my device and hasn’t been for years. My 6S kept uninstalling it so I just left it off.
I never even knew you could delete it. How do you add contacts if you don't have a contacts app?

It does....which is why a developer with a game that will be released later this fall was discussing the game running at 120fps. However, people are using the vsync checker but Apple themselves did the development. It would not surprise me if they locked down the browser to 60fps max unless scrolling.

This is right on the money. Apple is using their OS monopoly to unfairly promote their own apps. Tim Cook only cares about making money and trapping customers in the Apple ecosystem. And anyone who suggests that other app companies should just make their own OS is so out of touch as to be irrelevant to the conversation.
😂 their own free apps like Garage Band, iMovie, Clips, Pages, Contacts, Messages, Watch, Weather and Safari?

You’re saying that Apple is intent on using their “OS monopoly” to promote their own FREE 1st party apps (which you are required to use an iPhone to access) to make money, so they hamstring 3rd party apps on said iPhone to do so? That’s the theory you’re running with?

How does that help them financially when users already own the device?

p.s. look up market share between android and iOS and rethink your use of “OS monopoly”

But wouldn't that violate the expected behavior?

It will be updated to allow it. Scrolling still works to 120hz just the animations
Seems like there’s always some minor issue like this that exists when a new iPhone is released with a new hardware feature, but gets patched in a software update a month later. Apple’s software QC could be a bit better but it’s not the end of the world.

This has GOT to be a bug. There’s no way they would limit it while letting the iPads run free. They must have simply forgot to add the 120fps options for those APIs, or launched the OS before it was fully ready.

It DOESN'T make ANY sense for a battery "preservation". With the iPhone 13 the batteries are even better. I mean, they delayed this feature because of this, it just doesn't make sense to have only on Apple apps. Specially the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

FYI, if you request a mail-in return, they give you another 14 days to mail it off. So we can use the 13 pro until 14 days in, request a return, have 14 more days after that, and hopefully have the Pixel 6 in-hand by then, not having to go without a phone for any time.

I say this as a former Apple employee (2008-14) and someone who has tens of thousands of dollars in Apple purchases in the last 5 years.

Rubbish.

Sheesh. People put apple on such a pedestal.
Because it’s apple, a trillion dollar worth company. Not to say they won’t make mistakes, but holding back key features they brag about doesn’t make any sense at all.

Plus, those pro max costs upwards of $1600, not cheap. You’d not expect a million dollar yacht can’t be used on day 1 and no immediate fix will be provided right?

If you'd rather, we can compare to Samsung and a dozen other mobile phone makers who have high refresh rate phones for years. And Apple can't get it right? Is that a better comparison for you?
Those phones you have to choose high refresh rate or high resolution Or horrible battery life.

You don't have friend, family? Or you're using 3rd party one?

🤣 Over-dramatic much?

This is definitely a bug where certain animations are being incorrectly locked to 60FPS, especially since not all animations in Apple's own apps are going above 60.

You might not even see above 90Hz ever. Hopefully it's an OS bug.

If it's anything like on the iPad Pro M1 browsing is capped at 60Hz. Use this to test.

https://vsynctester.com/

The YouTube video doesn't understand seamless VRR displays, nor does that website accurately test them (scrolling quickly should show an increase up to 120 Hz, but it seems some content in Safari is also limited to 60 FPS). Most Android phones simply run at 120Hz all the time. The latest Galaxy/Note does dynamically change refresh rate, but not on a frame-basis (delayed) and to only certain intermediate refresh rates (low granularity). I suspect something else is also going on here: slow animations don't require as many frames to appear smooth as fast ones do, so a power-saving optimization for the GPU would be to limit the frame rate in those cases (therefore also lowering the refresh rate to match).

it had absolutely better be a bug, because this was EXACTLY the kind of thing i was worried about when they were gushing about their “adaptive display.”

i dont want an ”adaptive” display, i want a toggle. if i dont want the display refreshing below 120hz, then it should not do so. i set my PC to enable output at my display’s native refresh rate, 120hz, and windows KEEPS it that way.

swear to god, i was in an att store the other day looking at a zfold 3, and i absolutely loved how much screen real estate there is to use when the device is unfolded. a display that much like its external, folded display, runs at 120hz.

there’s a 14 day return period on iphones and if this is something apple doesnt budge on, f**k ‘em. i’m moving at least my iphone out of the ecosystem. i’ve rolled my eyes and just “accepted” the rest of their idiotic behavior when it comes to software limitations, but it’s time to draw a line.

While seamless VRR is pivotal for mobile devices as an energy saving measure, it's also a higher quality way to display content. When the frame timings exactly match (or are some integer multiple) of the display's refresh rate, you reduce motion judder and eliminate screen tearing.
